Royal Caribbean Drink Package Review

If you are considering buying Royal Caribbean's unlimited alcohol package, here is the important information you need to know about if buying a drink package is worth it or not.

The package was so worth the first time I used it. Me and my wife are wine drinkers. And usually a glass of wine is 6 oz. which is not much. Me and my wife will have a glass or two for lunch and dinner along with a mix drink or two in between. Add in bottled water and coffee the package definitely is worth it for us.

I love the drink package. I love the peace of mind that comes with the drink package that I've already paid off my drinks prior to even cruising. Another benefit, if you like expensive drinks or expensive wines or whiskey, the drink package is a substantial discount on those as well. So say your wine by the glass is a pricey one, and its 22 dollars per glass. Use your drink package to bring that price down to 10 dollars. Same with an expensive cognac or scotch. Take 12 dollars off the cost of that drink as well. Same with those ever so tempting light up cups. Want a light up cup drink? Use your deluxe package to reduce the cost of that drink by 12 dollars. Much more enticing of an offer then. Not to mention the discount you get on wines by the bottle (if you're so inclined to wines). Most RCL ships have amazing wine cellars and you can use the discount on bottles to your advantage. Also with the drink package, dont think all of your drinks have to be alcoholic. The margin between the non alcoholic beverage package, and the deluxe beverage package is about 2.5-3 alcoholic beverages. Think about the tasty lattes, the fresh squeezed OJ, even a mocktail, the soda, etc. All non alcoholic options that are available to you still on the Deluxe package so you dont get that drink fatigue. Have your tasty coffee. Have your fresh squeezed juice. You dont need to head to the bar immediately upon embarkation (though a sail away beverage is a good idea). In the afternoon enjoy your soda, bottled water, and maybe one cocktail poolside. Then in the evening, have that glass of wine or cocktail with dinner. Have that cocktail or beer with the evening show. And if you're really feeling froggy, enjoy a nitecap at the club. Try that strangely named blue beverage that you've never heard of. Its OK to not like it, you have the deluxe package. Dont like the drink, no guilt! That's only 3-4 alcoholic beverages throughout a day on vacation. You dont need to drink on par with your fraternity days to get the most out of the deluxe package.

I'm only 3 cruises in on Oasis class ships. That being said, on my first cruise the package was totally worth it. That did include a stop in Haiti where the beach bars accepted it. However on my second I started to experience that "Drink Fatigue" you mentioned. So I had doubts about ever getting it again. But on my third, it kinda saved my wallet as we went on a couple of benders with people we met on the ship. So now I really see it as insurance. Sometimes you may not need it. But it will definitely save you some money should the party bug strike and you decide having a drink on every deck with a bar is a good idea. (Pro tip, that was a blast.)

Pretty simple. If you are someone that has 5+ drinks/day, go for it. Money, very well spent. It doesnt take long to have a few beers during the day, glass of wine or two with supper, and a couple drinks at night during shows! Only downside I could see would be pre paying, then getting sick for various reasons and not using. I have a feeling RC might accomodate such an occurance. Bottom line, for me, it has been a HUGE benefit. Too many reasons to name them all!

I don’t like the fact that the other adult I’m the same stateroom has to purchase the drink package I travel with my family my wife and our 4 kids I drink but she only drink occasionally now that mean my $400 drink package just turned into an $800 drink package just so I can drink freely so unfair in my opinion I’ve already paid for the cruise I don’t wanna spend $800 on drinks alone

I highly recommend in this case, having your wife register in the kids stateroom. That way you're the only adult in your stateroom, thus not needing to pay for the beverage package for her since she's in another stateroom. It doesnt mean she doesnt get to stay with you in your stateroom, just when booking the reservation, put her in the kids room. Problem solved!

That would work if we stayed in 2 different rooms we often get a family stateroom that sleeps 6 so we all can be in the same room but thanks for the advise

I totally agree. RC is punishing the honest customers who would not think of scamming the system. My cabin mate in my upcoming cruise does not drink, so does not want the drink package. It does not make sense.

