Now imagine this. Aircraft are not subject to g-forces in the same way as the human body. If the superstructure could be reinforced to be able to handle 20 to 30 g's, especially with thrust vectoring and perhaps a mild redesign of the wings to allow for greater cornering, imagine what that could do in a dogfight. Of course, with laser weapon technology that may not even be a thing in the future.

While I completely understand the concern we also have to realize what George Washington told us in his farewell address: The most effectual means of preserving the peace is being prepared for war. If other nations think they can take down the US they will certainly try. We have to stay on top so that the greatest country which has ever been on the face of the Earth will not be overtaken by another power.

Alex Hollings put out a video on Sandboxx six days ago about the US Air Force is already putting AI piloted F-16s in the air and doing dogfighting against human pilots. You should react to his video on that. The title of the video is: The Air Force is pitting its AI-piloted F-16 against humans in 'complex dogfights'.

There are some other videos of it where you can see an empty F-16. In initial tests he AI won 2 5 round dog fights , 10 of 10 against an F16 combat instructor . Scary!

The AI is flying the plane, but there are pilots in the cockpit in case something goes wrong. The AI is fed 1000's of dogfights from history, simulations and live dogfights. A plane flown by an AI doesn't have to worry about limitations of a human in the cockpit. It could pull extreme measures and fly the plane to it's absolute limits because there is no human that will be damage or injured due to G-force. The same program can be used on any fighter aircraft, especially those which are being decommissioned. Imagined a F-35 being escorted by a pair of F-5's or f-16 or F-15's. Drones could do Wild weasel missions or attack mission in contested airspace.

i honestly dont see how this is surprising, basically just training an AI to be good at something specific which has been done in many video games before so its nothing new under the sun. As long as they put limits on the AI like "dont shoot unless given permission" then there is no problem

4:05 the VISTA F-16 is a dual seat F-16 test aircraft. It is used to simulate various other aircraft or new subsystem. For the AI test, it had a test pilot for emergency back and a data collection specialist flying in it, but the AI did all the flying.

@Anubis78250
@Anubis78250 Ай бұрын
For one I have to say there is no such thing as "AI" this is simply a program. VISTA is an F-16 that was developed with a unique flight system that allows it to simulate the flight characteristics of other aircraft. So say you want to do some flight training against an Su-27, but you don't have an Su-27. The Vista can be programmed to fly just like that other aircraft. It has both computerized and mechanical modifications that allow it to change it's capabilities to match whatever fighter you like. This means that it's flight systems are extensively computer controlled, and it's packed with testing equipment, making it the perfect candidate for testing and developing autonomous systems. It is piloted, but with the new upgrades it can now fly itself. It was used to develop systems for both the F-22 and F-35, and these latest upgrades are no doubt being used in development of NGAD systems. I don't fear "AI" because there is no such thing, what I fear is electronic hijacking. ANY network can be hacked, ANY weapon that is computerized can be turned against you.

I'm sure that the AI-controlled aircraft also had a live pilot in it who was ready to take control if the AI either lost control of the aircraft, or displayed drastically unsafe behavior. Those are both multi-million dollar aircraft, and DARPA would be sensibly reluctant to lose that sort of investment when having a monitoring pilot in the vehicle is so easy. Flip a switch, and the human is back in control of the aircraft.

They probably have real pilots in the plane , so the computer can learn through control interface via machine learning & then switch to computer controlled flight with manual override so a human pilot can be on overwatch when the AI flies. Personally if they get it to work it won't be long before you get some really scary aircraft designs. Because there would no need to limit designs for human tolerances.

It's terrifying. It reminds me of the movie Stealth (2005) with Jamie Foxx. I hope they have countermeasures or contingencies if it goes rogue. Even so, I want the AI to get as much data as possible on Ally crafts (all other vehicles and aircraft) every microsecond to ensure it does not shoot.

The Tomahawk Cruise Missile is a kamikaze plane…the Snark in the late 1950s was an autonomous plane and so was the V1…the only difference is these things come back to do it again and can learn from their mistakes…something I find scary is the small chips that integrate with living neural tissue cloned from mice…these have advantages of both living things and electronics…self organization and adaptation plus speed…they taught an electronic bio computer how to fly an aircraft…that concerns me more…such a thing could become creative. So could chips that mimic neurons but are electronic…using memristors…

Taking the view that AI is a threat of immediate extinction just builds on the same trope that was used regarding fission weapons. That fear dissuaded people from allowing real development of fission power, which kept us dependent on coal (greed wasn't a real factor, there), leading to a longer climate impact by a fuel that freely discharged more radioactive material into the atmosphere, than all the nuclear waste in the world, several times over. Activism accomplished these "good things", just as activists are preying on baseless fear to keep safe, re-plantable Golden Rice away from children deficient in vitamin A, ruthlessly ignoring that this leads to death and disability for many of them, plus all the other ravages of chronic malnutrition. The same goes for AI, because this isn't the world of War Games or The Terminator, and we aren't in a theater. An AI in an aircraft isn't going to wake up tomorrow and decide to go kill-crazy, that's a load of nonsense. Always remember this: malevolent intent in humans is driven by emotions, so unless an AI is developed that can feel emotions, it'll have no reason to have it at all. To have a Skynet AI, you'd literally have to design it to be hostile to humanity. Mary Shelly was a great SF author, but she wrote a work of horror, and Adam wasn't the real bad guy. Don't swallow the hype, it's Jonestown Koolaid.

I’m sorry to say it but humans won’t stand a chance in dog fight, at least not in one circle or two circle fights. The simple reason is an AI can pull more G’s than a human. You know the Chinese are working on stuff like this as well, so it imperative that US and its allies develop this first. And for all you guys painting pictures of Skynet in your heads this is not a general intelligence AI, it can only fly and fight not think. The thing to remember about AI is that "AI" just means that it is being piloted by a program that continuously uses previous data to predict the best next course of action based on trial and error. One of the biggest problems with UAV technology is radio lag, which limits how precise you can be with controls. Predators/Reapers can be piloted from miles away through satellite, but the input lag means that complex flight maneuvers like dodging enemy fire is impossible. Combine human targeting and fire approval with AI controlled steering and counter-measures means that you can take the pilot out of the jet without losing the fighting capabilities of the jet. The future of war will always be an attempt to automate as much of the dangerous killing as possible, while the people calling the shots sit safely in bunkers far behind the lines. The dangers of AI and fully automated weapons is the same as anti-personnel landmines or unexploded ordnance. If the target parameters were to malfunction, then war crimes are enabled. You can hold a unit responsible for committing a war crime, but you can't put a destroyed robot dog that had a brick of c4 stuck to it on trial.

The Collaborative Combat Aircraft program will need AIs that can handle dogfighting as well as bombing missions, so you must teach the AI combat skills…these disposable drones will carry the AIM-260 missile and act as “loyal wingmen” to crewed fighters and as stealth bombers…future pilots will be more mission managers than anything else…and yes, with the growth of things like ICBS…and Vigilant Warrior…we are building Skynet…no question

As scary as this is on the surface, I can see a future of this where AI faces off against AI which continually hones its skills until we have a small fleet of AI-controlled aircraft (which of course would need to have a manual override for safety reasons). Imagine 5th 6th generation aircraft with laser weapons communicating with each other which are AI controlled. That would be virtually unstoppable. That does seem apocalyptic on one hand, but so long as safety protocols are put in place which AI cannot override that could be a formidable force.
