WONDERFUL video!!! My late wife and I rode the train back in the late 90s, and your video was a lot like the video I shot from the open car. I made great use of my 8-mm camcorder that day! And the cab rides are priceless. You should have included some pictures of the Hanging Bridge; that thing is unbelievable. And I loved the railroad sounds; they are so much better than the dipstick "music" that some insist on adding to their videos. One like because I can't give you a "love." Wonderful!

Glad to see some motive power at the rear of the train. I was thinking that a 14-car consist including 3 "Great Domes/Super Domes" was a bit much for an AB set pushing 60 years old.

No the rear engine is for safety. A conductor was killed two years ago, while riding the rear end of a coach as they were backing up. The railroad was not to blame so I was told by a passenger that was riding that day. So the road still felt it needed to insure something such as that accident didn't happen again. They are a very well run company.

Incredible video and scenrery! This is as good as it gets for all of the excitement on the river, the cab ride, the people and of course, the views! I saw a flashing yellow on a signal at 4:14. Do these signals still work? When I was visiting a friend in 2005, we went to the bridge above the railroad, but I never got to ride this train. Very sorry that I missed it as I live in Southern California. Thanks again! Keith Johns of Indio, Ca.

The only crossing on the USGS 7.5' is a footbridge at 38 28.327 N, 105 21.246 W (paste coordinates into Google Earth). That bridge was used to access structures across the river. When hiking the gorge in '97, we figured it was the control house for a flume. If I had a better indication of where exactly in the canyon the abutments are, I might have more certainty to my guess.

It's cool they still use the track-side block signals even though this is the only train to use these tracks! Really hope to ride this train some day!

It's a really cool experience! They sometimes have to stop to rescue some rafters on the river, but the bar car and the diner car is really nice

Never more than 20 MPH, 10 to 15 usually. It's a short trip to Parkdale and return, so rushing out there and back would leave folks feeling cheated. It's a slow boat, but a very scenic trip 1000 feet deep in the gorge.

What was the car about midway that looked something like a B unit, with two exhaust stacks on the roof. Was it a power car for power to the other cars?

That would be correct.

More likely its a power generator car. Steam heating isn't used anymore and their GP7 and F's aren't equipped with HEPs.

I'll miss the old D&RGW FP9 locomotives. They're changing to more powerful (3000 horsepower vs. 1750) GP40-2's to handle the longer trains. It won't be TOO bad as the "Geeps" have a very distinguished long history of reliability themselves and can accommodate 2 passengers comfortably on the cab rides.

As a food runner on the train, I can definitely tell you that they have been repainted since then, to match the overall theme. In fact, one of the dome cars, the Buena Vista, was actually remodeled recently, along with a couple others. They look a lot nicer now.
