You've lumped the Companion in with the Varsity and other Royal machines of this size, but it's worth noting and many of the features absent from the Varsity are present on that machine. Touch control (under the hood) ribbon color selector, margin release key, paper scale, all there. It's even got couple of sassy gloss black stripes like the upscale Smith-Coronas have. I think you might like it!

This was my first typewriter that I obtained! My machine is from 1939 and does have the paper scale in front of the platen. I agree with you about the feel of the typing experience, I wouldn't adjust anything even if I had the option to. The keys feel just right for a typewriter. It has been an interesting journey since last October and I'm proud to own one of these little machines.

Hi Joe! What a cutie. I do find it interesting how, when switching between machines can get funny from different keyboards, or key layouts which to be fair doesn't drift too far apart, but placement of some keys or their location does. And I experienced this difference when I had been using my 1964 Smith Corona Galaxie Deluxe for a good solid month, then my birthday came and was gifted a 1959 Hermes 3000 and I found my left pinky wanting to hit something on the Corona, apologies, I can't recall what it was I'd hit, and then on the Hermes its the q lol... I'd have to get both machines out together and see what it is I was using on the SCMGD that isn't on the H3K. And then when you have to go back to the keyboard of a computer it can feel somewhat alien when have been on typewriters for a while. It looks like an ultra portable, which I don't have yet, I say yet because a budy of mine in CA is sending me a olivetti lettera 25. It belonged in his mother's collection and she passed and since he knew I knew her and I too collect typewriters he asked if I wanted it, I said I'll definitely give it a good home. More on that when it arrives. I was so excited to try out my Hermes 3000 that I only cleaned though thoroughly, the type bars, its a Pica like I've never seen before. Very precise... that's a fair word for it. Very clean. I plan to take it a bit more apart and clean and re-apply lubricant, get it fully cleaned up, also picked up some new feet for it, as the original has dried up to feel like hard plastic. The undeniable Hallmark of just sitting in one place for far too long untiuched. Royal Varsity, very cool, thank you for sharing.

Your thorough review of the 1938 Royal Varsity typewriter was insightful and engaging. Your passion for typewriters inspires us all. Keep up the great work!

It would be interesting to compare varsity with Olivetti MP1 or Invicta from the same time. I see that in some parts and solutions they are very similar. It's interesting whether it was some cooperation or copying in design process.

Superb review of that machine. Having never seen one in oerson, it was neat to get such a thorough review with comparisons. Thank you, sir.

Thank you for the review. I did not know about this line as well. I took out my 1947 Royal QDL for size and look comparison. I think this Varsity has nailed a design that was later used for the 1940s QDL until it was again redesigned in the early 1950s. Daniel

I had this typewriter. Very heavy but strong.

What a lovely little Royal portable! I saw a Royal Varsity at goodwill with a series of accent keys for Spanish, French, and Portuguese. It was really neat but far too expensive of an investment.

I like the royal I don’t have one yet but I like the 1920-40s generation of typewriters and I plan on getting one someday

I have been collecting typewriters lately especially at estate sales; what do you think about ebay? To much of a risk? I don't mind fixing some.
@Joe_VanCleave6 ай бұрын
The biggest risk I feel is the machine not being properly packed and getting damaged in shipment.
