The Alcazar of Seville, the Royal Palace, is located at the end of the old town of Seville, directly opposite the cathedral. Originally it was built as a fortified palace by Abd-al-Rahman III, Emir and Caliph of Córdoba, in 913. In the 11th century, Al-Mutamid, the king of Seville built the Alcázar, or what he called the Blessing Palace. For centuries it served as residence for many generations of monarchs. Nowadays it is the residence of the Royal Family during their stays in Seville.
Over the course of the centuries it became a complex of several palaces with beautiful courtyards. (Therefore, in Spanish one uses the term in the plural, the Reales Alcázares de Sevilla). Still today, many architectural features Moorish-style can be recognized.
It is the oldest palace in Europe, which is still used today. Since 1987 it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Alcazar lies behind the palace wall. We enter the Alcazar by the lion gate, the La Puerta de Leons and reaches the lion court.
To the right is the so-called Room of the Admiral in the Casa de Contratación, the House of Trade. It was built around 1503 to regulate the trade with the new colonies. Here, once met Ferdinand and Isabella with Columbus after his second trip.
To the left is the Justice Hall, La Sala de Justicia. The yard of Monteria, Patio de la Montería leads to the palace of Peter I, Palacio mudéjar o de Pedro I. Originally built in 1364, the palace is an excellently preserved example of Mudejar architecture, a combination of Christian architecture with Moorish elements.
Next to it is the Palace of Charles V, Palacio Gótico. Here, the marriage of Emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal took place in 1526.
Highlight of the Alcazar of Seville are the gardens, originally dating back to Charles V. The impressive gardens have undergone several stages of development, so that you can admire the influences of horticultural art of Arabia, France and Britain today. Fountains, watercourses, grottos and shady trees provide relaxation from the hustle and heat of the city.

In Arabic it is known as "Qasr Al Mubarak" and it literally means "the blessed palace". It was built by Abbad, the king of Seville, during the period of time called by Arab historians as "Kings of Creeds".

Was it build by the almoravids or almohads?
@abbddos
@abbddos 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-er6vc7hh1l Neither, It was built by the house of Abbad who ruled Seville between 1013 and 1095 after the demise of the Umawid dynasty in Spain. The house of Abbad was over thrown by the Morabids, or Moravids as you say, specifically Yusuf Ibn Tashfin in the early 1090s and were exiled to central Morocco where their last king, Al Mutamid, died and burried in a small isolated village.

I went to visit this palace and was so looking forward to it. Then just as I was about to walk in a tree just inside the first courtyard fell. It as a clear sunny calm day and it just fell over and crushed some tourist right in front of me. I think one woman surely died. It was the strangest thing imaginable and she was a little older and just didn't run as it was falling on her. I left the palace to ou last day and they shut it down immediately so I could not enter. But obviously, it was this poor woman and it really upset me. I sort of went into a little shock afterwards as one moment she was about to enjoy this palace the next she is dead and people were screaming.

@@myvideomedia - Thank you. They shut the palace afterwards for a few days as they had to get experts in the check all the trees were safe. It was right inside the entrance at 0:24 in your film. So I was at the front of the line waiting to enter and so I was standing looking at the courtyard on the other side of that entrance. At 0:33 you can see the large tree on right. The was another one identical further alone on the right. So you can see how big and heavy it is. It was a calm beautiful warm day and the tree just fell for no reason. That's why there is no matching tree further along on the right. It was incredibly upsetting obviously. Several people were crushed. Anyway, sorry to go on. I hope to return one day. Seville is absolutely stunning. I recommend to anyone reading this El Rinconcillo, the oldest bar in the city. It opened in 1670. It has absolute wonderful tapas and an amazing atmosphere. I did a self-arranged tour of several Moorish Spanish cities. I flew from the UK to Malaga, then took a train to Granada and then a bus to Córdoba and then train or bus (can't remember) to Sevilla and flew home from there. I book Airbnb in each place and stayed in an amazing medieval place with a courtyard in Granada. If you arrange that yourself it is a very reasonable trip.

You will not forget such an experience for the rest of your life! But you're right, Seville is worth a visit - because of the culture, the architecture, the history and the people. Its a great city! We also have visited a lot of cities in Spain, most organized by ourself, but we alway booked hotels and not Airbnb and took the High-speed trains where it was possible. All the best and a great future!
@AnyoneCanSee
@AnyoneCanSee 2 жыл бұрын
@@myvideomedia - Well, to be clear my partner of many years was Galician and so speaks perfect Galician, Spanish and Portuguese and we booked Airbnbs with local people. There are plenty of people with spare rooms that need extra income in Spain and you get to speak to locals that way. I suspect I was being judged for taking away rental properties from locals in your response as I know there is a backlash against Airbnb for this reason. Even the large medieval house with the courtyard was someone's home and also a guest house/Airbnb. It's a great way to meet local people and ask them about their city. Also, there aren't high-speed trains between all the destinations I listed, so I had to take a bus. My point was that there is plentiful cheap public transport, trains and buses in Spain and you don't even need to hire a car to travel around. You can do a 10-14cday of tour of all the great Islamic sites cheaply, organised on your own. I mentioned it for anyone reading as I know people spend four times as much on organised trips to see these sites or simply don't go as they think it is out of reach. Anyway all the best to you too.
