My uncle was the commando of NVA, he fought hard since 1972 and experienced the most difficult time of Vietnam history, he said he was drafted to walk a thousand miles to south,fighting until the unification and he still alive until this day and enjoy the peace, his suffering and dedication paid off, he was not the communist he just the kind and hilarious uncle of my family and respect the American soldiers tremendously due to their gallantry in the war. He told me it's the US government made the war happened not the Marines. By the way, to answer your question, Luke, it's highly unlikely that there are booby traps in Vietnam except the specific trap for the exhibition or in Cu Chi tunnel, all the booby traps was located when it were made during the war and then after the war ended, Vietnamese demolished all of them but the unexploded bomb is the huge problem, thousand people have died because of this and the Vietnam government still invest in destroying them.

There actually is a "horror" type game about Vietnam. It came out on PS2 (maybe other platforms, but that's what I played it on). It's called Shellshock: 'Nam 67. Features all the traps here, sneaky enemies, gore, etc. If I remember right, there's even a section of it that goes over what they call Hamburger Hill. Pretty much the Vietnam, ground version of D-Day.

The Vietnamese had special little sticks and rocks they put down to warn each other of the trap locations so that’s why they didn’t have so many casualties on their own traps. Mostly they had rocks and sticks as signs

There are several portions of the Geneva Conventions that the United States is not a signatory to. Notable examples: White Phosphorus and Cluster Munitions. It's not against the rules if we never agreed to follow them in the first place.

As a Vietnamese soldier who served for a short time in a mine detector unit on the border region (nearby the ho chi minh trail) and currently a armorer. The spike trap are mostly clear nowaday since they are mostly deploy near US base/active US zone so it was clear up pretty quickly,however mines and bomb still lay untouched near the hcm trail. On the note of exploding ammunition,i actually have a box of original sabatoge ammo in the armory i work at,still wanted to try shooting it from a mount but can't get the balls to consider writing a report of why a AK just suddenly explode.

My grandfather served in Vietnam as a member of the U.S Navy some of the stories he’s told me and my family are haunting. He was nearly killed twice, once when the ship he was stationed on was bombed which made him lose nearly all of his hearing and second when a piece of shrapnel from a grenade went off to his left and nearly took off his arm.

Hey chap, got an uncle who is a u.s. marine that served in nam. 2 weeks in stepped on a mine and was severely injured at the age of 18. Since then his friends call him Lieutenant four toe. Since he currently only has four toes. Great guy! Still to this day has shrapnel surfacing from on his face and other parts of the body. He finds them when his shaver catches there edge, ripping them out. Average 2-3 per year

If you've never seen the show, I watched Tour of Duty (80's show)a lot as a kid/teen and I loved it. Re-watched it a few years ago and it's still decent. Tells true stories and some inspired by real ones from the Vietnam war. Might not be able to review it, but worth a watch.

Lol, to be fair though I know that the actual VC tunnels are almost a tourist attraction nowadays though so I imagine that they got all of them or if not then atleeeeast like high 90s probably 95-99% of them. Doubt there are any 10ft tiger traps hanging in trees or snakes nailed to door haha but I would absolutely bet on there still being a some of the smaller punji pits or even some of those underwater traps... the whole war was just a chaotic slaughterhouse man I’m waaaaaaaaaaaay too happy to have not been a part of that war lol I suppose the war in the Middle East is extremely similar in a lot of regards but atleast people aren’t getting drafted to go out there

My dad fought in both Korea *in the Navy*. As an Aircraft Mechanic. The crew he worked on never had a plane they worked on fail. And was a WO as a gas and diesel mechanic. He told us of a couple of the things like the Junji sticks. They made them in various sizes and type of traps. Some like u said the size for a boot to go into to the size several people could fall into. He told us that they would make the sticks out of bambo and then fire harden them and then put them in human or animal waste like piss or crap or both. So u not only had to deal with the injury to the foot u had to deal with the infection from the stuff put on the sticks.

