On June 4, 2023, Roy Wulf located and visited the grave of his great great grandfather, Andrew J Jewell, who served as a private with the 171st Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI) and as a sergeant with the 177th OVI during the Civil War. Roy wore a replica of what Sgt Jewell's uniform might have looked like. At this time, Roy is also about the right height and nearly the right age to represent his own Civil War ancestor.
UPDATE: According to new information we received on June 20, 2023, the date on Andrew Jewell's gravestone indeed seems incorrect, as we suspected. Although Mary Reel may have been born in 1851, other records indicate that Andrew was born in 1844, in October, November, or December of that year. This would indeed make him 19 when discharged from the 171st OVI, as his papers shown in the video indicate. The family's impression that he had lied about his age perhaps arose due to the incorrect dating of his birth, as we see on the gravestone. That said, there is still a bit of doubt on the truth of the matter!

@@celtichero9 When you get the chance, please take a look at our video about the Civil War navy and you will see some Marines from that era, especially at the flag raising ceremony. By the way, we also share your interest in Celtic culture, especially Scottish and Irish fiddling and bagpiping. We will probably be posting videos incorporating some of that also in the future (whenever we get the time). Erin go Bragh! 🙂

@@mr.roywulf I watched it already! Yes the Marine Corps didn't really play a large role in the civil war! As naval infantry there was very little ship to ship fighting also the Corps was very small at that time as well! They ran brigs and guard duty mostly! I love how you fold yourself into those old pictures and have awesome editing skills! By the way my full name is: Richard Michael Kevin Patrick O'Bryan my family is from county Donegal in Ireland and the custom is the 1st. son is a junior and the 2nd son has both grandfather's names! I guess you figured I am the 2nd son!! LOL

@@mr.roywulf Thanks, I am an actual real professional historian and writer. And I am eclectic too; that's why I have a mix of different videos on my channel. My ancestor fought under Colonel Elijah Clarke in the Revolutionary War and drove Banastre Tarleton and his greenjackets across the Tyger River at the Battle of Blackstock's Plantation. Do you do reenactments often? I don't but one day maybe. I think it important that we all remember the ancestors.

@@loungepuppy799 Thank you for your efforts to remember history and preserve it. Our private joke about Tarleton is always to refer to him as "Tavington" as was done in the film "The Patriot." 😄Yes, we regularly do Civil War and Revolutionary War reenactments and living history as well as fife & drum and other historical musical performances. We were marching around in wool yesterday at Mt Vernon. 🙂

What a great and honorable thing you did for your GGGrandfather! Thanks So Much for sharing this! My GGGrandfather Amos Rineer volunteered for three terms in the Pa. Calvary. His tomb stone says Co. G 21st Reg. PA Cav. He was 87 when he passed in 1912. Since he volunteered 3 terms I haven’t been able to discover all his engagements but I do know he fought at Antietam. My Grandfather was to receive his metals, papers and sword upon his death but never did, as someone grabbed these items before my Grandfather could get them. How I would have loved to see these things. Thanks Again and Many Blessings! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Thank you for the information on your outstanding GGGrandfather. From the FindAGrave website, I see that he is buried in Quarryville Cemetery. I have not visited that cemetery, but I have sounded Taps at the grave of General John F. Reynolds and played a rope tension drum at the grave of a particular Union drummer boy in nearby Lancaster Cemetery. Part of the challenge of visiting graves is finding out exactly where in the cemetery a particular grave is located. On the map for Quarryville Cemetery on the FindAGrave website, there is no GPS marker for the exact location of your GGGrandfather's grave, but there is a GPS location for John Galen Rineer (1923-2018), and I suspect others in the Rineer family would be buried nearby. I sometimes visit Lancaster, so perhaps I will have the opportunity to sound Taps (and perhaps also the cavalry charge!) at your GGGrandfather's grave. :)

Mr. Wulf: If the date of your Grandfather's enlistment seems a bit too off, I'd suggest you look up the history of JOHN CLEM, aka "Johnny Shiloh." It might help your perspective.
@mr.roywulf

The family always said that Andrew Jewell had lied about his age getting into the war. Other records show that he would have been 18 years old, but perhaps those records are based on what he told the army when he enlisted. So, it is uncertain if the year on the gravestone is correct or wrong. He may have been like John Clem and was really young. The gravestone is also one put up sometime in the mid 20th century, perhaps because the original gravestone was becoming unreadable. In any case, the matter of Andrew Jewell's exact age in the war is still unclear.
