Darcey Bussell, Yasmine Naghdi and Charlotte MacMillan, interviewed by Kristen McNally, discuss Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet, followed by an audience question and answer session. The conversation ranges from the ballet of Romeo and Juliet as a whole, performing and coaching the role of Juliet, MacMillan's legacy and influence and wider discussions of ballet as an art form. This Zoom event was produced in partnership with Coutts.
Kenneth MacMillan’s passionate and nuanced choreography for Romeo and Juliet shows The Royal Ballet at its dramatic finest. The dancers playing the star-crossed lovers of the title have a wealth of opportunity for powerful interpretation, not least in the celebrated pas de deux. Around them, the whole Company creates the colour and action of Renaissance Verona, where a busy market bursts into sword fighting and a family feud leads to tragedy for the Montagues and Capulets. Prokofiev’s beautiful score sweeps this dramatic ballet towards its inevitable, emotional end.
In 1965, MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet was given its premiere at Covent Garden by The Royal Ballet and was an immediate success: the first night was met with rapturous applause, which lasted for 40 minutes, and an incredible 43 curtain calls. The title roles were danced by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, although the ballet had been created on Christopher Gable and Lynn Seymour. It has been performed by The Royal Ballet more than four hundred times since, as well as touring the world, and has become a true classic of the 20th-century ballet repertory.

Thanks to the Royal Ballet for this wonderful and enlightening panel! After watching your streamed broadcast of Romeo and Juliet about 7-8 times in a row, each time noticing new details in Sir MacMillan’s choreography, in the interpretation and being each time moved to tears, I was yearning for more. I do not have enough praises for Yasmine Naghdi and Matthew Ball - as well indeed for the whole cast. As Charlotte MacMillan rightly says, nothing beats a live performance in the theatre (I have been very fortunate to watch Romeo and Juliet performed here in Taipei by the Royal Ballet just a few years ago). But a streamed broadcast provides close-ups of the artists, of the steps, and a different perspective, thus allowing us to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the performance.

Wonderful zoom discussion - so enlightening and informative - thank you all - especially as most of the bedroom pas de deux was included and an excerpt from Yasmine and Matthew’s rehearsal with Lynne Seymour - brilliant

It was such a great performance by everyone and the music is still in my head regularly. I'm very glad i changed my mind from almost not watching it as the too many times seen story made me hesitate to commit to the time. But i did and it became my favourite version of performance of it. Thankyou ROH!

Ms. MacMillan's observation was insightful. Why are great artists rare? Because great artists are absolutely obsessive about their work and absolutely willing to dispense with their work if it doesn't meet their standard. It is rare to find those two qualities in the same person.

I really enjoyed this topic of discussion. Thank you for this video, very interesting to listen to these women. I watched Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Opera House in 2015 and was mesmerized by the performance for days after. It is a piece which has marked me the most amongst all those I have seen in theatres. I work in Education and take my students through the study of Romeo and Juliet every year...so watching the play in this form of art was such a joy and treat!

Very interesting to hear Charlotte MacMillans remarks. Sorry, but i find Kristan McNallys annoying in the extreme. Unbearable.