Keepsake, Lose hand - The German used similar tactic in WW1. They place bobby traps on interesting-looking daily items. They even rigged explosion on tilted wall picture/portrait/painting frame, knowing fully well how the some British officers would have the urge to correct that frame.

Victor Charles will also find Dad artillery rounds and mortar rounds. They would wire them up as a landmine. Can you imagine setting off under your foot 105 mm or 155 mm-high explosive round? Another cute little trick was when soldiers were untidy of disposing of their ration packs and the empty cans that go with C rations, Victor Charles with ty the can up in the tree with a hand grenade in it. The grenade would have the pin removed and there would be a tripwire attached to the branch the can was tied to the trip wire would cause the can to move releasing the grenade to fall out of the can, the arming lever fly off and go in off amongst the troops. They used to use our old car batteries to fire katusha rockets. You set the battery in a clearing where in the morning the sun will come up and warm it up. This will hopefully cause the battery to generate just enough power. You run your wire leads off the positive and negative terminals to the katusha rocket. The rocket itself was rudimentary aimed at the Target area and propped up with a forked stick. When the sun came up the rocket would fire when the battery warmed up enough. Meanwhile Victor is back in his rack haven't eaten in his bowl of rice and sleeping. They also made toe poppers and probably myriad of other things

Well....there is a way to recognize the trap by Vietnamese soldiers and other Việt civilians in the area, u must know the war favor the North more than the South, most of civilians in the North (even South sometime) have faith in North Vietnam so they support, and even help Vietcong creative trap or provide material to make one so that why very few Vietnamese (even civilian) injure by their own trap

You could react to the Tunnel rats videos. Infographics has a nice animated one. There is also the (2008) movie called "1968 Tunnel Rats." There are interviews of tunnel rats who survived Vietnam. Some have done a very large number of tunnel missions and became very good at it. The tunnels of Cu Chi are now an interactive museum of you should ever go to Vietnam and wish to explore the tunnels firsthand.

@Fer Morales -In World War 1 you joined late, German soldiers were already exhausted by 3 years of deadlock on the Western front, and most of the the Allied troops that repelled the German hundred day offensive weren't even Americans, most of them were British and French. -In WW2 the only reason your island hopping campaign resulted in a success, was because the Chinese and the British tied down millions of Japanese troops that could have been fighting the Americans, the majority of the Japanese army was fighting in China, if you had faced the full might of the Japanese military, your island hopping campaign would have been a costly disaster. -And really? You're going to bring up the Korean war? North Korean troops were extremely inexperienced, and the Chinese just went through a devastating civil war that killed millions of their people, yet you still got pushed all the way back to the 38th parallel, that's not something to be proud of, that's downright embarrassing. And honestly, I won't debunk your other arguments, because they prove my point not yours, it's funny how you are so proud that the mighty United States armed forces kicked the ass of third world countries, and it's funny how you said that the US beat the crap out of the Vietnamese in the Battle of Ia Drang, when the battle is known as "the battle that convinced Ho Chi Minh that he could win." Also half of the American force that landed in Ia Drang were killed, how's that for beating the crap out of the Vietnamese? And the Iraqis were using old tanks during the Gulf War, in fact nearly all of their equipment was old, so is it really a surprise that you mopped the floor with them? "You don't understand the simple fact that Third World bullets can kill you just as dead as First World ones do, do you?" All these physical traps hidden are obviously horrifying, but the fake planted bullets are so oddly uneasy to me. Like, if a vietcong soldiers hears that there MIGHT be faulty ammo flowing around, how does he have any faith in his gun? Whenever he has to shoot it, he's taking an admittedly small, but non zero chance it blows up. Just really seems demoralizing to not have faith in your equiptment

It's a little ironic that I was talking to someone about their, "Toe Poppers" and infamous, "Bouncing Bettys", about twenty minutes before catching this video. They didn't even make your list! Those two mines where designed to injure severly but not kill the target. Now it incapacites at least two more men to pull him. What do you think the rest of the platoon is thinking? Also, man to man, they were the toughest enemy the U.S. ever fought. The Navy Seals picked up on many of their tactics. Don't take my word for it. Look it up.

