I love typewriters, but being able to easily change a sentence that you wrote 5 pages ago in 12 seconds is something that makes me glad I was never required to use them. I'm sure when typewriters first started being manufactured people thought of writing a letter by hand as much more personal. I'm a fan of vintage typewriters because I think they are just built to last. While this looks nice, it would be more of a display piece for me. Kind of like the Crosley of typing. And, as an aside, it was Mike Nesmith's mom - not Mickey Dolenz' - who invented liquid paper.
@jamiewebster74324 жыл бұрын
Wasn't the mother of Dolenz, it was the mother of Mike Nesmith that invented liquid paper. :3 I'm a Monkees fangirl clearly.

I went to NYU. Our school color was exactly the shade of PURPLE your colleague is typing on! When I attended, back in the early 90's, we couldn't get one like that at the NYU BOOKSTORE! WHERE DID HE FIND ONE?!!! WHAT BRAND IS IT? Thank you. PS: "GO BOBCATS!" (NYU's feline mascot.)

Well this isn't actually a Royal. Their company shut down, this was made by Epoch, they just licensed the royal name, but I still like them. Tom Hanks said it best when he said the greatest typewriter has already been made, there is no reason for a company to invest in the material to make them like they did back in the 30s and 50s. A typewriter like that would cost thousands of dollars to the consumer just to break even, but it's cool they they still make them at all. These are a bit more fragile, they're not going to last for 100 years, but I like them. I've got a collection of 20ish antiques, most still work, and I'd still like one of these.

@proletariennenaturiste Жыл бұрын
Well, you can buy, even the old ones, you could potentially find them at thrift stores, flea markets, and antique stores, and those with the manual return handles. You can also buy these newer ones, but these newer ones like shown in the video are made with lesser durability, made in China, the old ones were made in the US and without planned obsolescence.

Why in gods name would you buy a new one when an old one is better-built, more reliable, readily-available anywhere, and are significantly better. Do yourself a favor and buy an Olivetti lettera 32, an Olympia sm-9, or a royal quiet deluxe. All significantly better machines and can be found in near mint condition for about half the price of these machines.
@cleverkitsune43022 жыл бұрын
Because a new one doesnt have issues with a platen thats hardened up to basicly concrete so that your slugs punch holes in the paper, also dont need to spend hours cleaning and troubleshooting a new one

Try hitting the keys harder ;) With these typewriters you really have to bottom out the keys while on PC you can more or less ''fly'' over your keys.

Buy a real Royal typewriter. They haven't been made for more than 45 years.
@brandonthorpe99054 ай бұрын
Yeah, these were made by Epoch, they just licensed the Royal name. They're meant to be used for crafting, writing personal notes, not for serious use. The old ones you find out in the world, for the most part, will still work, just may need cleaned out (use mineral spirits) to get the bars moving again. And they'll likely last another 100 years.
