We had a great time this week diving into the research on Jane Seymour and her son, Edward VI. Jane is an (admittedly) overlooked wife for me, but I really enjoyed making this video and recreations.
Jane Seymour is one of Henry VIII’s most enigmatic wives. Despite being the one to give birth to a son, Henry’s greatest desire, she died not long after the birth. We know very little about her - lost to history are her personal thoughts, motivations, and feelings.
Henry’s choice of Jane Seymour as his next Queen puzzled the Tudor court. Jane was from a family whose ties to English royalty reached far back, but the Seymour’s had recently fallen on harder times.
Jane was entirely different from her predecessor, Anne Boleyn. Where Anne was hot tempered, Jane was demure and obedient. Where Anne was witty and charming, Jane was hardly educated and quiet. But these very qualities might have been what attracted King Henry to her in the first place - they represented a return to peace, and to the status quo.
In addition to few portraits, we also have very few descriptions of Jane from her own time. This is what we know:
Jane was considered quite plain, even for the standards of the time. She was 27 when she married the King, old by Tudor standards, with very fair skin, dark blue or grey eyes, and was a medium height.
Ambassador Chapuys wrote that she was of “no great beauty”, and Sir John Russell remarked that she needed a lot of adornment, like fine fabrics and jewelry, to shine, whereas her predecessor Anne Boleyn needed very little.
However, as we know, her unassuming appearance and demeanor helped her greatly in her marriage to the king.

Just to make it clear, it wasn't the queens struggling to give Henry the heir, it's the strength of the Y chromosome of the man that determines if it's a boy or girl. In other words, he was struggling to give himself an heir, killing his queens because of his own failure. I know most people know this, but for the women in this story, I think it's important to point out 😊🍀✨💕

Yes. And Henry had Anne killed so he could be with Jane. So both Ann and Jane were adultrors, along with Henry. So Jane Seymour was no virtuous woman.

The safest thing she can actually do if she didn't want to be an adulteress is to stay out of court but I'm pretty sure her family won't like having their chips unused.

Can we just take a moment to thank Hans Holbien for his amazing works of this time. His portraits truly bring the Tudors to life, and give you such an idea what his subjects were like. The eyes have so much behind them and I am thankful you can use them for your recreations.

It's interesting how Jane looks so plain in Tudor clothing, but when she's put into modern styles she looks quite lovely! They're a much more flattering look on her, I think. Also, it's sweet to see how much Edward resembled his mother. He at least got to see a little bit of his mother live every time he looked in the mirror.

Also, the kid who played Edward in Becoming Elizabeth (who was an amazing actor and stole every scene he was in) looks uncannily similar to your recreation of him. The casting directors really knocked it out of the park with him and Mary.

Interesting that Edward is probably the biggest reason England is Protestant. Henry VIII started the split from Rome but was never really committed to Protestantism, unlike Edward. It would take Mary all her effort trying to take the country back to Catholicism, ultimately failing. Then Elizabeth's moderate Protestantism normalized it for the future. No wonder they're seen as the most important dynasty. The way someone's personality and desires can shape a country is fascinating.

Edwards bent towards reforming the country was strict, as was Mary's reversal back to Catholicism. Elizabeth did the best job of knowing her audience. In order to rule, she needed the majority acceptance as a woman. So she danced a line between the religions because if she pressed too hard against the Catholics, Mary Queen of Scott's supporters could have swayed more people to subplant Elizabeth. She really was the master of PR, by declaring herself "married to England" she was able to keep her power and gain support in an almost Joan of Arc devotion to country. Instead of the shrewd determination not to pass her power onto a spouse. She learned that from watching her sister Mary.

​@@reluctantfangirl1621 Oliver stole the show in every scene he was in, which is impressive considering he was only thirteen during filming and was acting against some VERY seasoned professionals from both stage and screen. I hope he gets more roles, because he very much deserves them! Also, Romola Garai as Mary I in the show is THE best depiction of her that I've ever seen. Maternal, zealous, paranoid, loving, fiery, headstrong- they captured every facet of Mary's personality and her complex relationships with her siblings so well and Romola brought such fire and heart to every scene she was in.

Thank you for another fascinating episode. It's all perception of course, but Jane appears much more attractive as a modern woman, whereas Edward was more attractive in his era. The history of the royals is filled with so many "what if" scenarios. What if Henry's first son had survived? What if Henry hadn't been injured in that jousting event? What if Edward hadn't contracted measles? What if his father figure had been Catholic and Mary had become queen? What if Elizabeth had met an honorable man who changed her mind about men in general? Nothing but one twist of fate after another.

I read a book once theorising that the rush to get married and the long break between the wedding and becoming pregnant could be due to jane being pregnant before they wed. It also lines up with henry patting Jane's stomach when mary arrived once "forgiven" by henry. He also quotes very soon after the wedding he wished he hadnt acted in such haste to marry once looking at young courtiers

There is definitely other accounts that Jane taunted Anne with the gifts that Henry was giving her. I think some confuse her plain appearance for innocence. Anne did try to refuse Henry since she witnessed what it was like to be a royal mistress from Henry's treatment of her sister Mary. There is no such evidence that Jane ever refused the kings attentions.

We should also remember that portraits of royalty tended to present their subjects in the best manner possible. I have seen a realistic drawing of Henry VIII in more than one book where he doesn't look like the Henry VIII as painted by Holbein.

I always love your videos and especially love European history (although it wasn't my forte in school)...your recreations at the end, showing us what these people may have looked like now, are so interesting and much appreciated. I think Jane was actually beautiful in her "modern" recreation. And I can totally see modern Edward as a regular kid in prep school. The bottom line is, they are all just like us to some degree. Different times and circumstances, clearly, but regular folks at their cores nonetheless.
