Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 fuel consumption test! I was so wrong!

So, after everything so many people have experienced, I guess just to be on the safe side, every 200 km we should refill the tank.

The most important question about this bike is whether the fuel gauge is reliable and accurate. You would have to test ride until you run out of fuel and then refill the tank and count the number of litres. It is said that the useful capacity of the tank is about 1.5 litres less than the total capacity (13,7l) announced by Royal Enfield so keep care.

Mine seems accurate, always go down proportionate and blinks after about 190km of range. Only thing, if you put it on side stand, it will jump 2 bars up and it takes couple of minutes after you start riding to go down again.

the fuel gauge does not drop at a uniform rate and the top half of the fuel tank has a larger capacity then the lower half

My useful capacity is 10-11L. After that i got so anxious to fill her up because one time i was squeezing the throttle and the power was cutting in and out. I learned my lesson on my harley for running her almost dry every fill up. Replacing fuel pumps ain't cheap.

Fuel consumption depends on your weight and riding condition. Also 1 factor is what oil you use when you change oil. My GT650, using castrol oil consumes 25 to 28 km/l, but when i use motul, it reaches 28 to 30 km/l. So for making a benchmark like fuel consuption, this should also be included.

What specific motul are you using. My last oil change dropped my fuel consumption to 22. I used to get 29-33 before that.

I filled up….then ran it until I ran out of petrol (my Suzuki last bar goes until it disappears, the Enfield the last bar still shows when you’ve run out of petrol) and I got 277kms. Mixture of highway and urban riding….I floor it everywhere and don’t try to ride sparingly. I get 4.17L/100KM average. NZ Uses 91 Octane Fuel.

Poland uses 95, 98 and 100 octanes. I always use 95. The best usage I had was 4.26 per 100km. Thanks for watching.

For those of us in the US that only speak freedom eagles per budwiezer……. 4.26L/100km is 55 mpg…… I get between 52mpg and 57 mpg with a 1 time best of 62mpg

He he, for those of us on the right side of the pond who use 'proper' gallons - 4.54 litres/gallon, I average around 75mpg when riding 'normally' on mixed roads. Of course, this drops if riding more aggressively, or staying around town.

@@bigglesace1626 I am from your side of the pond but escaped to the other side where a gallon of fuel in Texas is less than a gallon in London England. After 8.5K miles I seem to have stuck at 53 to the US little gallon. Too much time at 85mph I suspect.

@@Juliang61 interesting pricing detail over here - diesel costs on mainland UK average at least 10p/litre more than unleaded e10 petrol. On the Isle of Man for the TT this week and diesel is 3p/litre cheaper than e10 petrol. Just shows how our fuel tax system works. While 'pootling' around, observing speed limits here, apart from the unlimited bit over the mountain section, my Honda cb500x is averaging 95-100mpg. I must try harder, lol.

That's just fine even 250km per gas tank. On my Ninja 400 I could do more than 350+ highway kilometers but in city riding everyday I could do around 270-290.

The fuel efficiency that you got is still low for the kind of road you rode. It is 23.7 km/litre. My interceptor gives around 28 km/litre and that too in erratic crowd filled road in India where I could not engage the sixth cog. The number that I quoted is under the condition of two-up riding along with luggage weighing about 5 kg and heavy accessories which weighs another 5 kg. Forgot to mention that I don't ride hard, i.e. no quick acceleration and deceleration. Also, I make use of engine braking a lot. Also, I conducted a full tank test, which is risky, as it might damage the fuel pump. I got 340 km for a full tank.

@@bartgoodride Off course, it is a tremendously important subject for any Indian. When it comes down to purchasing a vehicle, 2 wheeler or 4 wheeler, the only thing that matters to us is fuel efficiency. It is prime. Then comes annual maintenance cost and reliability of the vehicle which transcends to reliability of the components (electrical, mechanical and foundation related).

hello there ... my interceptor is a stock 2021 model .. i am a heave guy .. 105 kilos .. i always ride with my wife (60 kilos ) of course you have to take into consideration helmets jackets boots etc so about 180 kilos overall... On country roads with revs up to 4.500 and with not aggressive riding i got about 3.8 to 4 liters to 100 kilometers... The worst millage i made with my interceptor is on highway with foul speeds (160 on the clock plus or minus ) and it was 4.6 liters for 100kilometers ... Check your tires pressure, use foul synthetic oil (as RE recommended) check you sparkplugs etc ... even that you did actually managed to have better millage, my filling is that you can still do better.. @@bartgoodride Mate I do feel you you are not crazy if you do that milage you do it ... I feel that you have to find a proper workshop to check your bike... you must be the only interceptor been so thirsty.... proper valve check spark plugs etc ... something is wrong with your bike

I get around 80kmpg on mine. I generally ride pretty hard too. So by that calculation I should be able to get around ~240km out of the tank. Never tried getting that far though. I never trust the fuel gauge 🤣

That's pretty damn good. The number you quoted transcends to 34 km/litre. I don't think anyone in India get that kind of value and that too under hard riding.

I noticed one problem with it, every time you put the bike on a side stand the fuel level goes up two bars and then it takes 5 minutes to show real level again.

It depends on your mileage. For the first 10,000km i was getting about 230-240km on a tankful, but after 15,000km i was getting close to 300km on a tank. I fitted an S&S 2 into1 and it dropped to around 250km around town for each tank, but still get close to 300km on the open road.

STOP!!! You should NOT fill you tank all the way. One of those "little holes" sucks gasoline vapor from your tank into the charcoal filter. If you fill your tank all the way up, liquid gasoline will get into your charcoal filter and ruin it.

I have been through 2 different gasoline rationing episodes here in the USA. The way things are going with our anti-oil president I expect there will be more gasoline shortages in my future. I care a lot about fuel efficiency. Also, with Trump gasoline was about $2.10 per gallon for 4 years. With Biden it has jumped to over $4 and is now about $3.60.

@@doughoffman9463 Here in Rip-Off Britain petrol/gasoline is around £1.55 a litre (an English gallon is 4.564 litres) that works out at around £7.50p for an English gallon or 9.47 dollars. So an American gallon @ 3.785 litres would be £5.86p or 7.40 dollars. Hope my maths is sound.

Here in the US we know we are literally sitting on all the oil we could possibly use for the next 150 years or so. How much ethanol was in your fuel? 100% gasoline will take you more km per liter than fuel with alcohol in it. Also, have you checked the calibration of your odometer? Lastly, as we all know, fuel economy is highly dependent on other factors including driving cycle and operator weight. Google "fuelly motorcycle" for a fairly large database of various INT650 fuel economy numbers from a variety of different drivers and bikes.
