Just to be clear, autonomous doesn't mean AI. It just means you can download a mission and from there it can operate with no further input required, but it surely can surface periodically for updates or to offload data or get a new mission.

About the propulsion system... I believe they're using a Magnetohydrodynamic Drive (MHD) which produces thrust with no moving parts using magnets and electricity. There are some interesting and informative videos made by other content creators like Plasma Channel and The Action Lab. I highly recommend watching one, maybe even try a reaction video of one of them. Love the vids, love the new business! Cheers! EDIT: Thanks for all the likes, that happened quick! Obviously I could be wrong. But is the military not usually about a decade ahead of the public in terms of new technologies? MHD's work, they are a proven concept. It's just a matter of coming up with the right materials so that oxidation and wear doesn't happen as quickly. In the details that were released about this UUV they talk about it operating so quietly that enemy sonar systems can't pick it up.
@Garuthius

MHD is a long way from being functional just yet, but I for one am excited with the developments in the field.

@Garuthius Tell that to the channels that make them and use them on their sites. Tell that to the US Military and DARPA, who are always about 10 years ahead of the public in tech. I mean... Over $4 billion per year from DARPA and over $120 billion per year from the US Military in research and development will do that 🤷

@@RealRichRay OK let me rephrase..... aside from pushing a few litres of water around a loop and a couple of balloons etc .... When 'I' say 'Functional' ... I mean to the scale of pushing 200,000 metric tonnes of steel through a body of water in excess of 30 knots.... WHEN it reaches that level of functionality, you will have the kind of necessary thrust to weight ratio for it to be scaled down, and implemented into 'Micro' and 'Pico' scale projects..... MHD is a long way from that..... BUT as I said, I am excited about the technology and it's developments, and I do watch all kind of science / developmental / experimental channels, I also read scientific white papers etc... I am not interested in propagandist / conspiracy nonsense that is spread around about what DARPA are doing or could be doing or should be doing. The point is nobody knows... so until we see it being announced .... to all intents and purposes, it doesn't exist.

Imagine being china and having 30-50 Orca's off your coastline and each on has enough firepower to sink 3 destroyers. All waiting patiently underwater, no surfacing. Like having underwater SAM sites but for ships and enemy subs. Like smarter underwater mines, that see the enemy and attack them when signaled. Also each Orca only cost about 120 million versus 4.5 Billion of a Virginia class attack submarine. You could buy 38 Orcas for the price of 1 attack sub.

I actually love both of those can designs, the green is fantastic. Why not just have those be the two sides of the same can? Also, with the news of aliens supposedly in our ocean, really makes you wonder what these autonomous subs are secretly going to be used for. Convenient timing to have unmanned recon subs, don't you think?

The only way to contact a sub when it's underwater is with ELF ( extreme long frequency) which is 7 to 12 bits per second so messages would take a long time to send anything sizable. So the message sent is mostly and order to come up to antenna depth and get message.

There is a channel called Megaprojects that made a video about this ~4 months ago about the Manta Ray, and they go into a bit of logical speculation about what this thing will be asked to do initially and how it can perform its tasks autonomously. Appreciate the content and hope you have a good day.

is it just me or does this platform not actually sound too impressive? when it first went into development it might have seemed like science fiction but with how fast AI chips have developed and with drones navigating and identifying targets all on their own in Ukraine already, this doesn't actually sound like too large of a leap forward - the technology pretty much exists already: inertial navigation, self-contained AI systems, automatic target-identification...all these systems are already in use today - rather than anything new it just combines advances in different fields and technologies..still impressive, but not a giant leap

I think considering that a catastrophic failure on a submarine historically, almost always leads to the crew dying, having unmanned subs doing even half of the heavy lifting, patrolling, combat , firing missiles etc.. that's got to be a win-win right?

On the autonomous bit, that could be a good thing. They can't be "disrupted" like devices that use radio waves. I'm guessing they can be controlled, but are designed to go autonomous and hit depths you'd have trouble communicating with.

The wings of the manta ray suggest a propulsion method. As it submerged, it would glide forward just like the gliders in the air. But even better, it would glide forward as it surfaces, too. It could undulate up and down in the water repeatedly to pick up speed. Imagine how quiet that would be.

