Fantastic! I've read many descriptions of young Henry as attractive but could never envision how he might truly have appeared, given the poor quality early portraiture and the bloated beast he evolved into in later portraits, regardless of how flattering Holbein attempted to make him appear. This bridges that gap and I will use this image to put a face to the history when reading about him. I'm sure this would be terribly difficult, but I would like to see one more progression added to this. Henry at end stage, when he had nearly no hair left, or what was there was nearly colorless (with no hat) and was very ill, in chronic pain, vicious and evil, but still ruling. I've seen a few representations of him at this stage, but they're akin to his early potraits, difficult to discern what he really looked like.
@BobUikder-ig4uq7 ай бұрын
It’s amazing how far behind England was compared continental Europe when it comes to portraiture. Until Holbein, we have nothing but poor quality and low skilled few and far between portraits. The early Tudor period shows how far behind England was when it comes to art. Compared to the renaissance art in Italy, it’s a shame because I’d love to see better portraits

To be honest even with all the weight he’d put on his smile transformed his face and you can still see his handsome looks. It’s a shame his personality and temperament changed so terribly, he would have still been attractive if he’d looked after himself better. But his behaviour ruined everything for him, how cruel he became made him unattractive. I’m just glad he was so good to Ann of Cleave she was stunning and not at all ugly by today’s standards. But sadly that’s how it is, certain looks go out of favour quickly and even back then you had to tick so many boxes to be considered beautiful enough for marriage.

This is perhaps my favorite of all your shared recreations. Like many, I have been fascinated by Henry, all his wives and his children, since I first read about Anne Boleyn potentially having an extra finger. True? I don't know. I was not yet ten years old and believed it. I've read every biography and history I could get my hands on and yet have never quite been able to picture Henry as described, not based on the existing portraits. Watching your video brought tears to my eyes. It feels like a mystery has been revealed. Thank you for this, and thank you for the incredible work you do.
@Cheerfultoday7 ай бұрын
Anne Boleyn didn’t have an extra finger. An overzealous, exiled Catholic man, who was possibly trying to get himself taken back into the Pope’s, or someone else high up in the Church, good graces. Certainly, it was Anne Boleyn who Henry VIII was in love with to the point where he turned his back on his own Catholicism and his own soul to get. She was such a dud as a wife because she didn’t give him his male heir, not that she didn’t try, so Henry continued playing God, and had her beheaded. The exiled man did his best to paint her in the worst possible light because of her own, evil part in her marriage. And that’s how her eleven fingers rumor began.

I feel like the first portrait of him by Hans Holbein in 1536 looks exactly like previous portraits we've seen - even the one back when he was 18! You can tell in each portrait that he has a protruding nose bridge and small pinched mouth. I find that fascinating. So even if they did "copy" the face from portrait to portrait, by the time we got to Hans Holbein who painted more realistically, we can see the faces of Henry's earlier portraits are still pretty similar IMO. Through thin-hard shadows, Henry is the very first thing in that portrait (almost like a selfie), and everything else is behind him. But the Henry as a youth is painted into the room he’s he’s in through the use of softer shadows. 😲

Claire's rendition of Anne is probably my favorite depiction of her. She's ambitious, sharp-tongued, and waspish, yes, but she's a loving mother, witty, dignified, and sympathetic, too. She feels the closest to how I think the real Anne Boleyn was out of all of the depictions of her.

@@monmothma3358 she's brilliant. To play Anne Boleyn SO believably and then to play Elizabeth ll with just as much skill is IMPRESSIVE!

Your videos and work are simply perfection! I love it. Could you bring back to life the Romanov sisters? Greetings from Poland ❤

Seeing the recreations made me realise what a fantastic choice Damien Lewis was. There have been some bad choices over the years but that one? That was good. I love the smiles on the recreations. It adds a real touch, smiles would have been not uncommon for members of the court.
