The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I saw Roy Clark in person years ago. During the introduction (of 'Thank God And Greyhound') he said that this was his favorite song. In my humble opinion country music has devolved in the last 35 years.

These new guys want to be rock stars. True country music has been watered down by Rock n Roll....bring back Hank and Willy and the gang.

I could not have said this better myself. The 90s were the last great singers and songs of Country Music. Clint Black, Vince Gill, Reba McIntyre, Patty Lovelace, and a few oldtimers left like Johnny Cash, George Jones, and Willie Nelson. God Bless the Classics.

@@samsmith4216 Look at what Roy *doesn't* do here... After 2:05, he doesn't play guitar - he lets all other instruments take over for the finale.

How ironic...at the time of this performance, both “The Ed Sullivan Show“ and Roy’s “Hee Haw” were weekly programs on the CBS schedule....less than a year later, BOTH shows were cancelled by the network due in large part to “The Rural Purge”

Many years after hearing this song, and having forgotten all about it, it was my turn to watch the black smoke curling up around those tail lights. I laughed all the way home.

I watched him on a live production on TV. He was playing a 12 string and....bing! a string broke! Then another! THEN another! He never flinched. If I hadn't seen it w/my own eyes..... And here, a song I sang often in my "old days" at the end he missed the words: "That big diesel motor is 'a playing my song....." he paused and that smile...oh that lovely smile....then closed w/"I've been silent too long...." How can any one after that..not love him.

Roy Clark could play the strings off of anything! And he was quite the comic also! "Thank God And Greyhound" fit Roy's humor perfectly! I also love happy endings! What could be happier than a wicked ex getting on a bus? 😂😂

A musical genius! My Dad was a huge fan in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s. I was just talking to my Mom about Roy Clark and she told me my Great Aunt Shirley used to go and watch him in D.C. ! Stevie Ray Vaughan said he was the best of the best!