Inertial navigation is a tried-and-true method of underwater navigation used for many decades and quite accurate. Sub's periodically may stick up a mast to get a quick sat fix to correct any errors, then continue on. Very little of the ocean floor has accurate mapping, so I'm not sure contour matching would be that reliable like for missiles. It's doubtful the Manta Ray uses AIP for propulsion being so small. I would think the Ray has fairly neutral buoyancy and uses mostly control surfaces to set depth but likely also has some capability to change buoyancy, especially for resting on the bottom. Pushing water from ballast takes quite a bit of air pressure and there's not a lot of room to hold air flasks. I suppose it could also use an electric pump powered by the battery.

6:41 - Even Sharks attack the cables off and on and when they do, they tend to make headlines in the news. Especially if its a larger 'pipeline'. As for Autonomy, the US Air force is already testing an AI piloted F-16. They currently have it manned during test flights and the pilots take it up into the sky and enable to AI for a few minutes to see what it'd do in different situations and scenarios. There was a tanker drone that successfully refueled another jet mid flight. The B-21 Raider is capable of being fully autonomously flown for missions. The US Air Force will most likely heavily go towards a fully autonomous/AI air force in the (near? distant?) future.

Ive always thought about the concept of having a water wheel generator connected to ships/submarines where they use the current of the water to convert it into electricity.
@Garuthius
@Garuthius 20 күн бұрын
Not good for a manned sub, too much power requirement to sustain the crew needs for food, water, air etc etc etc, besides, they have nuclear reactors for power which last 25 years operationally, but 50 years at a push. they only need to surface for food and to change crew. A UUV however could utilize a hydro-turbine generator to harness tidal forces to keep itself charged whilst anchored at the bottom of the sea / ocean in low power mode, this would be able to sustain itself indefinitely. Program those puppies to surface and touch base for new commands with the control centre on a predefined schedule, and you could have a veritable mechanical army sitting at the bottom of the ocean waiting to be called into service.

Not until the world comes up with a workable solution for batteries with 4 - 6 times the energy density of Lithium-Ion.... These things would work great for pre planned "missions" of known duration followed by RTB for recharge (or replace battery pack).... but for the moment, that level of AI controlled autonomy is out of the question... and boom devices only work if you have no friendlies in the water. It would have to run on AI as you have no viable means of high speed data communication with the UUV once it launches... and given that sonar works on identifying the sound profile that matches a known entity, and sonar is 'pretty much' all you are going to be able to fit onto that dinky bathtub toy that runs on batteries.... having them as scout's for submarines on long duration missions is not (at this point in time) feasible.

Honestly if I was the Navy and was trying to figure a way to weaponize this given our level of technology, they would literally be able to network and relay real time data so accurately that I'd arm all these with concussive force speakers and disrupt all sonar. Having a wireless underwater data Network that's mobile would allow us to deprive other people of sonar and no longer be reliant upon it... Until any country caught up or neutralize this they would be rendered blind. Even if we couldn't do it entirely, we could have these floating around our subs giving them a much larger profile and hiding within it

If they travelled in pod's like dolphins, that would work quite well if they are all pinging in unison. You could have sold that idea to the US military... too late now, you already put it out there. LOL

There is a better video on KZbin about the manta ray.. it's also capable of recharging itself... it also goes into more of its capabilites

My problem is the military is pushing manless craft. We have the most advanced military. If enemy countries figure out a way to hack those manless craft we loose our power over night.

there is no chance - these platforms don't necessarily need to communicate with anyone - a chip can be self contained and is virtually unhackable, you program an algorithm into the chip and the chip controls the system, learns from sensors, adapts, all contained within itself like a laptop that's not hooked up to the internet..how can you ever access the chip remotely? you can also use quantum computing-based chips that only have one-time encryption at any point in time through quantum entanglement, linking of particles that are spatially dispersed - if that becomes hackable then fuck it, you lost the goddamn war..you discovered something a solution to the insoluble, Einstein would have called you god

@johnkirk1772 what if someone is able to input their own code where they are manufactured. Granted highly unlikely but a thought. Or major improvements in E warfare are able to disable advanced drones in an area.

@@Marlax-101 good points - but if the enemy has those capabilities in terms of electronic warfare, you either adapt and overcome or you lose.. it's just another dimension of modern warfare, a system that can shut down the advanced computing in an autonomous unit should not have any difficulties shutting down other advanced processors in man-handled platforms like the F-35..

@@johnkirk1772 mostly would just worry about people being able to find ways to turn them against their own. individual pilots can make choices but automated drones just follow code. at least keep them supplementary for a while and not the primary aircraft.

Another great reaction! A day or two ago The Military Channel did another one of those 7 reasons why the American military will make you run back to the comfort of your mommy videos. I never heard of most of the seven things.
