one of my favourite details in misao is the female protag. going through the game, your female protag is muuuch more resilient and accepting of all of the terrors of the school as compared to the male protag. she's cheerful in the worst situations and violent. there's even a detail of your main character losing her contact, only to show a brief character portrait of one of her eyes suddenly being red. when she finds her contact and pops it back in, both of her eyes are brown again. in a titular part of the game, you must decide to kill a character- if you are playing as a male, your character chickens out before being briefly possessed by the spirit of your female counterpart. all of this implies that the female protag herself is some sort of demonic figure. love misao.

Another thing I really like about IB's doll scene is that, before seeing it from Garry's perspective, you see it from Ib and Mary's, where they see them as cute plush animals while Garry is calling them creepy, and you don't understand why he does until you see it from *his* perspective. It's really clever, cause a kid likely wouldn't find those dolls super creepy, but an adult CERTAINLY would. Plays on the childhood fears thing the rest of the game has and flips it on its head. That part of the game is definitely the most memorable to me. :) I love RPG Maker, so seeing videos like this about them is nice, and I find it interesting that most of the popular ones are horror or horror-adjacent games.

Mad Father, The Witch's House and Ib are all the ones I remember the most growing up. I'm pretty sure I also remember some vague things about Misao, OFF and a few other at the time popular RPG Maker Horror games. I'm just happy that the previously mentioned Mad Father, Witch's House and Ib all have remakes available for modern hardware and also on console. Both Mary and Viola didn't deserve the fates they were given. Mary gets burned alive while Viola gets shot by her father and if you know what I'm talking about without actually spoiling the games they came from then pat yourself on the back for remembering the tragic twists that came from these games.

Nice to see Witch's House getting brought up here! It's the first RPG Horror Maker Game that I actually remember hearing about and the twists and turns within the game have left me shocked to this day. Just using a trope like they did in the game brought such a horrifying twist to the idea that made the ending unforgettable. Granted justice for Viola is something I do think is only something fans can do which I understand as I respect the creators intent with the story and wouldn't wanna force them to include an ending they were not happy with.

God seeing Ao Oni unlocked this memory. that game was definitely popular outside English communities, there was even a huge fanmade hetalia version that became its own thing popular in both English and Japanese fandom. I played OFF, and yeah, that was a REALLY good game. I'm personally mixed on certain aspects of the story, as far as I understand them. It's pretty abstract near the end, and generally have grown a lot more jaded to the direction I've seen it taken after thinking on Undertale long enough. I respect it, but generally it leaves me in a mixed bag, but at least by the time the game gives you the choice to change course, well, there is literally no reason to. It's more an illusion of choice than anything, one is just far faster and in a sense more humane. An odd game, but playing to that odd quality is what really defines good RPG Maker games and the games sharing the roots.

I wish I saw Palette ever being talked about. I found it on JayIsGames when I was a kid and it took me years to remember it even existed. It might not qualify as horror to some, but at the very least it's an atmospheric mystery game with a story that unfolds in a heavily non-linear order. Did anyone here ever play Palette? Please tell me someone remembers it. B.D.? Sianos B. Sian? Everything red and white? The broken-glass sound effect? Only having exactly enough energy to get to the next clue, provided you remember which way to go? The rubber-band outlines of people you haven't remembered yet?

So glad OFF is still being brought up. I think it fell off a lot of people's radar and I hardly see it getting the praise it deserves. To this day have not played anything like it, there's just nothing I can compare it to, not to mention its so full of content and so engaging for only about 9 hrs worth of gameplay, something that could be beaten in a day. I would love for it to get a resurgence of some kind

I got into a OFF hype at one point, looking up all sorts of fan content and making some of my own. I really love the game, likely for its stylistic art and nature of the world. OFF just seems special to me and I always get perked up when mentioned in videos like these.

I want these games to make a comeback, Omori worked so well _because_ it used the rpg maker horror elements to its advantage

Yume Nikki is timeless. I still replay the original every year in a ritual fashion on top of the community being very active online/multiplayer.
