I’m a pilot for a major airline. Back in the early regional airline days, I brought Roy into Minneapolis to connect to Phoenix where he had a gig coming up. He loved airplanes and was a very accomplished pilot in his own right. He invited me to sit with him in the gate area before his flight and we talked airplanes for 45 minutes. I never once mentioned I, “played” guitar (not a total fool, y’know!). He said, “I’m surprised a young fella like you would even know my name.” I told him that having been raised in Alabama, I was put down in front of the TV to see every episode of, “Hee Haw” that ever aired and that I knew his name before I knew all my relatives’ names! He gave me his autograph for my favorite uncle who idolized him, shook my hand, said, “nice landing back there!”, and we parted company. Class act all the way.

I remember watching Roy on Hee Haw and seeing him on the Tonight Show one time that he finished a song with a broken string and never even mentioned it had broken until the end. But this old black and white stuff goes back to before I was old enough to know what the hell was going on.

I,m a pretty well established session musician so I know a thing or two as you can imagine. What Roys playing isn’t difficult at all BUT it’s his feel for the guitar that not many musicians can achieve Hendrix being another one . Brilliant

It's hard to imagine that Benny Hill wasn't aware of Roy's schtick, especially the facials - they two just seem too eerily similar. As someone mentioned, because Roy was so funny and such an entertainer they forget what an amazing guitar player he was.
