I haven't talked about it much on this channel, but I play and enjoy a lot of Role Playing Games. While some of the games in this video have had so much discussion around them, I find that not a lot of people talk about the locations in said games. And while it can be easy to remember the intense action or emotional moments of games, the softer and chill moments in games are just as important. RPGs that have good or even excellent towns are important and it's usually the ultimate sign of a games quality. The amount of culture, the chatter of characters, and story relevance shows a commitment from game developers to express themselves, and that should be celebrated while they're still around and making games.

Towns have always been my favorite thing in JRPGs. My favorite kind of town would have something in it that does have main story quest and battling in it, like going through a mansion dungeon, lab dungeon, or something like a big building dungeon with a hotel theme or something.
@richcrisps
@richcrisps 3 ай бұрын
This reminds me of FF7 Nibelheim, where the mansion has enemies and stuff in it. I didn't even consider it for some reason, but it also pretty great! This happens few times in classic FF now that I think about it... Interesting to think about. Thanks for the comment :)

Okay, fine, I can't even help but hit that subscribe button. This is just... ugh, it speaks to me. So many places in Legend of Mana just feel... wondrous, and solemn, haunting, and cheerful, warm and delightful. Even... your Home, a little town all of your own, in Legend of Mana... when you go inside and the music sort of turns down, and you can hear the crackling of the fire in the fire place... it is a home. And what a home it is. EDIT: Oh, I saw your FFT, and that reminded me. The intro to Final Fantasy Advance, and sort of Prologue, in the Town of Saint Ivalice.... wow did they nail the vibe of that place!

Colony 9 is peak comfy... it has such homely vibes, and the music outside of town gives off pure "the adventure begins, but nothing bad has happened yet" energy. I remember taking my time here, knowing that something bad was bound to happen if I progressed the story, which would trigger a chain of events and lead me away from that cozy town and area. And oh boy, that cutscene hit me right in the feels when I eventually got to it. It made all that time I spent at Colony 9 even more meaningful, as I didn't regret not spending more time there. Another town I love is Pallet Town. I think the idea behind its tiny size was that to a kid, their home town kinda "feels" this small. At least to me. Like growing up, all that was really relevant to me was my house, my friend's house, and school. But as soon as you head out and explore, suddenly towns seem bigger, and you start "seeing" shops and other buildings as you need to use them. Then whenever you come back home, you get that sense of nostalgia from the music and seeing your mother, and everything feels small and cozy again. Great video, I love this topic.

Love Colony 9 so much, you’re spot on with that! Pallet Town is also so good, it’s so quaint and small, like everyone who lives there knows each other on a personal level. I’m glad you like the video, thanks a ton c:

@@richcrisps don't push yourself to play all of them, I think its perfectly acceptable to just play the Sky trilogy because it has a level of heart, comfort, and authenticity I think most of later games don't quite measure up to with their more plot-driven natures and attempts to appeal to a broader audience. Its really only the Sky games that have that Grandia or Lunar type of feel to them. But yeah, god, they're fucking masterpieces. Rolent and Bose in particular are so lovely, and the fact that you come back to them so many different times under so many different circumstances just makes you feel the growth of the characters and the sheer depth of the world each time. aaaaaaaa~~!!! its great

The need for a reprive from normal gameplay reminds me of when modded maps for things like Doom or Halo fail to understand that sometimes theres empty corridors and rooms to help pace out the gameplay, and give the mind a moment to fill in the blanks, and instead fill everything with encounter after encounter.

Another excellent RichCrisps joint. I know you're known (at least to me) as the Armored Core Gal but this was a very nice, relaxing video; I'd absolutely love love love to hear you divulge on other topics that interest you, gaming or otherwise. Your videos have the same comfortable, "friend talking to me" feeling that I get from creators like Lute, while also being informative as well! Shining Force was the first strategy game I'd ever played via the 360 genesis collection, and it was incredibly charming and novel to me. I've heard good things about Sword of Haija, I always forget that it and it's prequel were remade on the Sega CD. I'll probably play CD eventually, seems pretty neat c:
