People forget Shaw was 42 when he fought Lenny. Lenny was 29 in his prime if you can call it that. Big difference 42 and 29. When years later Roy asked Lenny for another fight. Lenny was 42 and said Roy I am too old these days. Roy said are you joking you are the same age I was when we thought. Now I am 56

Not sure what this guys point is but Lenny beat him twice after that. Lenny may not have been the best fighter, he got beat in the ring a few times but there is no doubt he was the real deal and a very tough bloke. He grew up street fighting and perhaps he did lose a few but I doubt he lost many street fights. Roy was also a tough bloke. Both were a lot harder than everyone on here will ever be. Then we get the people saying they were bullies, well they aint going to be some let's have a kiss and cuddle and be friends type of blokes in their types of lifestyles. Of course they were both bullies. You don't get to be enforcers, street fighters and bank robbers without being an evil cunt. Both men were not to be crossed but one thing is for sure, they are both dead and no one would have the guts to say shit to their faces if they were still alive.

Roy shaw had a strange effect on a lot of these guys, there's 2 videos of lenny McLean destroying shaw but they still talk like it never happened and only talk about the first fight where shaw beat him.. Shaw was very fit that first fight and still relatively young, he had been training hard for years, stamina, strength training, he was in good shape, lenny could've run a mile without being knackered, he was a hard bloke but had no fitness and didn't know anything about proper fighting in the ring, where shaw had trained as a boxer so it's not surprising shaw won that first fight...second and 3rd fight lenny was fit.. He had had a couple of months of proper boxing coaching from a proper coach, he wasn't particularly skilled still but compared to the first fight he was more than ready., plus he was fit. No booze, better food and he was better than shaw, simple as that, I think if shaw was the same age as him he would of still battered him .. But.. McLean was full of shit, I've just read his book, he claims to of never been beat in or out of the ring...fact is he was beat many times .in the ring where it's documented with many witnesses and there's also lots of stories of him being beat on the streets, in pubs, clubs.. A friend of bill Gardner the west ham legend says he took McLeans weapon off him and he ran back in the club he was working at, bill is one of the most genuine characters you will ever hear about and he said his friend was the hardest man he ever knew, so as hard as McLean was there was blokes who were harder , he was a bully and a liar.. No1 is perfect though
@cuibono68723 жыл бұрын
A little bit off piste, but please indulge me, I used to follow West Ham in the 70s, before the ICF were heard of and when we went away there would always be a bit of trepidation, looking around to see if you recognised faces etc and you always gave a sigh of relief when you heard that Bill Gardner and the mile end mob were about, at the time it was always, "I've just seem Hampton and Gardner, the names went together like Mike and Bernie or Morecambe and Wise at the time, over the years I have read lots about Gardner, and the youngsters that followed, Cass Pennant, Leach and the rest but never nothing about Johnny Hampton, at the time he was revered but I have never heard him mentioned by any of the "famous" ex hooligans, was I imagining Johnny Hampton ?
