The inner legs look surprisingly exposed. And what a colossal beast of a horse it must have taken to put and armored Henry in the saddle!

The open inner leg is because if it were closed the main arteries in the groin would be stressed also for the horse, closed would have been awful.

I actually own a close helmet from this time period 1550’s and it’s got a lot of hits and dents in it. The helmet had so much use in jousting the visor was replaced back in the period. This armor here was never used in a tournament.
@edfieber1484
@edfieber1484 22 күн бұрын
You may be mistaken. Every part was renewed and repaired after a battle. Whether it was armor or a sword. That's why some of them still look so good even though they were in use.
@craigthescott5074
@craigthescott5074 22 күн бұрын
@ contact marks can be fixed and some parts replaced that get damaged but the armorer will still show use. I suppose most marks could be pounded out and buffed but small areas of metal would be gouged out so marks would show up if it was heavily used. It probably depends on how fancy the armor was, my helmet was a working helmet no engraving or decoration.
@edfieber1484
@edfieber1484 22 күн бұрын
@@craigthescott5074 Yes, you are right. In any case, congratulations if you have a real helmet, that's really something special. I collect things like that too ! With certificates we are on the sure side as there is much fake on the market ! I just wanted to say, a dented helmet does not necessarily mean an original and a good condition does not mean a fake.

Back then it took serious guts to fight in a war. No machine gun shooting bullets from a protected area. And if you were pinned-down or injured, they'd just dispatch you with a sword-thrust to the gut. Not many prisoners of war back then.

It’s neither of those things, it’d be made to fit the wearer and the weight is distributed across the whole body. Henry VIII’s weight gain over his life is why we have so many surviving suits of armour, his body changed size so quickly that the old suits were obsolete just as quickly as

@@1aikane Oh absolutely, but it's better to be less mobile & agile than be vulnerable to arrows and swords etc. But I would say armor isn't quite as restrictive as people often think, they are made to fit a certain body so they are more comfortable than they may look. And they weight a lot, but it's spread over your whole body. A modern machine gunner kit may weight the same as a set of plate armor would, so in comparison it isn't that crazy
