You just gave me a new idea to go over my old guns from rti… and work on it! Your hobby is amazing And I don’t think you are destroying the history of the gun, just a really nice way to bring back the glory for this old guns

Thank you for sharing this, I have a degree from SDI on gunsmithing, but many of these techniques for older guns are not gone into in depth, and at this point I have done about 15 guns as a hobby, but it was good to see your techniques on refurbishing old guns... In those 15 only one was made after about 1980...

Thanks so much, an old technique that’s for sure but one of the best!

Sorry to hear that dude. I wish SDI was exposed long ago before thousands wasted their money. I feel like someone should look into viability of a class action suit to get everyone their money back.

While breakclean is awesome for cleanup its sooo abrasive. Small brass wirewheel rotary tool and max strength alcahol gets it done. Just a tip from a guy who likes the same hobby.

You must have it good with R.T.I. because I've been burned by them in so many ways, and trying to talk or deal with customer service is so horrible, I gave up. They had one lady , now gone, and the new lady very hard to talk too. So I gave up, and will never buy / order from them ever. I even deleted they web site/app.

@@V8SKULLS before my sponsorship deal with them all 30+ guns I’ve bought from them I’ve had little to no issue, they’ve been excellent and so thankful to be able to get some of these historic guns for so cheap. Obviously they’re in super rough condition but that’s what makes these restorations so rewarding! Sorry to hear that though

Your videos are 👍. Can I do any sanding on the stock after I already put BLO on it? Or should I strip it again first?

So I tried this method of bluing. Only experience before was with the Belgian blue from Arts Gun & Sport Shop. For your method I made the same mixture with the only difference was for the Hydrochloric Acid I measured it by weight cause I didn't have that same measuring tube. I would get the water to where it was steamy hot (Not Boiling) and would have vapor coming from the water. I would apply the mixture torch it then peroxide. I tested with a small machined block that I had as a test piece. I just put it in the pot inside the water. On the first attempt it was brown. Second attempt it turned dull grey. Then third a dark dull grey. Now on my 5-6th attempt it hasn't changed. am I doing this right and need to keep going?

Are you using distilled water? And I do a rolling boil
@Prest0n97
@Prest0n97 6 күн бұрын
@@Surplus_Restoration yes I used distilled. I think I need to let the parts dwell more before putting them in the boil. I’ll make sure I get it to a rolling boil. For people who do this I hope they also do test pieces.

Greast videos, I've been watching them all in the past few days. I have a question though: I tried this rust bluing process on the buttplate of my M44 Mosin and for the life of me I could'nt make it to turn black. The metal gets a golden hue and just a slight coat of rust that doesn't turn black and just falls off... I have no clue why this happens... I did the same proceudre on a Gewehr scrap buttplate and the bluing came out decent, not perfect but at least is black and not golden/reddish... any input would be appreciated if you know the answer

Butt plate may be aluminium, if so it wont rust blue
@Phage26
@Phage26 2 ай бұрын
@@bigd1558 i have thought of that but no, it's definitely steel, it weighs a ton and just got a slight coat of "blue" to stick to it today. it won't blue evenly tho, and the edges are still white and with that ugly golden hue. I'll sandblast it and try again on bare metal... It's not even a problem with oil/grease since I left it in a bath of acetone for several minutes and then blasted with the brake cleaner just to be sure. Today I blued two spare barrel bands I had lying around (where the bluing was missing on most of it) and they turned out just fine after 3 coats, I might add another one at a later moment to make it evenly black since the new bluing is just a tad lighter in color than the original Swiss one. Antoher try I'm going to make is trying cold bluing on the buttplate (just out of curiosity) and see if that blackens it
