Royal Caribbean VS Celebrity Cruises - I tried both and one was better

My husband and I are in our early 50's. We love Celebrity. Just too many kids and crowds on RC. We like the laid back, upscale atmosphere on Celebrity. I do miss some of the activities, but it's worth it to us for the relaxation we get on Celebrity. I have a plain palate, and I don't like spicy food. So to me, Celebrity food is great (but I have ordered off the kids menu once in a while). This shows there is a cruise line for everyone. And your preferences may change with time.

There are two Celebrity cruise lines - all ships up to Solstice class, and then there is Edge class. I find them to be two very different experiences. And the edge class specialty dining venues are top notch, as is their entertainment. But if you just want a theme park at sea, then just stick with Royal.

I find Edge class ships more limited than Solstice in some ways. They are quite different. Carnival and NCL also have theme park elements on some of their ships.

I'm not a professional cruiser. I'm researching options for our 25yr anniversary, our first cruise since 2002. Let's put it this way...I compared the price of RC & Celebrity to the location we want to go to on the dates we want to travel. The length of time is the same and the ships are comparable - age, size, etc. The cost for RC is $1000+ higher altogether. We are cruising as a perk to get to our destination. Being down to earth people that don't require every single thing we have every dreamed of, we're choosing the more (by far) economical option.

I must admit that the entertainment on RCCL Oasis class ships is the best, however being a retired senior, I prefer the laid back atmosphere of Celebrity.

I am the same as you. I like RC over Celebrity. The food was too upscale on Celebrity for my palate. I like the options on RC and and it was just an overall better time. I am going on Celebrity once more, but I do have the majority of my cruises booked this year and next with Royal.

Great review! My husband and I have wondered about trying Celebrity for the more mature atmosphere, but you changed my mind. We both have simple food tastes, love the solarium and the active amenities, and love the 4 free drinks/day. Thanks for sharing! Guess I'm a loyal to Royal girl.

I like both Royal and Celebrity for different reasons. I go back and fourth. I don't think you'd go wrong on either. Celebrity tends to have less kids.

You can't compare RC and CC. The ships are so different. On CC, Millenium class and Solstice class ships are so different to Edge class ships. On RC Voyager class, Quantum class, Oasis class and Icon Class are so different. The experience on them is so different. No point telling people one is better than the other especially after 1 cruise verses 20.

You should really try the Edge class ships. I too was disappointed with the Silouette but the Beyond was so much better. Sadly, my voyages on RCCL have been at the bottom end of my experiences at sea. The food was horrible compared to Celebrity considering they are owned by the same multinational. Maybe because I'm no longer 20 something, I find less enjoyment hanging out with lots of children and 6000 of my closest friends.

Perfect timing and an interesting video, thank you! We are sailing on our first Celebrity cruise next month on Beyond. We are in the 60-70 age bracket, hopefully it will suit us. We are looking forward to the upscske vibe. We love RC and have more cruises booked. I wonder if an edge class ship would have been a better fit for you.

I just got off the Edge sailing on Alaska. I liked the food, the ship was beautiful, but I was bored and didn't feel there was enough to do. My biggest problem was children in the casino, sitting at the sunset bar which I took a photo of said child. Smoking, ask over, and no one did anything until you went and complained.

Too bad you chose Silhouette as your first Celebrity ship. We didn't like Silhouette either, but we're trying Beyond to give them another chance.

I think Silhouette is the best ship Celebrity has. Beyond is an Edge ship and I have issues with them. But everybody has different tastes, preferences, and use the ship differently. I can see where the pool activities and high tech theater and shows in the Club and Eden would excite some people as well as the change in placement and size of the Martini Bar.

Royal for me also! Celebrity perks don’t compare anymore! And, they are taking away the best perks in the casino as well!

Celebrity had no options to me. The main dining was almost the same every night. I like a variety of dishes. I found that it wasn’t that many restaurants to go to and everything closed way too early with pizza being the only option. I like a cruise that has 24 hour restaurants and a big variety of food. So celebrity was a beautiful ship just kinda boring with a bland taste

Most reviewers say Celebrity is better for men in their 50s like me, but you make me think maybe it's not. Kids can be delightful and annoying but so can other adults. I would never go on Costa as I don't smoke and that really pisses me off!