@@patriciaroane4913 9 times out of 10, if your partner/travel mate calls RC before the cruise starts, he/she can state due to personal/ethical/health reasons, they do not drink alcohol. RC most times will either exempt that traveler or charge for just a soda package. My son-in-law doesn't drink alcohol but his wife loves her wine. He called RC and only had to pay the Soda Package and only had to pay 1/2 price due to a BOGO special that popped up 2 weeks before the cruise started. Like the video states, RC is willing to work with non-drinkers regarding the package.

@@shawnferrell1983 Since your wife with be one of the 'guardians' with the children, call RC and see if she can be 'exempt' from the rule. Like the video states, RC is more than willing to work with non-drinking cruisers in the same cabin as drinking cruisers. It might be that they will exempt her or only require her to purchase a Soda beverage package. My son-in-law doesn't drink but his wife loves her wine. When they cruise he usually only is required to buy the soda package after he calls RC. And a lot of times only pays half price when a BOGO special pops up before their cruise date.

I have purchased one for upcoming Harmony OTS sailing. What he did not mention (and I am pretty sure it is the case) is that there is also a max drink/day. 12 or 13 a day maximum. Now I know people will say you almost have to be an alcoholic to get that many in. I disagree. When you are on deck on sailing days and those frozen drinks go by you can easily do 2-3 over a 90 degree 3 hour period. The wife is a beer drinker and they just seem to evaporate. So even with the package note that there is a maximum drink per day limit, so unlike dining if you don't like the appetizers, you can put it to the side and order 2 more off the menu, the drink you buy comes off the total for the day. So drink what you like, tip your bartender for heavy pour(and because once they know you, you are set for the rest of the cruise, and it is the "right" thing to do, like any server, the tips mean a lot). I will update in September and weigh n on the value from my humble opinion. Also note this package used to be called Unlimited drink package, no longer unlimited

Kevin, I believe the 12 or 13 refers to the max individual drink value (excluding gratuity), so if you order a drink valued above the max you will be billed for this amount. With the Delux package you can drink to your hearts content.

The RCL deluxe drink package is an absolute amazing product. Yes, it seems like a BIG outlay but, think about it, how many premium coffee and non alcoholic are you going have ? Never mind a wine or two at dinner or a cold beer with lunch!! We have done 20 cruise's and have experimented with No package and with a package, mind you we are not massive drinkers BUT we do enjoy a good night out and will sink a few. End game is that the Deluxe drink package cost ALWAYS has come in cheaper in all circumstances than buy as go. On our next cruise the package cost us $807 each for the 14 days and I am sure by day 6 We will for sure have spent that much, therefor the next 8 days are cream. Deluxe drink package on the Anthem was great because Starbucks coffee was included since there's no actual Starbucks like on Oasis class ships and Johnny Rockets milkshakes are eligible WITHOUT any other purchase since it's a la carte. No need to bring bottled water nor soda cans with you since you can get those on-ship with the beverage package.

Just cruised 4 weeks ago on Harmony of the Seas... we bought our deluxe drink packages well before sailing, but I wanted to mention that once we were onboard, they had a day 1 special of buy one package, get the second person 50% off... (at $70/day)... so the cheaper pre-cruise price we paid was pretty much the same price if bought then.

Another thing to remember when adding up drinks: soda, bottled water, coffee, etc also is included in deluxe package. So it's not just the alcohol. Nice when we are on cruise to not worry about having to pay for any of these things at the end of the cruise.

Me too. Still, with the specialty juice and coffee I can usually break even at 4 or 5 drinks. My experience, always get it before hand on RCI web site. From multiple cruises, I have got it for al low as $41/day(one time trans-Atlantic 16 days) but usually at 46 or 47 bucks.

