Is this the True Face of King Tut? Facial Reconstructions & History Revealed | Royalty Now

What did King Tut really look like? This is the question that has fascinated archaeologists since his tomb's discovery in 1922. Today, we'll explore what we know about Tutankhamun's time as Pharaoh, his tomb and riches, and of course his maladies and what he looked like.

King Tut only reigned for 9 or 10 years, beginning at the age of 8 or 9. He likely relied heavily on his advisors. He married his half sister, and we know their entire family suffered from pretty severe inbreeding.
Tut was found to have suffered from Malaria - in fact, more than one strain of Malaria. Before a cure was found in the 1900s, Malaria could be very fatal. He would have been really uncomfortable in his final days.
But Tut’s actual killer was more innocuous - his body shows evidence of a sudden leg fracture, possibly from a fall. The broken bone in his left foot had festered, and alongside the malaria, proved fatal to the 19-year old. This then contradicts the story that he was helpless and crippled - he must have at least been active enough in his final days to have gotten injured.
But then, in reliefs, Tut is sometimes shown sitting instead of standing for certain activities like Hunting. So it’s just hard to tell the severity of his conditions.
Unfortunately, there is a lot we may never truly know about Tut - his mummy was simply too damaged and his time in history too shrouded in mystery.
So, what do we know about how he would have looked in real life?
We know that he stood about 5’6”, and was fairly skinny. Professor Hutan Ashrafian says that he would have had an overbite with buckteeth, and been relatively frail. We know that at the time of burial, he had a shaved head.
Most scholars agree that the images of King Tut made by his own people, during his own lifetime, are what we should be looking towards for accuracy. Zahi Hawass thinks Tut’s burial mask is probably the best representation of him. It’s been noted that reconstructing directly from a mummy just isn’t reasonable or accurate, since mummy tissue shrinks by around 50%.
Professor Salima Ikram told LiveScience: "I think that he looked as he was represented, except that he had more of an overbite,"
We don’t have a ton of images of King Tut, just because of how short his reign was, but they all look remarkably consistent. I’m going to use his famous burial mask as well as the effigy of him found in the tomb as reference. This small effigy was made to represent him as a child, and it shows him emerging from a lotus flower, symbolizing regeneration.
We don’t know the exact skin tone or eye color of Tutankhamun. It’s been noted from his genome and skeleton that he can be considered North African. Now of course in the modern day, North Africans represent a huge range of skin tones and hair textures. I’ve tried to stick closely to what the sculpture represents, a tan reddish tone. Just know this is only one possibility.

Back in 1987 I was fortunate enough to visit Egypt with a friend, and we were able to go into Tut’s tomb - a memorable occasion! On top of that, my friend’s father-in-law was a friend of Howard Carter’s, and actually involved in the discovery of the King’s final resting place.

I saw a traveling exhibition about King Tut back in 2018 and it blew my mind how new the objects looked despite their age, especially since I’ve known and read about him since I was five. Great recreation! It's documented that Tut and his wife really loved each other and deeply mourned the loss of their children. It's comforting, to me, to know that he wasn't a child in power used as a pawn his whole life, that he actually had a family and love. His wife was also his sister but that wasn't uncommon in ancient Egypt. She disappeared from records after his death and they have not found her mummy so it's unknown what became of her.

This is fantastic. Thank you for the background information regarding his physicality. I have had a deep interest in the Ancient Egyptian civilization since I was in my early 20’s. I am now 73, and only recently my DNA indicated that among my Italian/Sicilian/Greek DNA, way, way back I have a smidgeon of DNA from North Africa, which didn’t surprise me. The Egyptian exhibit is coming to San Francisco, and I am so lucky to be going to see it with a group from my retirement neighborhood. Your recreation of Tut was stunning! Yes, there is profound androgyny to his features; put a black pageboy wig on him and you likely have a person even more beautiful than Cleopatra was reputed to be!

I gobble up everything about this family since I was young. Everyone was studying WWII in high school and doing reports on it and I was studying the Akhenaten era and wrote a report on Nefertiti, "The Beautiful Lady Comes". I still draw pictures of Akhenaten and Nefertiti and Tut and Ankhesnamun. Why is the world so fascinated by them? I think numerous factors besides his splendid tomb. I feel I knew them in another life. Akhenaten's enigmatic face has always fascinated me, even more than Nefertiti's iconic image. When I got to see Tuts golden mask up close and personal it was mind-blowing.

Something about your images just make him seem so much more HUMAN, perhaps it's just the motion but he comes across as a person, not just an image. I was fourteen when I first met King Tut, his parents and his lovely and sweet wife. Am I writing as though I actually knew these people? Well, the book that I read, and I'm sorry that I don't recall the title or the author's name, but it was so well written that this girl child felt that I knew the characters first hand. I read the book around 1964-65, and I believe it was a recent publication. And I have searched for it off and on over the decades. Still, it left such an impact on me. Earlier I had read another fictional book about Hatshepsut and the intrigue of her Court life. She became my Female Idle. It was during this time that I wanted to forget anything about school and dive into learning about Egypt. And I did learn as much as I could from the books supplied to a small town country school's library. Years later I found more books in the college library, and as I had decent jobs that had nothing to do with my love for the Ancients, I occasionally bought books and learned more. A visit to an exhibit in one of the Atlanta, Georgia's museums in the early part of this century made it possible to see portions of those items from King Tut's burial chamber. An experience I would love to relive. During that same visit, another museum had a life size display of the sandstone Chinese soldiers found buried in an ancient grave. I was so excited that weekend. I was in my early sixties, but felt the excitement of a child at Christmas. Thanks for sharing this video. I did enjoy it.

I love the history you put into your videos. His life, the poor thing, was so sad. Then to see the recreation in the end, amazing work. To me it makes them so personable and relatable as a living person instead of some statue, painting or mummy (in his case). Well done again!

I think it's accurate because this depiction looks a lot like the way artists depicted him in his lifetime. Artist in ancient times that didn't take certain liberties depicted images of kings and queens and noblemen accurately because they didn't have photography so they did what they had to

No they didn't the artist of the time depicted highly idolised art of their ki gs. A lot of Pharoes had physical disabilities.

This is not the amazing thing. The most amazing thing is how talented the Egyptians were.. when you look at his Golden bust/mask, you can see his face, how well they have made it in Gold. That is true talent.
