Francis I, who was crowned king of France at the age of twenty, was a chivalrous monarch, a builder of châteaux, a patron who gathered around him the most illustrious artists, poets, musicians, architects and engineers of the Renaissance, including Leonardo da Vinci, Benvenuto Cellini and Francesco Primaticcio. Young, athletic and an excellent dancer, he was to involve all those artists in the court entertainments that reached their height with the so-called “Magnificences” - extravagant and highly refined expressions of the art of the French court fête.