You will pay the 18% gratuity on both the drink package or pay as you go. Key point Matt, drinks are expensive at any high end restaurant or hotel or similar venue. RCI cruises are definitely high end....love em. You can’t compare the prices to getting a beer at the local VFW bar or buying from a grocery store.

My favorite part of the beverage package is the budgeting aspect. When we went on our first cruise I thought "I'll definitely get my moneys worth"...I didn't...doing a similar cruise this fall and we purchased the beverage package again for two reasons. We are going with others we know and think we'll be out and about more. It's also easier for me to just pay in advance and not think about it on the ship.

I have looked at the deluxe pkg and the refreshment pkg over and over and over again for an upcoming November cruise. It is a repositioning cruise, therefore 2 weeks long. There is no way either package would work without experiencing TOTAL drink fatigue. I think it is a ridiculous amount of money to charge one person. And as far as a tool for budgeting, again it’s ridiculous and a waste of money that can be put to better use for the very expensive excursions or your next vacation. You want to budget? Have two to three drinks a day, which is plenty for most people and you will still be way under the cost of a package. Heck, throw in a couple of specialty coffees or sodas and you will still be under the packages cost.

We got lucky and got the $18 deal when it was mistakenly loaded for our 14 night trans-Atlantic for November 2020. This cost us $300 for the cruise, which is still more than we’d usually spend, but my mother drinks speciality coffee (I don’t drink coffee) and it includes smoothies and juices (which I do drink). At the usual $60/day cost, it would have converted to around $1500 NZD and would have been a no go 🙅‍♀️

I’m a diamond plus member so the drink package doesn’t really work for me my wife and my parents. Diamond members and above get the free drinks at the lounge every day from 430pm to 8pm. Plus during that time you can go to any bar and each member is allowed to get 3 addition drinks and we all get 3 beers each and bring them back to the room to have during the next day. Then while we are at a stop at port we will drink on the island then come back on ship right before the free drinks start at the lounge. We still buy drinks randomly during the day at the pool or at night at dinner or a show but at the end of the cruise we will save hundreds and hundreds of dollars by not doing the drink package. So really it all depends on if you are a diamond or higher member and also depends on how many ports you stop at

For my crew, the merit of the deluxe package comes from not only the alcohol-based drinks but the other ones as well. In particular, we'll all start the day off with espressos/lattes/cappuccino coffees in the morning that are covered, and several of the family also go for those fruit smoothies at the Spa. While these are not as expensive as a cocktail, they do add into the equation.... Definitely be on the lookout, however, for sales on this package for your sailing....

Yes, virgin drinks are mocktails. Any frozen drink that doesn't include alcohol. Virgin pina coladas, daiquiris, et al.

The reason my husband and I decided to purchase our drink package was because we were going to purchase the higher non-alcoholic package already, for about $26 per person per day. The price we could get for the premium package with alcohol was on sale for $44 when we purchased. For $22 more a day we could drink whatever we wanted. That’s less than 2 alcoholic drinks and was very worth it for us, knowing we were already going to spend the money on the non-alcoholic package.

Just got off of the Harmony. Drink prices are ridiculous. I seriously think they are making prices so high to make passengers feel that it would be worth it next time. 2 pina coladas on Coco Cay was $30. I brought my 2 bottles of wine, so I was good for the week. I do not drink soda, so the refreshment package doesn’t make sense either. My husband drinks, but no way was he going to drink $800. Heading back to NCL with the free drink package. I know it is not really free, but it is a couple hundred versus $800. Our loyalty to RCCL is not worth what it used to be.

I was able to try a bunch of different shots. Two drinks at lunch, two drinks at dinner, fancy coffee in the morning, a few sodas, and a drink or two after dinner and not hard to reach the break even point. You also dont feel like I have to finish this one drink as you can just get another.

In my case, not really. The diamond drinks in the evening are great (because they are complimentary) but it's a limited menu of drinks. Drink package offers a much greater variety.

You're right. Unfortunately that rule is in place because when it wasn't in place, too many guests were sharing drink package benefits with those that did not have a drink package.

