Royal Enfield Meteor 350 Exhaust Mod: We Removed The Cat Con And Made It A Straight Pipe

"Potato potato" - that's how you define a Harley Davidson motorcycle's sound. Similarly, in India, it is the unmistakable "dug dug" for Royal Enfield.
But then, BS-6 happened.
And it threw a spanner in the mix.
Gone is the lovely "thump" of the Royal Enfield single, replaced by a sound that is barely audible. How is a Royal Enfield a Royale Enfield without that lovely "dug dug"?
So, my friend Jaideep ( / lowratio4wd ) - a die-hard Royal Enfield fan - decided to do something about it. To get that "authentic" sound back, he decided to dump the catalytic converter from the exhaust - a simple mod - and replaced it with a stainless steel straight pipe that links the header to the Royal Enfield exhaust can.
The result: A sweet sounding motorcycle, how we believe it should have come from factory.
Of course this mod is not road legal, and we don't even intend to ride this bike this way - this is his demo motorcycle from one of his Royal Enfield dealerships - we just wanted to know what the bike would sound like.

Generally I like your blogs, but this time I must say, you sould not implant these short of ideas. You well know these are illegal, and it was done to reduce pollution. And by any mean we should go for pollution norms than the sound. I love the RE dug dug but pollution needs to be checked and I am ready to compromise on sound.

Meteor 350 first model without E20 engine mein straight pipe lagake catalytic converter hatake RE straight cut silencer which is back pressure calculated ko install karne se koi engine valve, mileage etc.. mein problem hoga ? Pollution karwate time catalytic converter install kar lenge. I want your suggestion on this.

I'm looking for a bit more power rather than more noise. On the Classic 500 lots of people in the UK made a conversion that improved breathing with a more open exhaust and a K&N air filter, then changed the gearbox sprocket for one with an extra tooth. This greatly improved the motorway performance. I think the Meteor 350 would benefit with the same treatment

What’s the use of doing such things apart from weight reduction and little thumpy sound ar't it going to pollute more now ... Thought of it earlier but did't do it besause of pollution and one thing more these types of under square engines require a little backpressure to run efficiently these are torquei engines they don' t behave properly in a free flow exhaust ... Nice Vid Abhinav. Had some queries about that mod. Removing the CatCon will reduce the back pressure to the inlet valves which might affect the combustion and the valves in the long run.. Has that been taken care of by inducing more glasswool in the stock RE exhausts... Just a query though.

Its not loud because that exhaust is designed to produce low frequency tone. Use complete hollow exhaust for loud sharp sound like old bullets. Nice content BTW 😉👍

A straight Catalytic onverter would have been better, for both, meeting exhaust targets, and, aural delight. But nothing beats a pushrod Bullet Engine exhaust note; with counter balanced pushrod Engines, we could have had the best of both worlds.

Can you still use the main stand? I say this as I think that the cat has rubber stops on it for the main stand. If you remove the cat their's nothing to stop the main stand.

The iconic bullet sound is annoying to some but many like it. I'm not talking about those hollow exhaust which are available for 900 rupees. I'm talking about the original indori exhaust from Royal Enfield. The sound is, well, iconic. The classic's long and silent exhaust also sounds very nice. The Meteor, just don't sound like an RE. But you gotta give some to get some. The vibrations are gone and now it is a comfortable touring bike with great fuel economy.

Every three months you have to put the cat con back on otherwise it'll fail the PUC test. But I'm sure the extra clever Dilli walas will have a way around that too.

The thing is some chapri won't understand the difference between dug dug dug and phat phat phat and get a really loud exhaust which will bother people. The sound in the video is perfect middle ground.

I think the stock exhaust sounds good even if its not that loud as older RE bikes. But the mod you showed would be adopted by those who love the thump even if the bike loses some of its fuel efficiency. One question though, Can this also be done on Honda CB350 given that you have extensively ridden that bike and you know it very well.

There will be no change in Fuel efficiency, as the fuel has already been burnt while reaching the catalytic converter. It only effects the emission.
