Roxy Music Vinyl Box Set-First Look

I was involved in the reproduction of the sleeves and labels. They couldn't use the original labels for the first 5 albums as they were generic Island labels and this box was issued by Universal. The original labels for the last 3 albums had bespoke labels using elements of the sleeve artwork/typography. This theme was then used to make bespoke labels for each of the first 5 albums connecting the label to the sleeve artwork and not just use a generic Universal label. The artwork was re-layered digitally by using the original photos where possible and re-typing the text with the same font etc to make the sleeves as close to being fresh as possible

Funny isn't it, the resurgence of vinyl itself, but also the resurgence of bands that were around during 'the golden age of the LP'... This speaks much not only of the poor of current mainstream music but also the state of music replay..Unfortunately convenience has replaced quality..Most people are simply unaware of the replay quality available.. Sadly, CD is going the way vinyl did in the 80's..Sure, a lot of CD's sound crap (mostly due to the mastering), but most people have heard neither audiophile quality digital or analog sources...A good digital or vinyl audiophile level source is mind blowing...

I went to high school with Bob Clearmountain (Chiaramonte). He lived nearby and was a good bass player! Now he is a renowned recording engineer!

I just got my box set & I LOVE it. Granted, I don't have originals for comparison (which now I want based on this review). Roxy Music was a bit before my time -- I knew a few of the later more mainstream hits, but have totally discovered their complete works this past year & have totally FALLEN IN LOVE with them. I had been wearing my Be Bop Deluxe collections very thin from constant playing (another fairly recent discovery for me), & now it's Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry every day for the most part. I just can't get enough. With both BBD & Roxy Music, I find that I discover something new & interesting with each subsequent listening. I call them 'full course meals'. Anyway, I love my new box set...love having the LPs & LP artwork very very much. And, thanx for the splendid review :)

Me and my friend discussed which was the last of the good old vinyls before the age of the CD. We didn't find any newer albums than Avalon that had good quality vinyl.

Just got this set (signed by Bryan Ferry =) It looks ok, but what REALLY annoys me is how difficult it is to put the inner sleeves back in the covers.

it's amazing how Fashion and music repeats itself ever 10 to 15 years. I remember burning my albums to disc or downloading them from Apple. then I just threw all my albums out. there's nothing that sounds better than vinal.

Thanks for the review, particularly the way different pressings sound - I love that sort of info. I'm not familiar with the earlier works of Roxy Music so this was interesting. However, with the price of the box set rather high, I'll probably seek out the originals of the first three albums and see how I like those. Great stuff! Cheers, Tom

I've been searching for a high quality videos of Roxy Music and have yet to find any. Unlike all the other big bands (Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin, Eagles) there seems to be very little out there. What I HAVE found seems to be really low quality.

7 dollars for a box set. Holy crap what a steal. I love Roxy Music. Avalon is my favorite album. Andy Mckay the best looking in the group. I have alot of different pressings of each Roxy album

Michael, you are wrong about the US jacket picture of Country Life. I am holding in my hands US Atco SD 36-106, and the girls are indeed on it. As I recollect, the censored cover came out several years later.

Also not correct. I vividly remember looking that record up quite often in the record store in my early teen years :D So that would be early to mid seventies, and that cover was on display right out in the open. A favorite of my 13 year old self.

Im a swedish Roxy fan since the 80ies.. and to all Ferrys solo stuff (almost) as well. One thing I never got any answer to, is why the band broke up after Avalaon? I´ve seen lots of interviews with band members but I never get any answer to this? Do you have any Idea? I mean, they had something magic about them, and they were just getting better. Why did they split up in 1983?

Basically the new Miles cut is EQd lower than the original. Which is what he usually does when compared to other originals. I find it often muffles performances too much and rarely prefer his cuts over originals.

Michael, I don't know crap about Roxy Music, except for a couple of hits. In a couple of your videos you're singing high praises for "Avalon". As far as I can tell, their whole disco is on Spotify (paid). Would Avalon be the first album to really dig into? Obviously, vinyl is the end game. If I like something enough, I'll buy a physical copy of it. I'm wondering if this same remaster of Avalon is available outside of the box set.

***** Spotify has the 1999 "digital" remasters of everything. Spotify Connect (connects directly to their servers) with my AVR-X7200wa sounds pretty good for the most part. Some artists submitted low quality files and it's very obvious. I'm amazed every time I stream Pink Floyd - Pulse, at times it sounds like it's in surround sound coming from two speakers! Absolutely amazing when a producer puts the time in to create a very broad soundstage. I have the originals of Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH, and The Wall that my parents had when I was a kid. They sound really good still. Although, The Wall was pressed on pretty flimsy wax! The 200g Rush remasters sound fantastic! Listening to Stranded now... Very different from Love Is The Drug and Ferry's Slave To Love! Amazona has really good spatiality. Very cool, thanks Michael!

I have the original polymorphism Roxy collection but don't like the sound much. My favourites are the first three with the original Island press of Stranded taking first prize in the quality stakes. I looked at my Avalon and whilst being a bit scratched it is the same UK vn you have. Vocals are front and foremost and some great percussion on this one. Might seek the US copy to contrast.

Roxy Music along with Bowie & Mott The Hoople were my musical passions in '72. Those Roxy covers are works of art but the first with Kari Ann Muller on the sleeve is just beautiful. Despite his high school image Graham Simpson was probably the most off the wall of all the Roxy band members. Simpson was a founder member but following the release of the first album he just just decided to leave the band & travel. He later returned to London and died in 2012 as a semi recluse.
