I love watching these rehearsals. Such a sweet window into the sweat and perseverance required to create an artistic performance that appears to be effortless. For folks like me, who will probably never get to see a performance of the royal ballet, these sessions are priceless.

Agree! I think Leanne Benjamin is being far too hands on in this rehearsal. The pair never got a full run through of the piece. A very different style from Darcy Bussell's rehearsals.

Also agree. I appreciate that the role of the 'rehearser' in this is to pass on the RB version but Mayara is herself a great interpreter of roles. There should be some respect for her own side of the process. Tutor needs to leave some space for this. Perhaps why RB interpretations these days are on the flat side?

Disrespectful to the creative process? I find these complaints exaggerated and a tad silly, to be honest. Mayara was not rehearsing but actually learning the role for her debut. They even brought in a notator to make sure the choreography was being reproduced faithfully, so how can the coaches be anything but precise about steps and musicality? Of course there's room for interpretation, but the dancer has to have mastered the steps first.

I remember watching the Prix de Lausanne 2011 when Mayara Magri won a scholarship to the RB, and the Audience Prize. Her classical variation was Swanhilda Act 1 where she tries to communicate with the doll in the window of Dr C's workshop.

Fabulous watching artists work. And the choreologist? When will Royal Ballet revive the Ballet of the Nuns -- or a complete Act 3 -- from 'Robert le diable'? The original choreography was contemporaneously recorded by August Bournonville; it's the origin of Giselle and all Romantic ballet. The recent ROH 'Robert' was a misguided travesty. (see: Robert Le Diable: The Ballet of the Nuns, Anne Hutchinson Guest, 1997.)

I’m not exactly sure, but in my understanding, each of the coaches have played the respective part before, so they know their part well enough to coach it. I don’t think one of the coaches would know the other part well enough to coach that one.
