My son and I spent about an hour analyzing this. Boy, that was a lot of fun! There is SO MUCH going on! What a performance! How many of you noticed... 1) the number of times the girl and the guy on the end hit the bells in front of them? Edit: It was 24. They had to take turns depending on which had a free right hand while taking a ukulele with the left hand. 2) that the middle two guys are playing the drums with their feet all the way through? 3) that they had to use four ukuleles for this (four colors of the little hand-clappers) 4) how thick the strings on the bass ukuleles were? 5) that the guy who rolled in was doing vocal bass, since the bass ukulele wasn't being played? Notice how long he sustains that deep note. Edit: Oops! It wasn't vocal. He was blowing into instruments like didgery doos! 6) how much physical stuff the guy next to the girl had to do? 7) that the girl's teeth twinkled at the end? Perfect special effect! Edit: 8) what the two guys in the middle are slapping that's hanging in front of their necks? It's silverware. Hey, I'd be interested in any discoveries other viewers have made. This whole thing was like analyzing a magician's act, only there's no sleight of hand or deception. It's all happening in plain sight (except for the drum playing). And it was a darn good song! Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to spend so long studying it. Edit: Oh, and what might be the most amazing but least noticeable part: It was one continuous video. No edits!

Fascinating observations! Sounds like something my long gone Daddy and I would have done! N one of the other video comments, someone said that their music teacher showed the class 1 of their videos then gave them the opportunity to replicate it! Even with time and instruments, they never came close. I bet they will never forget how much fun making music is and how much dedication music takes, even with unconventional instruments.

@Donny D Yep, the two guys on the right are doing it, too. If you look at what each person is doing during that part, it is completely symmetrical -- the left two are a mirror image of the right two. Like I said. There is SO much going on, here.

Really enjoy the song, but "most talented musicians?" You can learn to play a uke and a didgeridoo in a stoned afternoon. In fact, I'm pretty sure there is legislation saying you're only allowed to learn the didgeridoo high.

Jeffery Davis uh, they play multiple instruments, often at the same time. have you watched gianni's cover of drifting? that most definitely takes longer than a stoned afternoon to learn to play. as for the digeridoo, taylor plays piano
@jefferydavis732910 жыл бұрын
Blasto2x With the exception of people who just played in high school band or something like that, every musician I know, myself included, plays multiple instruments. If you make playing and performing a part of your life, it's almost hard to avoid learning a handful. I like their music, and yeah I've seen his cover of drifting. It's very cool how he organizes the piece on the instrument, but it's one of those things that looks much harder than it is, especially to people who don't play, or don't play well. It's actually precisely the type of thing that I, or one of my friends, would learn on a stoned afternoon.

What I love most about your videos is that you guys understand how to keep the ball in the air. There's something new and interesting happening just often enough to reward continued attention despite the repetition necessary in songs. So few content creators understands this, whether they are amateur KZbinrs or big time Disney execs. Video has a heartbeat and if you want your video to really keep people engaged and happy.... you keep that god damned ball in the air.

I just realized that Sarah and Marshall were trading off hitting the hands and hitting the bells. They had the hardest parts I believe.
@StianF9 жыл бұрын
+Kelly Stout They sure did. However I did notice that Marshall hit the wrong last bell every time in the first half. Like, at 1:13 he was supposed to hit the orange instead of the red. He hits the red correctly at 2:58 and it suddenly has a completely different sound. I'm not gonna watch it again for the bell, but I don't think Marshall hit a single orange bell xD he hit red instead every time. Anyway, no hate from me. I support the decision to re-record the audio to make it perfect. No doubt they have the skills to do it live, but it would've never sounded this perfect if they did.
@brendanwang2809 жыл бұрын
+Kelly Stout But similarly, giannis and the tall guy had to do the forks on their knifes, tap on the ukelele, and do the bassdrum and crash, so I think the jobs are distributed pretty well
@StianF9 жыл бұрын
+King of Khaos Close to the end of the song, at 2:50 or so, Marshall and Sarah "switch places". What I mean by that is that Sarah usually plays the first bell at the start of the chorus, but after 2:50, that's Marshalls job. This means they have to change the 'pattern' they are pressing the bell. Marshall does not. He plays the same pattern no matter what. Like I said in the original comment, listen to Marshall's bell at 1:13, then immediately listen to Marshall's bell at 2:58. He hits the same bell, but with completely different sound. It is obvious that Marshall and Sarah have the same set of bells, and that Marshall hit the wrong bell every time before the switch at 2:50. Again, as I said, I'm not hating. I love to see that they're human and can make mistakes, and I have no doubt they can actually do it live. But it isn't. Which I also approve of. Love them!

Joel's part is definitely the hardest.. between the kick drum rhythm, the utensils, the bass uke and the regular uke he's got the most on his plate

@MrLegalJonny10 жыл бұрын
They use some of the ambient sound from the take, but you can't tell me if it's not pre-recorded that they overdubbed certain parts of it for crisp sound. I have watched it many times and I am still not sure how they did it. I have a feeling they pre-recorded, they added in certain things from the live, and they made sure the video hit every note in the song (an impressive feat on its own.)
@batistajericho42819 жыл бұрын
+MLJonny Let me rephrase my self 1 year later: The whole video was shot with no ''cuts or edits'' meaning everything is choreographed, it took several takes (watch behind the scenes). One mistake and they have to do everything again. They even did a mistake at 2:32 with the hands. The Audio was taking from the video were they played live like i said. The could have ''sharpened'' but some extra effects, mix the souds so it sounds better. Nothing to the extend to what you usually do in a music video. But the it was not pre-recorded.

I made a comment on the original post for this video (Us version). On there I said that did like the song and was trying to find what everyone else liked about it. I don't know what you did, but this changed my opinion from not liking the song, to a true addict. What you guys are doing is amazing, and I'm pretty sure I will still be watching this and loving wote till I'm 60 :D You guys rock and I don't want you to ever stop, no matter what anyone says.
