I owned the Sorcerer soundtrack for years before buying the film on DVD. I loved Tangerine Dream and the CD was in the bargain bin. It did not prepare me for the movie!

I unfortunately didn't get to see Sorcerer when it was in theatres and caught it when it played on a cable movie channel. I loved it. It would be decades later that I had the opportunity to see Wages of Fear and finally compare the two films. They were unique in their own way and I couldn't say that one was better than other. However the truck crossing that crumbling bridge is still the highlight of the Friedkin remake. It's a shame that it failed to get the appreciation it deserves. I don't understand why the public rejected it; it's a tense action film.

This is a tribute to Roy Scheider who stars in this movie. Its a remake of a French film entitled " Wages of Fear ". " Betrayal " is a fitting name for this piece considering what transpires on the film. Friedkin used Scheider in his Hollywood productions like " French Connection" to add balance to the cast. To bad he is gone.

As a child in the 80's I grew up associating Roy Scheider with no other film than JAWS. But Scheider was one of my favorite actors. He starred in films when movie cinema was so original & this film, The Sorcerer, is certainly no exception. I've strongly been much remiss on Scheider's passing but his cinema domain for if none other but me alone still persists on he surely is a true cinema masterpiece to whom of which I shall never let fade. Thanks for the memories Roy! Your movies keep me young!

caught "Sorcerer" randomly on cable while on vacation in Florida, Aug 1980...captivating! then in the 90s in SF they had a showing when Friedkin came in town; at a nearby theater they ran "Wages of Fear" the same day, different time, saw both on the big screen...amazing! nice clip, sir!

As a lifelong fan of William Friedkin, it is truly great to see that so many of you appreciate this wonderful film! To Zerokomma: you did a truly tremendous job for this tribute clip!! I salute you! For those who are interested, Friedkin's "The Exorcist" is being released on Blu-Ray on Oct.5th; he has indicated that, in fact, he is considering giving both "Sorcerer" and "Cruising" the Blu-Ray treatment in the near future, although no official dates have been set.

I found an awesome blogspot solely dedicated to Sorcerer, and thanks to it for example I came across very awesome and positive review from 1979 by some female critic who preferred Sorcerer to both the original novel and Clouzot's version! Long live the Sorcerer!

I've seen this movie today very early morning and now I'm obssessed like a maniac about it. As if the Sorcerer has cast a very powerful charm spell on me. Ever since I stumbled upon it to expand Friedkin's filmography and after my friend highly recommended it I wanted to see it badly, and it didn't dissapoint one bit. The movie has very German feel to it, especially Herzog's. Wonderful tribute by the way. I'm glad so many people call it now a masterpiece or one of their fav movies of all time!

Could you imagine Hollywood trying to remake this film today?
@zenjon78929 жыл бұрын
Two things: 1) Roy Scheider's face at 0:15 is what I feel like when I take physics tests; 2) I think they used real dynamite to blow up the roadblock tree because it actually detonates like dynamite and not Hollywood pyrotechnics
@jjd86518 жыл бұрын
They actually used nitroglycerin ... not for the first scene where the guy drips it off his fingers, though...lol, but for the sorcerer truck explosion and the tree they did... " In its pure form, nitroglycerin is a contact explosive, with physical shock causing it to explode, and it degrades over time to even more unstable forms. This makes nitroglycerin highly dangerous to transport or use. In its undiluted form, it is one of the world's most powerful explosives, comparable to the more recently developed RDX and PETN." Sounds like it would be fun to get Trump to brush his teeth with this stuff...

hey me too. saw this film around 79 - 80 as a 3 or 4 year old on TV. Was haunted by certain scenes (trucks, truck over bridge, blowing up tree, dynamite). As i grew older i searched for the film but never found it. I searched everywhere. Up until about 5 or 6 years ago i'd totally forgotten about it. One day while looking at a poster displaying classic movies i saw a pic of the truck crossing the bridge and i knew it was it. I can't explain how much it means to me to find this film.
@DippBlue14 жыл бұрын
yeah zero, thanks for your reply; I was just a little kid when I saw this movie for the first time (79 or 80?), and It got stuck in my head, especially the part when they blow up the tree and of course the bridge part. You did a great job with this tribute. I hope they will bring this movie back for new generations to see (in theathers) because these kinds of movies you do not get to see these days. DB.

I remember seeing the original version of this at school. Our French teacher was going through a phase of screening these old French movies. (Also saw "Les Quatre-Cent Coups", but that's neither here no there. . . ) It was a terrific movie, really my style of thing - these desperate men transporting nitroglycerine on their trucks to blow out a fire. Great story. PS: RIP Roy Scheider. You are missed, man.

(continued) . . . and MUSIC !!! Just fantastic. Some people may think Sorcerer doesn't stand up to today’s super action movies, but all action and no subtlety is not what makes a movie great. Which Sorcerer is. And so are Scheider and TD. The original Wages of Fear was made in a different era, when movies were coming of age, and Sorcerer is one of those rare examples when a remake is actually better than the original. Thanks for the clip zerokomma.

Completely agree on your examples, both Blade Runner and Under Fire being two of my personal favourites. Different times back then when music did not simply accompany the film in terms of rhythm or style with flashy Dolby Effects but functioned as a character contemplating on the films drama and mood. Goldsmith's Alien"comes in mind as a perfect example.

Friedkin himself said that he first time heard Tangerine Dream on the opening of "The Exorcist" in Munich, and that he would ask them to make music for that film if he knew of them earlier. I think that that would be strong combination.

I've come to the conclusion that Sorcerer masterfully combines not only the naturalism of Herzog, but also the bleak, uncompromised nihilism of Peckinpah with a distinctive perversity of fate a'la Bunuel. It is fully a post-modern work of art that is very avantgarde and self-aware despite being inserted - at the surface structure - into a body of very enjoyable and spectacular adventure movie.
