I live in the San Francisco Bay Area but decided on a whim during a recent business trip to go to a performance just a couple of weeks ago. Yasmine Naghdi stepped in to dance that evening as Natalia Osipova was ill and I was brought to tears with her stunning performance. We are so fortunate to be able to see such artists perform and this company, like my “home” company of SF Ballet, is an absolute treasure. Such an inspiring evening and the highlight of my trip to the UK, thank you Royal Ballet!!!

I remember when Steven McRae danced the prince. He was so brilliant, and now he is at the stage of a coach! The new stars are Matthew Ball and Mayara Magri. That is how ballet stardom goes! His solo of the tortured prince was memorable.

Prince Florimund? I was familiar with him as Prince Désiré. What's the source of this difference?

Sigh. It's not the fight between good and evil. I'm AMAZED that someone who works with this tale never looked into the meaning. In one sentence: It is the tale of a young girl who is psychologically paralyzed by her mother's fear of her defloration. The tale is FULL to the brim of sexual imagery, most prominently the SPINDLE (not spinning wheel, and certainly not knitting needles) through which the princess falls into sleep. Translation: She touches a penis and is mentally paralyzed. The FIRE falls asleep. The fairy that is not invited is sexuality. She is disregarded, nay, suppressed and she takes her revenge. Read the original tale again, now that you have the key. It is as obvious as the nose in your face.

In the original tale, she is raped several times by the prince while she is sleeping and she gives birth to his children while sleeping.

Do u think these themes are actually present in the ballet's story though

That might have been the original/one of the first versions of the story, but folktales evolve over time, as do the arts. By the time the Grimm brothers and Perrault wrote their version down, there was no mention of this aspect of sexuality and rape anymore. That's the version most people know nowadays, and the version this ballet was based on. I do think Sleeping Beauty in this version is a lovely story, and it works, if you see it as the battle between good and evil. We already have some rape-y ballets, no need for another one.
