Great review mate and very much aligned with my thinking.

"you blew up my body...but you blew my mind" then comes one of the best guitar solos of all time! seeing footage of them playing the song live was illuminating to me because while Manzanera is playing the solo, Eno is manipulating tape LIVE! amazing record and it's definitely my favorite too.

Great review ! I always preferred the early albums but thought Gary Tibbs was a great addition to the band.Cannot fault your ranking but have a soft spot for Manifesto.

Thanks for sharing. I had the pleasure of seeing them life in '83 & '01. Have my tickets for Toronto later this year. I've always liked Country Life.

I’d have Avalon higher myself, possibly even number one, beautiful album, but each to their own

I think Avalon is a great album, as I said, I don't think they ever made a 'bad' record..

I love all their albums, especially the first 4. The live album “Viva!” is outstanding.

Stranded, For your Pleasure, Roxy Music, Country Life, Avalon, Siren, Flesh and Blood then Manifesto. Each one has something very worthwhile.

As far as Eno stating that Stranded was his favorite, I think more accurately his words were, "My favorite Roxy album was the first one without me on it". Which can be taken more than one way.

I remember reading a review around the time of the first album which I regard as one of the greatest debut albums ever . It said that imagine that aliens ,light years away had picked up faint sounds of a fifties rock n roll station with lots of interference...then created a band ..that was this first album... Good list...I agree with most..

The easiest ranking I can imagine (chronological) for one of my favourite bands. They were far more progressive than any band normally labelled as such and shaped almost any music that came out after them - their impact cannot be overestimated. I am a Roxy Music fan since their first two singles in 1972 that were not on the first album and I enjoyed all of their releases. There is no bad one, even the polished "commercial" late albums stand high above anything else released in that genre. The band was always unique and if I rank the albums in the order of their appearance that does not really imply a steep downward slope. If you take 8 steps down from that sensational first album you are still more than eight miles high... Apart from Eno, who is of course a genius in a class of his own, there are also many good albums from Ferry and especially from Phil Manzanera (Diamond Head, the 801 albums, etc).

That's very interesting Roxanne....am keen to know what you make of my ranking then! Glad I've covered one of your favourites

@@rockrecordsreviewed1880 We are not too far apart...The first two albums are 5 star category for me, I just prefer the debut because it was the first one I knew and it was so different for the time (I never associated them with the glam thing, that was just facade and art rocker's gimmick). There is no weak minute on the debut while Bogus Man on the second one is a bit long. It is important that Roxy Music always was a band and never Ferry alone - just compare his solo stuff. Phil Manzanera is pretty underrated because he is not a virtuoso but he creates soundscapes like few others - I can only recommend his solo trilogy Vozero/6 pm/50 Minutes Later or his first three records with 801. Most important for me is that Roxy Music are still unique and great to listen to after all these years. Despite their enormous influence there is really nobody to beat the original.

@@roxannewalsh Great recommendations on the PM solo albums....will check them out, thanks!

@@rockrecordsreviewed1880 If you know none of them, I suggest 1975's Diamond Head for a start. Robert Wyatt, Eno, John Wetton, Eddie Jobson are there just to name a few. After that, you will notice his influence on many Roxy Music tunes more clearly.

If I could only take one of his albums to heaven, it would be Avalon, the whole album is excellent from start to finish.