My grandpa fought in Vietnam. Im the only one he’s talked the most about Vietnam to. But that’s still not saying much. He had severe PTSD to the point that my dad woke up to my grandpa choking him in his sleep. He can’t even drive or go on planes as much. He still has a photo of him and his two best friends on his dining room table. He’s the only one in that photo that left Vietnam

By the way, because you are not aware of the Vietnam war, and you have seen all these modern wars with US involvement, normally US casualty is low, like 2, 3 or sthg, but back then in the Vietnam war, we do fight conventionally, and there were battleS that the US burnt 2000~3000 troops in a single battle (that not to mention the casualty of the coalition force)

Begin to make your way to treat the wounded only for your long time friend to disappear behind you, two steps to your right and three paces behind you, you turn around to find your friend who has vanished into thin air only to be replaced by the sound of screaming. Gutted and impaled you watch in horror as the contorted face of agony which was once your friend scream and wail calling for help that will never come, or crying out for a mother who isn’t there and the only thing that can be done is what’s best for him, as your eyes lock onto each other, gazes met you raise your pistol and set your friend free from his suffering.

Vietnam war was truly horrific, the stuff troops had to go threw is just insane. My grandpa is a Vietnam vet and he has told me some stories and its just sad. The tactics the Vietnamese would use is just crazy, one of the things they did is give kids hand grenades and told them to run to U.S. troops for help which is one of the reasons U.S. troops were called baby killers when they got home. U.S. soldiers was hated by lots of people when they came home from Vietnam which is just wrong.

The Vietnamese would also often monitor US radio frequencies and then an English-speaking Vietnamese would call in US artillery strike on US troops. It would quickly be stopped, but by the time it is discovered, there are already shells in the air... The "problem" was rather quickly solved for the most part, but it caused a lot of casualties with awful psychological effect - knowing you fired on friendlies.

Nearly every single one of these traps have been removed after the war, and not a single case of reported injuries came from these traps but rather from undetonated explosives, which is still a major threat and can sometimes be found quietly lying under our homes till this day and can explode any moment

The heavy body armor our troops wear now would actually cause more fatalities because now you have a fuck ton more weight pushing you down on those spikes and make it harder to get out of the way of something swinging down to hit you

According to History..com the geneva convention was refused by both Vietnam and the US in 1954 but the US agreed to abide by its rules. So I guess the rules of a document mean nothing if they didn't sign it and the US essentially agreed not to start shit, but finish it.

8:37 a couple of the COD games did that. Black Ops 1 is more of a brainwashing story but there were parts where you play in Vietnam conflicts and just the atmosphere is creepy. Black Ops Cold War did this to an extent as well since it took place right after Black Ops 1 (through flashbacks). I'd also say that Cold War's campaign is probably one of the best COD campaigns ever (been playing since COD4), but sadly it's short. World at War took place in WW2 but that game was pretty creepy all around. From the main menu music to missions in the campaign. I recall fighting Vietnam soldiers in one of the first missions and it had that horror element with booby traps like Vietnam did despite it being in WW2 era.

To this day my uncle won't talk about it even with me who served when I came of age. For the game idea , I think it'd be fun especially if the harder the difficulty the more traps there are. We had the superior firepower but not intelligence in that day. The U.S. bombed what they believed was a stale supply route when it was actually varied routes.

Not a video, but a hefty book if you’re up for a read. Look at “For the Common Defense: An American Military History from 1607 to 2012.” It’ll tell you everything about the big picture in every American conflict, and it will also cover some of the small picture as well. We used it in my American Military History course in college, very informative

Every area has a different code "password" only known by some special VC to avoid traps. Any VC that comes from another area or village needs to contact those "special" to lead them thru. And of course, the code was changed every week or day, it depends.
