Great Version. I was lucky enough to see him on the same bill as Johnny Winter and Dickey Betts in the mid-eighties.

The guy was over the top! I saw him numerous times in and around Pittsburgh during the mid/ late '70's as his producer, then, Jay Reich, was from the Steel City. In person, I have not...before or since..seen any one command the guitar as well as he did. One time stands out...he played slide...using a switchblade...after the encore finished, he flipped "Nancy" over..and stuck the blade in her wooden backside!

There are other great players, but none better than Buchanan. He's got the tone, he's got the technique, he's got the soul, and he knows every trick in the book (including the ones he invented himself). And he never showboats -- he lets his hands and his instrument do all the talking.
@RootBoyJim3 жыл бұрын
Well, Danny Gatton...and maybe the Hellecasters
@bloozedaddy Жыл бұрын
All these techniques were in use for quite a while. I'd say this entire performance is based on showboating and that's exactly what he was going for... speed picking and even some EVH style tapping. You must be watching a totally different video.
@sireliot21499 ай бұрын
I love listening to Roy. He does throw in showboating or parlor tricks here and there. I suspect its tongue in cheek. Jeff Beck makes similar use of the volume knob, and has subtle wizardry with strat tremolo. Some call it airplane noises, but when they are "on" they are both incredible.

He was an incredible blues guitar player. What stands out besides his great picking is that he didn't use pedal effects. The sounds he got out of his Telecaster and the strings he used were magnificent. Of course the amplification.

I dig this because of the stacattoesque attack rythm that is maintained at will. But I really really love this song on his album. ..there is a pause just after opening defining rift where he just EXPLODES for about 90 seconds......jarring! Yes Gary Moore n Jeff Beck n Danny Gatton n Van Halen were influenced (Moore I believe decided to listen to all Roys songs to really get to understand his technique) by Buchanan but being artist they created their own voice.
@lylecosmopolite14 жыл бұрын
It was in 1978 or 1980 that I first read, in the Chicago Reader I think, that Roy Buchanan was the greatly undervalued master of the electric guitar. Back then the fellow had cut only 2-3 vinyl LPs that had not sold particularly well. He needed a day job and played only in a suburban DC roadhouse on Friday & Saturday evenings. IMO, he also looks like a college prof, not like a rock star. Dozens of wannabes are dead or burned out. Roy soldiers on.