We are looking at the Delux drink package for our upcoming trip on Harmony of the Seas. My wife and I made a quick estimate of what we would "normally" drink per day between us (i.e.2 lattes/cappuc ea. , 2 glasses of wine ea, 2 bottled H2O ea, 2 Cocktails ea, some juice, etc). Surprisingly this landed at about $150/day ($900 for the trip). This includes the gratuities. It looks like the break even discount for the package based on our estimate for the above is +30% discount. RC is currently running the buy 1 get 2nd 50% off (i.e. 25% discount). Our cruise is still a couple of months out. Does RC typically offer 30% or better discounts on Delux Beverage packages?

Hi Matt, tks for this video! My friends and I decided that Drink Pack is not worthy because: during the day we will be out of the ship + we will drink only at night to get drunk (with 3 or 4 drinks it's enough) + we will get on board our own alcohol (permitted wine) + it is super expensive to pay usd 78+tax x day! + we will be leaving the ship early, two night before it ends. Did you call RC about their other beverage packages? My son-in-law has found that the Soda beverage package works for him since he loves his Diet Coke and it's usually about $3 a visit at the soda machines... He fills his cup about 10 times a day. The soda package runs around $8/day plus gratuity from what he's found...however a couple times he got a 1/2 price deal so he jokes that RC lost money on him..LOL

I am fit active person, I get so drunk every NIGHT (not day) on my 7-day cruises. I will stick with Norwegian's free at sea and it is TRULY unlimited and you could get multiple drinks at a time. I am not on a budget but carnival's drink package was not worth it, 15 drinks a day and you must wait 5 min in between each drink in the crowded bars, this royal Carribean doesn't seem much better. Just stick with Norwegian.

I just got off Symphony of the Seas last week. I had the refreshment package because I don't drink alcohol that much. The refreshment package was worth it to me because we ordered about 2-3 specialty coffees a day, fresh juices and smoothies and plenty of virgin drinks and bottled water. I only purchased about 3 drinks with alcohol during the whole 7 days. Plus we brought 2 bottles of wine onboard.

The discount is based on "on-board prices" which they do not publish, but you have discovered it by reverse engineer from the known discount (i.e. 25%). So currently for your cruise the on-board price is ~$69. The "regular price" or better known as online price is $56. Again, all discounts will be based on the "on-board price.

Joshua I recently used this deal in June. I was told sometimes Royal would offer 10 drinks for $75 on day 4 or 5 on a 7 day cruise or more. So I jumped at the offer and saved quite a bit overall for the duration of my cruise.

How is the cost fixed if you still have to pay gratuity? Everything is a scam in the US. Even in regular stores you have no idea what things cost. If something is advertised for 10 dollars, the amount what the customer should pay is 10 dollars.

When you buy the drink package, a service fee is added that covers gratuity. Thus, when you order a drink with a drink package, no additional cost or gratuity is needed.

@@RoyalCaribbeanBlog Oh. I must've completely misunderstood it. I thought in one of your previous videos you said you still have to pay for gratuity for each drink if you have the package. But if everything is included in the package then I must apologize for my idiocy. I was mistaken. But still in normal stores in the US the price you see is not the price you pay and I think it's false advertising.

The amounts are always higher because sales tax is not included in the sticker price.

I’m a diamond plus member so the drink package doesn’t really work for me my wife and my parents. Diamond members and above get the free drinks at the lounge every day from 430pm to 8pm. Plus during that time you can go to any bar and each member is allowed to get 3 addition drinks and we all get 3 beers each and bring them back to the room to have during the next day. Then while we are at a stop at port we will drink on the island then come back on ship right before the free drinks start at the lounge. We still buy drinks randomly during the day at the pool or at night at dinner or a show but at the end of the cruise we will save hundreds and hundreds of dollars by not doing the drink package. So really it all depends on if you are a diamond or higher member and also depends on how many ports you stop at
