#BuiltByTheHimalayas | How Did the Himalayan Evolve | Royal Enfield Ride Pure Podcast
“Since the whole adventure category has evolved be it the riders, their way of riding and the terrain they go through then of course the motorcycle also needs to evolve.” - Anand Raj, Product Strategy Lead, Royal Enfield.
Episode 2 of the Royal Enfield pure podcast features Anand Raj, aka Andy, whose journey with the Himalayan in India started back in his college days when he was told to build a motorcycle for touring the Himalayas. We discuss how Andy and his team understood challenges of the riders and how the constantly changing terrain has helped them build the all-new Himalayan 450.

“You don’t ride a spec sheet". What an amazing statement. I have watched dozens of videos on the 450 recently and a lot on the original Himalayan over the last year. Most were technical and ride impression or features. But this podcast, wow, the story about WHY. Best discussion about why the bike is what it is. I have been riding and racing for 60 years. I have lots of motorcycles. I currently have a YamahaTenere 1200 and a Tenere T7. For years I have been moving down in size, horsepower and weight. I recently bought a Kawasaki KDX300 DS. It is like riding a bicycle, light, maneuverable, not intimidating. I bike you don’t even have to think about when you ride. I took test ride last year on the Himalayan and thought, simple bike, nice to ride, very comfortable but more capable versatile than the KLX. In September this year I did a 15 day tour of the Himalayas on the Himalayan and was struck by what a simple basic tool it was and that it always got the job done without fail. Not flashy, not the ultimate, but never intimidating. I came away from that trip with a completely different appreciation of that motorcycle and maybe a better understanding of what I was really looking for in a motorcycle. This podcast, the story of why and the journey to get there, further cemented my impression that Royal Enfield really understands riders and brings a motorcycle to reflect them, not a bunch of product people and engineers creating some flash product and convincing you that you must have it. I will buy the 450 when it gets to the US and I am sure it will be that next step in my riding pleasure. I would also like to add to your list of criteria, one that I never hear. Adventure riding is off road, you will crash at some point, perhaps often. The most intimidating thing for me in thinking about a ride is picking the bike up after the inevitable crash. I can’t pick up either of my Yamahas and therefore I am feel limited on where I can explore and riding alone. The Himalayan I can pick up ( that 15 day trip) and I appreciate that as much as any technology or feature. Thanks for this in-depth look into the “why” and the connection to the customer. Thank oyu Anand for your talent and dedication

So apt. I've been owing the Himalayan for last two years. There is a charm when you're riding this bike. Whenever I've gone to any trip to any part of the Himalayas the bike just shines, so comfortable and so tractable, no flashy stuff, less technical stuffs. The bike will go on and on and on...

I had my gripes on the 15 day ride; neutral I could never find, not so great front brake. However, the security I felt was surprising. You count hit anything and the bike going. How at 18,000 feet that 23 hp kept pulling that bike was truly impressive. Most underrated/underappreciated bike I know of. @@worklada9533

Well said. Long story short you summed up the reasons for which I have regrets about a recent purchase getting back into motorcycling and starting adventure riding. I should have gone with my gut over other things and chose the Himalayan 411 over what I got. I just don't get that full feeling I expect when riding that transcends all the specs and bells and whistles that certain motorcycles may have. The Himalayan both old and new embody that experience I am looking for and I anxiously await the 450 here in the US as well.

I agree. I bought an Himalayan 411 after testriding so many different bikes. It is simple and really tough. I agree to the dropping part. Even the Himalayan with luggage, camping gear, photo gear, winter gear is very difficult to pick up after the inevitable dtop I had in the Kinnaur, Lahaul, Spiti, Langza, Chandratal circuit. Will end up.with a disc proplapse. 450 has more power, great flat torque curve. I wish it was 30 kgs lighter !!

It's still 30 kilos too heavy. I mean come on. I love the old Himalayan, but dropping it ALWAYS feels like a real concern cause of its weight. A sincere request for the future. You've blown my mind with this new one, but the bike could do with some dieting.

It’s possible to drop a few kgs if the swingarm was aluminium but steel is more sturdy. They have already made engine a stress member.

@@shirish1812you can mod this motorcycle to reduce weight. Such as remove saree guard, central stand and back rack. Also u can keep the fuel to half tank which could reduce the weight by 8kgs.

Two questions from Italy. Are you going to discontinue the “old Hymalaian”? Why didn’t you expect the Hymalaian to be a successful motorcycle outside of India? One comment from my side. I’d be very disappointed if the current model will be discontinued

It’s exactly what I feared and what makes me angry. After 7 years, the motorcycle I purchased is already going out of production. This will, of course, lead to a drop in used prices. I think it was a mistake to buy it, and for this reason, I don’t plan to purchase the new model but rather a competing model that has a longer lifespan.

If you listen to the other podcast, he mentioned that the original Himalayan was meant to be only for the Himalayas and the Indian market because it was designed with a limited scope and also because it was meant to be a test for the new engine that's the basis for the new lineup of bikes. They didn't consider the requirements of the international markets at all during the design phase and the international RE dealers basically led a strong effort to force RE to sell the Himalayan so that they can offer it to buyers.
