Following his testimonial game with Celtic, Roy Keane received a hero's welcome and surprised everyone, perhaps even himself, by taking the microphone in the centre circle afterwards for an emotional farewell speech.
The attendance at the game was 69,591, a record crowd for a testimonial match in the U.K .
Roy played for Celtic in the first half but ran out for United after the break, to the delight of the United fans. Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs combined to set up Cristiano Ronaldo to score United's winner after 55 minutes.
Keane, who left United that previous December, told the crowd: "This is something I'll remember for the rest of my life."

He was pretty much let go for for criticising the United team at the time, Ironic that he had been doing it is whole career. It's what made us a better team. Many ex players recite how he would encourage them to do better by doing so. When he got to the end of his career he was criticised for it, guess him coming to the end of his peak had more to do with it. Let's be honest there have been times over the past few years were we could have done with Keano giving some home truths. Pogba would not got away with half of his Bullshit with Keano in that changing room. True Leader and Balls of Steal. Not some Posing wannabe flirting with other clubs.

It was less to do with the end of his peak and more to do with the end of an era. The league was going all in on being a french clone(and it's oh so close now) and if you're going to copy the french or the spanish or the italians you have to be very weak, very spineless, very cuddlesome, Roy was none of those things and criticizing players without some kind of home office control was the last thing they wanted. Roy represented that more than ANYONE else in the premier league so they swung the hammer and off he went, and you never saw ANY of the other players who would go in on their own lads do it anymore. The sad part is Roy is so jabbed by it I don't think Fergie will ever be able to sit him down and tell him this was why it happened tl;dr- It was censorship from the league to turn the BPL into a more "welcoming" hand holding, baby league like the rest of them, and it worked

The best defensive midfielder in the lifetime. Makelele, Vieira, Gattuso, Effenberg, Essien, None of them had the leadership ROY KEANE had. A monster of a player tbh.

If I was a Man U fan there I'd actually be insulted by that. Why are you thanking me for coming to your testimonial? What am I supposed to do as a Man U fan? Not come? Same thing as to why you don't go around praising the postman for delivering your post.

Ferguson was a winner just as much as Roy. But I think he wanted rid of Roy, an aging player in order to have the strongest possible squad. Keane was too strong of a character in the locker room to just phase out or have him on the bench. It didn't have to end that way, but Ferguson saw an opportunity to end it abruptly for Roy and took it.

But keano tried it with fergie at man u in this season in the same way he did with mccarthy with the republic of ireland team in japan/korea 2002...Both times. lt was keano who came out of it looking like the fool....the fact is?...ls that keano became an disruptive influence in the later years of his playing career

@@user-li3fr8jl3b its actually a pretty decent analysis of the situation. None of us were there all you can do is speculate. Keane was well past his best and seemed to be highly critical of players like Rio and Wayne and was probably creating a negative environent that wasnt helping the team anymore. Fergie was building a new team and knew Roy was well past his best. If Ronaldo said the same things Fergie def wouldn't have kicked him out 🤣

Ferguson was clearly asking Roy if he wanted him to say a few words to the crowd first and Roy was having none of it. Ferguson is clearly pissed off at not getting the spotlight as usual. Keane stood his ground as always and told him to do one.
