I'm proud to say that I've taken part several times in guard mount at the palace in Stockholm. I'm a musician in the Swedish Home Guard. We're not as glamorous as the Life Guard or the regular army band, but we still draw a crowd. 13:11. That's the colours of what was our home regiment until recently, namely I19 Norrbottens Regemente ☺️

Just a side note, Finland isn't part of Scandinavia, but part of the Nordic countries. Scandinavia is: Denmark, Sweden and Norway. (some people like to say that Åland, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland is part of Scandinavia, they have never been part of Scandinavia, you can dispute Island of course) Nordic countries consist of: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland, as well as the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland.

@@trickster33able In f.ex. Sweden the term "Nordic countries" (Norden) means Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland- with dependencies/autonomous territories mentioned in other comments, it doesen't mean the countries in the north as I know f.ex. french do refer to. We use the term "Skandinavien" or Scandinavia as a geografical term meaning the three kindoms of Sweden, Danmark and Norway. Some connect this to the mountainridge "Skanderna" or the Scandes. In other places the term Scandinavian more refers to the cultural connection of the scandinavian languages which includes Finland because in Finland there are two official languages: swedish and finnish, the latter not a scandinavian language. This language group consists of the five countries and dependencies I mentioned earlier as called the Nordic countries above. I also want to add and stress that in this region there are several other languages recognised as national languages for example languages of the Sami cultural sphere in the northen Norway, Sweden, Finland (and Russia).

tbf the US seem to have an extremely low bar for its military drills, and soldiers just seem to march however they want in parades (not like the US even holds parades on a regular basis). Marines and the guards at Arlington definitely have significantly sharper drill, but the rest probably can't even hold their rifles straight when presenting arms.

We Finns really suck at military ceremonies and traditions. We have the most boring uniform and by far the most boring drill. As a matter of fact Finland doesn't even hold any notable "changing of the guard" ceremonies. -from a Finnish Army reservist ps. I'm not disrespecting our military. A few differences. The Danes carry rifles that are locked and loaded with additional ammo in the classic ammunition pouch, with the Regiment dating to 1658, 2 years older than the British Grenadier guards. The Norwegians only date to 1856 but their drill is excellent, went on an exchange with them in the seventies. The Swedes look like they escaped from a third rate performance of a Strauss operetta and their drill is terrible.

But the Danish Royal Guards are mostly conscripts who only serve for a few months and then return to civilian life - so giving them loaded weapons........ In contrast the British Guards regiments are front line infantry with an outstanding military history behind them. A big difference is Finland and Denmark vs Norway and Sweeden. In Finland and Denmark the soldiers carry ammunition publicly with fully automated weapons. Most of the time before guard duty is spend on combat training, trench/survival skills, hand to hand combat and training for supporting police. They are all recruits but have important tasks such a being bodyguard for royals, generals, politicians and actively defending special operation areas like Army Intelligence HQ and so on. Norway and Sweden is not that different. They use recruits and they do have important guard duties. Sweden Guard will also be seen carry fully automatic weapons on certain duties. However, more time is spend on drill then Denmark and Finland. That means more time to look good, be fancy and perform ritual duties. This is not a bad thing, it takes a lot of discipline and training. The main difference comes from the situation in Finland and Denmark. Denmark has had a high terrorist threat level in the Capital ever since their operations in the middle east. This has lead to the Royal Guard taking on more military roles then before, facing out a lot of rituals. Instead focusing on the high active threat to royals, politicians, army and the capital. In Finland the threat has always been the east and the royal guard is an active military force in the full degree.

Norwegian guardsmen are light infantry first, guards second. The drill & music company seen in this video also have to finish basic training and function as infantery but not to the same extent as the guard companies. That’s exactly what it is. As for why they’re playing it that can be summed up in two words namely ” crowd pleasing”. Danish royal guard outdates the british I believe. Both danes and brits wore the bear skin hat as they were inspired by the old guard. There is no flower power over the danish uniforms, that used to be red until around the 1860s. Now they only wear the red uniforms at special occasions. Further more the danish guard was born in war to defend king and country.
