Royal Caribbean Dinner Episode 2 (French Formal Night & Italian Night)

Welcome to part 2 of our coverage of Royal Caribbean's main dining room dinner menu & food. In this episode we'll explore the food & menu from the French Night (also the first formal dress-up night) & then Italian Night. All the food you will see are complimentary- included with your cruise fare.
There were several vegan dishes and no-sugar added desserts. Although for us, the vegan spaghetti from Italian night had meat in it, which was likely due to the kitchen trying to adjust to the new menu.

I have to tell you something. Yesterday my husband made pulled pork BBQ. I was eating my sandwich, not realizing I had my eyes closed and my shoulders were doing my best Joanne dance. My husband started laughing and I asked him what was so funny. He said I was doing an upper body dance. Immediately I thought of Joanne. He thought it was hilarious!

Thanks for showing all the menus slowly and clearly....it brings us right there with you in memory or imagination.....I am very curious: did your wife eat all of those dishes.....completely? It seemed that she is the only one eating and commenting in this whole series. Or does she lead with the first one or two mouthfuls and then you and your son finish the dishes? [wink]

Yeah all the food you see are shared between the 3 of us, and we usually eat 90% or more of it. Thanks for the comment! 🙂

Someone may have commented on this but I buy a product called yves veggie ground round in my local stores and in a spaghetti sauce or chili you can't tell the difference. I have served it to guests and they didn't think it was anything but ground beef. I find it hard to believe that the cruise line would serve meat to you in a dish that was clearly advertised as vegetarian.

We thought the same as well, that for sure it must've been imitation meat. But on the menu the dish was described as having "hearty mushrooms and a tofu crumble", and we didn't taste neither of those. We both tried it, and we're 99% sure it was ground meat like a regular Bolognese sauce.

Love your videos, reminds me of my time working on cruise ships.Maybe i am wrong but Royal Caribbean food looks quite ordinary both in terms of presentation and innovation compared to Holland and Celebrity.

I really wish I could eat the variety of foods that you eat. Brought up in England in the 50's I tend not to like spicy or hot foods...which appear quite a bit on menus these days. The deserts I have no problem with however😂

Yes the nice thing about cruising is that you can still enjoy a diverse range of cuisines without necessarily having to eat spicy or hot foods 🙂

I liked the Italian night better which is unusual as I do not care for Italian cuisine that much. I also like the inclusion of an Indian entree each night to give some better variety. Another great video.

Love the tenderloin (I just had that on Rotterdam). Filet mignon is just a slice of tenderloin cooked as an individual steak. It's probably much easier for a ship kitchen to roast the whole tenderloin, which is yummy too. That's a good looking menu. I'd have gotten tenderloin, and perhaps the lamb rogan josh to share.

Im sitting here watching your wife, Joanne?, eat knowing I’m probably eating Ramen noodles for dinner. Ive never ordered the pea risotto but it looks good. And the lamb curry makes me think of the lamb shank they serve, which is one of my most favorite entrees.

Yup they don't' have lamb shank any more, but did have lamb on several curry dishes during the cruise. As for that pea risotto- Joann did try though she didn't like the mint sauce. I tried it too and yeah it was a little odd but finished it anyways 😁

I was working on the final episode and yup they actually still have it! It was on the Bon Voyage (final night) dinner and called "Braised Lamb" but is pretty much lamb shank 🙂

We did ask the waiter and you can kind of hear part of his explanation in the video. Basically he didn't seem to know and that it was their first go with the main menu. No big deal for us but hopefully they've gotten the dish straightened out for guests who are adhering to a vegan diet. Thanks for the question!

are they still letting passengers order as much as they want (eg 1 pax ordering 2 starters , 2 mains)? I read somewhere online that some lines might introduce surcharges in the future for that or possibly disallow that , as part of their contemplated cost cutting measures - it would very sad indeed if they implemented such measures

Yup it's still not a problem, other than on lobster night it'd cost extra for additional lobster(s). I think it's a reasonable new policy to charge for extra lobsters because we've seen some guests ordering like 6(!) lobster tails in the past!

Thank you so much for the play by play! Okay, here are some of my thoughts on the new menu: as a whole, it all looks fine, but nowhere near as creative, colorful and dazzling as I remember. It feels like every cruise line is going this direction for their MDR food, thus steering people more toward specialty dining, I dunno… I love that they still have the tenderloin. That’s always good. The salmon looked dry - not what I would expect from RCL. The seafood pasta looked great - nothing fancy, but still very very good. Beef Bourguignon, Excellent 👌. And they kept the escargots! 😘. Curried lamb, great choice…. Okay, so I’m feeling a little unsure about that crème brûlée. The caramelized sugar on top should be thicker! And the cream on the bottom should be more thick and creamy in texture. The cappuccino cake - total waste of time. If you can’t taste the cappuccino, then why bother. Keep the warm apple cobbler at the buffet. To me, that is not formal restaurant food. Cookies? Toasted almond cream puffs??? *BORING!* Don’t even get me started on the $17 lobster tail… I dunno… I think overall it looks okay. I mean, there are things on the menu I would be fine with, but where’s the excitement? The fun? The elegant presentation? I felt like prior to 2020, dinner fare in the MDR was more festive. The included fare they’re offering now looks very, for lack of a better term, “budget-friendly.” I felt like Princess did a way better job on a voyage I took with them back in November. Sorry to be a critic, but I *love* RCL, and I don’t want to see them slide backwards in the food department. I’m booked on an Eastern Caribbean voyage on the Harmony this April, so I’m looking forward to seeing everything for myself. In 2019 on the Oasis, the included food was absolutely insane, and that was my very first cruise ever, so I’m finding it really hard to adjust my expectations!

They used to have a fancy seaday lunch too with a little buffet as well, and that's gone too. Overall there were still had some really good dishes here and there, but not as exciting. Good question- it tasted like regular spaghetti, so no egg. But yeah not sure about the cheese. This was the first time they're serving the new menu so maybe they were having trouble with that particular dish- hope it's true vegan now.

Italian night looked good, doesn't excite me quite as much, but it certainly looks as good as Capitano on MG. I liked the look of this chicken parm more than the enormous pounded chicken being served in Capitano (which leads me to think that they are pre-cooked, pre-sealed by sysco b/c there is no way Carnival would willingly serve such a gigantic flattened breast as a serving). The parm in this vid looked more normal.

Just a question. If you ordered vegan and then thought it wasn’t why would you have not sent it back and gotten the real vegan spaghetti? A real vegan would get a massive stomachache if they are real beef instead.

We're not vegan, but did inquire about the dish with our waiter, but he pretty much just said that's the way the kitchen made it, and that it was the first time they're doing this new menu. So hopefully Royal has addressed this in future cruises. Thanks for the question!

The food looks very pedestrian to me. The presentation of the soups with soup spilled on the side of the cup is off putting. The creme brulee, for example, didn't seem to have the requisite crunch when you hit it with your spoon. When I have had it served elsewhere, it has some berries or at least something to dress it up. I hope this is merely the look of the food and the taste experience is better. I am concerned that the "medium rare" steak was somewhat "chewy". It honestly looks like cafeteria food in some cases. I am booked on a European cruise this Fall with Royal Caribbean and so far I'm not that impressed with the Main Dining room. Sorry. I do appreciate you videoing and sharing all this information here for us to see. Thanks so much.
