It isn't a Surly, stands to reason that the thing is awkward to service! Very nice classic, Bruce. Enjoy the ride.

Good video Bruce, it's always good keeping on top of maintenance, and having peace of mind that the bikes always good to go every time you open the garage doors to go for a ride, long or short trip ! Cheers Mel 🍻

I’m a firm believer that changing oil more frequently is the best thing you can do for your engine. A Mobil tech said that to me years ago, get the cheap stuff and change it frequently!
@Coastriderscotland2 ай бұрын
I am with you on more regular oil changes Sid 👍 that is what i do with the Jeep 😜👍

Nice video Bruce, it is good to see lubrication of threads, all my bikes have been dry assembled and this does cause problems with older bikes, I have taken off every nut and bolt accessible on my Bullet (2015) and Bonneville (2001) and wet assembled with Shell grease, stops corrosion and water ingress, costs next to nothing and dealers don't seem to do it. I would keep the alloy engine guards, if they bend or fracture they have done their job and can be replaced, as you say steel might to too strong and just transmit the impact into the main frame of the bike. Thanks for the video Tim
@Coastriderscotland2 ай бұрын
Thanks Tim,those crash guards are really just to protect the tank and indicators etc if the bike falls over at standstill, yes the alloy part of the crash frame is better to break than bend a frame! 😁👍 Cheers Bruce

I always use blue thread lock. It's a bit easier to undo the bolt next time. And usually one blob is plenty in my experience. RE go a bit heavy with the threadlock sometimes at the factory.

Agreed. Always good to to a check of the bike. I call it a "rag check", as I do a weekly rag polish and check bolts and chain at that time. Looking forward to your mineral oil experiment. What I understand is mineral based is made from crude oil that contains some impurities like sulfer that tend to lead to breakdown under extreme use. Synthetic contains none of these. Four stoke street bikes rarely are subject to extreme conditions. So it boils down to cost. I run semi synthetic as I ride in town a lot sitting at traffic lights in 40C temps frequently. I tend to agree with sideweazel below, as frequent oil changes will always be the safest bet. 🙂 🥃

Hi Lance, i think this motor should be ok being a low stress and power output, worst outcome is a couple of hours spannering to fit the spare motor! 😜😁👍🥃

On my bikes, BMW K75, the crash bars attached to the engine, BUT were designed to pop off if too much force was applied, some folk complain, BUT they were designed to do that, otherwise the crankcases would get damaged, by the very things that were meant to protect the bike. Better the bars crack/deform/pop off than damage engine cases or the frame. Interested to see how you get on with the 20/50, good thing with diesel oils is they have a lot more detergent in them.
@Coastriderscotland2 ай бұрын
Hi that makes sense the brackets do that to protect against minor damage but not cause structural damage 😁👍 Be good to see the oil life and how well it works 😁👍

ah ok👍thank you Bruce ..Bruce it is better if you let the clutch cable run between the double tube frame, then it does not come in the direction of the exhaust manifold... ...not through the small hole in the frame, it will wear too much and break it
@Coastriderscotland2 ай бұрын
Yep i was informed the loop not on 2023 bikes and a loop stops the cable being as bent so will change it again tomorrow! 😁👍

Bruce, I managed to found a copy of the Reborn 350 workshop manual online. Unfortunatily I can't supply a link. However I just google Royal Enfield Classic 350 Reborn workshop manual pdf. After sifting through the results I found what I was looking for. It was quite a large file unfortunatily too big to email it you.

That loop on the frame downtube for the clutch cable to pass through was deleted in late 2022, so more recent bikes don't have it. It seemed to restrict the cable too much and the latter bikes have a bolt on wire loop on the left hand side of the bike. The later bikes also have just one lifting handle next to the top of the rear shock. On the more recent bikes the lifting handle on the right hand side of the bike is deleted. You're plan to use a cable tie is the best way to go and I wouldn't reroute the cable through that loop that is welded to the frame.
@Coastriderscotland2 ай бұрын
@@Trev350 i will prob refit the cable as before and add a loose cable tie, i never noticed those changes on the 23 bikes but come to think of it friend Bobs 23 Signals has one grab side handle! 😜👍👍

Hi Bruce, quick unrelated question if you don't mind... Where is the best place to buy a decent pair of camo trousers please? Cheers Trev
@Coastriderscotland2 ай бұрын
Hi Trev, for non military camp trousers the George clothing that ASDA sell are ok for the money around £20, but if you can get to a surplus shoo to try on British army used items then you will get your needed 3 sizes that they come in which are waist, crotch and leg length, then you can search EBay and get good deals- some ebay shops sell them in waist size in regular leg length so you may get the right fit 👍😁

@@Coastriderscotland Cheers Bruce. I've just discovered that there is a place down here that's reasonable local called Anchor Supplies. I'll give them a go. Cheers. And on a different subject; have you seen Glyn Owens video on fitting a Bullet J series Touring Seat? Well I've only gone and done it! ,,,😜
