For the finale of his five-night residency, which was the first of its kind to take place at the Royal Albert Hall, Simon Green aka Bonobo invited the Hall’s Associate Artist and acclaimed organist Anna Lapwood to join him in the show’s finale ‘Otomo’ (co-produced by O’Flynn).
In an act of near complete spontaneity and coincidence, the two met whilst Anna rehearsed in the building late at night after Simon’s fourth event at the venue. Fast forward 18 hours and the two were performing live together in a truly spine-tingling collaboration.

Pipe organs should be used in this sort of music more often, they add SO much gravitas. They're also the original synth... why not use it? How many people who listen to this type of music would say that they listen to organ music? However, here we are listening to organ music. Organs, in their many forms as classical organs such as what we see here, theatre organs like the Wurlitzer at Blackpool Tower Ballroom, and electronic instruments such as Hammonds etc fit into almost any genre of music, and have proven that over the past 100+ years. The organ is not just for use at church or for funerals, it is a diverse instrument that is full of potential, musically, expressively and emotionally. It needs more chances like this one.

Organs were designed to replace a whole orchestra and choir. They are the single greatest feat of musical engineering of their time and we’ve never quite again built anything to this scale in the physical world; we have digital instruments of similar size, but everything on an organ of this kind is a physical instrument powered by air. I love these instruments so much. They are sadly slowly dying out. Being thrown away and scrapped.
@blahfasel2000
@blahfasel2000 Жыл бұрын
Well, sort of. The organ in its current form is only about 20 years old, although some of the pipes are 150 years old. First it was extensively rebuilt and modified (eg. changing the voicing of existing stops, adding 35 additional stops, all the inner workings were completely replaced, etc.) in 1924 and 1933. In 1970 some more changes were made. By 2000 the organ had deteriorated to the point of basically becoming unplayable. Then from 2002 to 2004 another full rebuild was done. This last rebuild tried to keep the sound mostly the same, but improved the inner workings, probably for the first time in its history bringing the wind supply to a level where the organ could really be fully used.

I think a full pipe organ in a music hall is the singly most powerful and impactful and emotional instrument ever created. Doesn't matter how loud you turn up the speakers to play synth bass music, it won't feel more powerful than a pipe organ. I can only imagine what it was like to be in that room for this performance.

This song feels like finding a full jungle in a desert. The Classical Organ mixing with the technologic sounds of EDM, holds a power no one has thought enough of to try. This is a song made to challenge the ideals of a mass with the power of two opposing forces. This song is a Masterpiece, it holds a magic we all need.

Good for the composers: the alternation between acoustic and digital! The silences of the organ then its support by looped chords, the progressive effects to go towards a final in crescendo... Wow! And when she's not playing, Anna counts the bars, her whole body is connected to the crowd, the organ, the musicians... Finally! The organ has spoken! On the last note, with the cromhorns, he says: "WELCOME!" Thank you especially to Anna for having undertaken this wonderful adventure: allowing all young people to appreciate the extraordinary potential of these instruments which support the past, participate in the present and prepare for the future... And a big congratulations to Bonobo. Creative and responsive! Thank you so much!
