Skyrim especially leans on the importance of Shouts. Thematically the game is about the power of voice and magic in shouts or Thuum as they refer to it. Dragons don’t breath fire, ice and lightning. It is their Thuum that “cast” the magic. The vocal arrangements are meant to evoke the power in shouting. The language is canonical to the lore as well. …now do Halo.

@edim108

@@maeschder No language is ever "complete". There is for example a tribe in the Amazon that speaks a language where there is no concept of past or future, as well as no numbers- hard to wrap your head around if you are anyone but members of that tribe. The only language that could technically be considered "complete" is Sanskrit, but it has over 100 BILLION words thanks to peculiarities of its grammar and such- it's a VERY precise and nuanced language where you can describe practically everything, every concept you can think of, with a single, very precise word. Where Tolkien left off, other writers and the community picked up and today Quenya is a language you can have actual, meaningful conversations in. And Dovahzul has some quirks. It isn't exactly 1-1 "English with different words" though it is VERY much based on English for convenience. It isn't nearly as "finished" as Quenya or Dothraki, but the community works hard on making it so.

What I love about TES series' OSTs is how they use one theme throughout every new game as a base for their new main theme. This song (Dragonborn) is based on the original song (Nerevar Rising) from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowwind (as well as Reign of the Septims from TES IV: Oblivion). For seasonal gamers of the franchise, hearing those notes is like coming home. Or even better, coming to your safe place where dragons cross the skies and magic lights the night. I’ll never forget my first time booting up Skyrim. I hadn’t played a video game in 15 years, had some free time, and wanted a game that was fantasy/D&D-like. I brought home a PS4 and Skyrim. I remember the black intro on my large TV screen and the logo cloaked in billowing fog, and that magnificent theme playing. I was so intimidated, excited, I felt like I was about to step into another dimension. I stood there in awe in front of the TV while the song played, feeling like as soon as I started the game a Viking mounted on a dragon would appear there in my living room.

They do, adapted to the themes and ambients of their regions: Morrowind being the chill lonely island; Oblivion the glorious prosperous capital epic and honorable; Skyrim being the norse battle-centered viking region. Same song (or base for it, better) just different themes to work on with regarding to that song. There is somewhere in youtube a very nice video with the three songs one after the other and it's very nice to see and compare them.

The part where it opens up to at 6:45 is a callback to the main motif of the series. The motif was first introduced in the third entry game "Morrowind" in a track titled "Call of Magic" which is now just referred to as the games main theme, and has been iterated upon several times since in the overall Elder Scrolls franchise. It's a wonderful melodic motif, extremely fitting for a medieval fantasy open world setting where you're called to explore and adventure.

What I think is maybe strings and then brass sneak in a bit of this about 2:30 - 2:55 as well. I only recently realized this was a running theme with the series, despite having played them all on release! All of the plays on it are great, though I have a soft spot for Nerevar Rising / Call of Magic.

I think the fact that the emphasis is on the vocals is very fitting, considering that one of the main game mechanics is the Thu’um, which is basically shouting words in the dragon language to give you special abilities. Don't know if anyone posted this, but while the lyrics are in Dovahzul (the dragon language in the game), there's actually a translation. Dragonborn , Dragonborn, by his honor is sworn, To keep evil forever at bay! And the fiercest foes rout when they hear triumph's shout, Dragonborn, for your blessing we pray! Hearken now, sons of snow, to an age, long ago, And the tale, boldly told, of the one! Who was kin to both wyrm, and the races of man, With a power to rival the sun! And the voice, he did wield, on that glorious field, When great Tamriel shuddered with war! Mighty Thu'um, like a blade, cut through enemies all, As the Dragonborn issued his roar! And the Scrolls have foretold, of black wings in the cold, That when brothers wage war come unfurled! Alduin, Bane of Kings, ancient shadow unbound, With a hunger to swallow the world! But a day, shall arise, when the dark dragon's lies, Will be silenced forever and then! Fair Skyrim will be free from foul Alduin's maw! Dragonborn be the savior of men! Dragonborn, Dragonborn, by his honor is sworn, To keep evil forever at bay! And the fiercest foes rout when they hear triumph's shout, Dragonborn, for your blessing we pray! (I'm not responsible for this translation, BTW) This is basically a prophecy framing the conflict of the game, with the playable character being the Dragonborn, and the main antagonist being Alduin. Really enjoyed your reaction - this song is definitely iconic for Skyrim! Would like to see you do some OSTs from Monster Hunter (Zinogre Theme or Mizutsune Theme from Rise are good options) or the main theme for ARK: Survival Evolved are all themes I think you'd enjoy. Thanks!

Skyrim was so important at it's release for keeping single player RPGs alive, when everyone was calling the death of single player games with everyone having broadband internet and smartphones, with multiplayer games making so much sales. It's release was so huge, lots of big video game companies who were chasing the multiplayer money realised they were missing out on a huge audience that wants that more atmospheric personal adventure of a single player game. It's enduring appeal has kept the game reselling in different remasters for over a decade. It's music is absolutely paramount in immersing the player into their own personal world.

Bloodborne - The First Hunter Also it's kinda funny you mention the vocals being very prominent in the mix, as your character's special ability in the game is to literally shout at enemies with various different effects, and the power of The Voice has a lot of significance to the lore, so I wonder if they did that intentionally.

There is some information I could share about this number. It’s said that the world of the Elder Scrolls is itself a song. The percussion, the drums, that’s the heart of Shor. His heart is the heart of the world. And is called Doom Drum. A bloody warrior god. The hero god of mortals. The chorus? That’s written in Dovahzul. Which was the language created for this game. It’s the language of dragons. And is meant to translate perfectly in to English and tells the story of Skyrim. These are the English lyrics: Dragonborn, Dragonborn by his honor is sworn To keep evil forever at bay! And the fiercest foes rout when they hear triumph's shout, Dragonborn, for your blessing we pray! Hearken now, sons of snow, to an age, long ago and the tale, boldly told, of the one! Who was kin to both wyrm and the races of man with a power to rival the sun And the Scrolls have foretold of black wings in the cold, that when brothers wage war come unfurled! Alduin, Bane of Kings, ancient shadow unbound, with a hunger to swallow the world! But a day, shall arise, when the dark dragon's lies, will be silenced forever and then! Wow, I didn't know that, that's actually really impressive that he had it all done before development. It seems like composers often need references the same way animators do, and I'm surprised the soundtrack came together so cohesively. It's also just a beautiful, beautiful score. As much as I love the main theme I don't think it's that representative of how contemplative and ethereal the full soundtrack can be. Anyway, I've always thought Jeremy Soule was a genius, but this was still a really impressive bit of information.

In this game you are a Dragonborn, someone with the body of a human but the soul of a dragon. You are a powerful dragon slayer and capable of absorbing their souls and taking their power for yourself. You have the gift of the Voice, a powerful magic invoked by speaking words in the dragons' language. It holds the power to change the weather or summon dead heroes from the afterlife to fight for you. I think this piece really captures the essence of the theme of a powerful, commanding voice getting up to some epic shenanigans.
