Wow, this video is a bummer. When I think sample games, I think, show me what this engine can do and how cool it can look! What use is a mundane completely RTP sample, we already know the engine can do that. These games were made with love and painstakingly worked on for everyone's benefit, also they were made in extremely short time periods, 30 days for Caz's and 2 weeks for Archeia's/Ocean Dreams, like how many of the people thoughtlessly bashing them has made anything even half as cool in that much time. And not to win a game jam prize, or get recognition, but for the community to use and improve upon. I love you Toasty, but this makes me sad.
@Toastyfunnyguy4 жыл бұрын
It’s the same thought process as when someone puts a price tag on their game, it’s judged by a different standard. Here, the games have been given DEGICAS official stamp, so I’m going to judge them as an officially sanctioned product and not as a game made in 30 days. If someone made a game in 30 days and charged money for it I’d judge it in the same way I am with these games. It doesn’t matter how much time or effort went into it (tho I do respect it), what matters is the end result. And even if these games are providing free art assets for the community (something I didn’t realize until after the video went up), the games themselves are still rather bland examples of video games made in this engine and set the bar rather low for the level of quality DEGICA is okay with. The only standard they really set is the art. (Since apparently not a single human checks the description of KZbin videos I’m pinning your comment Tea because I feel my reply perfectly encapsulates my changed feelings after learning that the art is free to use).

Toasty, I think the reason why people disagree with you is because you're speaking for the collective and setting an arbitrary standard for what you believe a sample game should be. And that's fair. You're entitled to your own opinion. But the video makes you look ungrateful because, to Tea's point, the game and everything that came with it was made for the community. I think the comparison you drew is a bit unfair when it comes to the thought process. I'd argue that a good reason why paid games are held to a higher standard is because there's a market value to consider. If you're used to paying $20 for great games (of any kind), and someone shells out a RPG Maker game for the same price with crappy mapping, minimal custom resources, and average writing... Then there's a solid argument to be made that the game is overpriced and judged differently. Not to mention, you spent your hard-earned money on that product. So that too comes with a sense of ownership. Degica never commited to a standard, and I don't think there should be some "golden standard" for sample games. We don't even really know what that would be at this point.

Agreed agreed. And the funny thing is, too, the only exceptional thing on display here is the graphics work. Anything else is stuff that anyone using the engine can learn how to do. Plus, a lot of people who pick up the engine in the first place are artists who don't really want to learn to code or anything like that (myself included), so saying a game doesn't work as an example because the graphics are too nice is kind of ridiculous.

I discovered RPG Maker a long time ago. We're talking decades. I always found it to be a great tool for making AN RPG, but very inflexible when I wanted to go beyond what the core engine does. Of course this has changed quite a bit over the years with the introduction and expansion of plug-ins. But I still feel there is room for improvement. It's really just comes down to one thing for me. It's the underlying stats system that has remained so rigid. I know there are plenty of plug-ins that allow for modifications, but feel that RPG Maker will really become a great tool as soon as it allows for the expansion and modification of stats right out of the box.

As someone who recently got into RPG Maker I TOALLY know where you're coming from. As standalone gamesthey could be quite good, however that is NOT what a sample game should be. A "sample" should be a representative example of the capabilities of the engine. Without customized scripts or graphics. (I dunno if there were customized scripts) And even this "restriction" could have great potential for a good sample game as it forces someone to only use their resources that are available to them and find new ways to use them. Maybe only one sample game, but put all the effort into that one game. It should show the customer what the customer COULD make by themselves with this engine alone. The fact that you can download the assets from the sample games doesn't change the fact that those assets were originally made for those sample games (well except if someone can tell me that the creators were given those assets.)

As someone who has little to any artistic capability and programming experience, RPG Maker is my getaway to making the game I have always wanted. I love the engine for the concept of what it is. An engine that anybody can use to make a game regardless of their age, limitation, and intention. However as you touched on, these sample games don't do that. The art and graphics are great, but outside of the combat system. why not use everything of MZ's base assets? It's very misleading to someone like me who has those limitations in art and programming and want to create a game on a similar level. These are sample games made to give you an idea of what the engine itself offers. Show us what the engine can do for someone who just wants to make a game right now. Not a "you can make a game if you meet the following criteria." type deal.

"It's very misleading to someone like me who has those limitations in art and programming and want to create a game on a similar level. These are sample games made to give you an idea of what the engine itself offers." Not saying you're wrong at all, because as I mentioned in an earlier comment, I'm on the fence about how I feel. But I'm trying to understand your perspective when you say this. Why would it be misleading when only the graphics have changed? There are several screenshots available on the software download/purchase page that shows and explains pretty much everything you get. When we already have that for reference, why should the sample game have the RTP when they can inspire developers who may not even know how flexible the engine is with custom resources?
@Scarecrohh4 жыл бұрын
Personally, i say it's misleading because if i just casually glance over those screenshots and details to then try out a sample game. I will feel mislead because i read that MZ has "the most assets in RM history!" yet, the only asset used is the new battle system and nothing else. It just wouldn't make any sense to me. But I do see where you're coming from when you say these sample games could be made with the goal to inspire developers that want to see how flexible RM's engine is, with their own custom resources. i think that's great and it pushes for more game diversity to be shown when it comes to that. However personally as a casual RM user, i just think it would be better to show off the capabilities of what can be made with just and only MZ's RTP. You are investing nearly $100 into this software, so why not show what is possible right now with MZ.

Congrats on the 1k subscribers bro! With regards to the video... I can't really say you're wrong in anything that was said. I'm just not sure I agree with holding sample games to that kind of standard, considering the limited time. Also, you make a great argument regarding RTP in Sample games. I'm on the fence about this one, but just to give another perspective... Imo, the sample games are supposed to provide a solid example of what can be done with the engine. Doesn't necessarily mean you have to showcase RTP. The RTP is shown in several screenshots when looking at the engine in Steam or on the Website. So you already see what you're getting along with screenshots of the sample maps. Personally, it's hard for me to discourage the use of RTP in completed projects, then get upset when someone is setting the expectation for custom art to be used. Especially when it can inspire people to make unique games. And that's ultimately what I want as a fan of the genre. All the best bro!

Both my son and I purchased RPG Maker MZ. James has experienced this tool, but it was my first time in decades playing with blocks. Of course, James dove in, beginning multiple games until one emerged a solid contender. He also purchased a boatload of other tile sets and add-ons. He's made a rather good surface map and developed an outstanding "First Town" intro area. My efforts, on the other hand, used the seminal package offered with the game. I have my little, bobble-headed bunch tripping along, out of the deep wood where they come across an inn with an apple orchard, a lively pond (exploring the animation), and a chicken coop with a rooster standing atop the roof, eyeing his bevy of hens and clutch of chicks.... *sigh* My thoughts are directed toward the visual components of the original, out-of-the-box tools given the buyer. They are inadequate, disappointing, and are unnecessarily tedious to paste together an effective visual experience; one that immediately immerses the player into your world. In other words, the beginning of every game looks like the beginning of every other game developed on the many iterations of RPG Maker. This, perhaps, is why you are no longer feeling the love. If a new indie game developer wants their game to be the next major indie event, the first few minutes of play-time has to grab the audience's attention, and scream "I am different and worthy". If we are not allowed to do that, I'm afraid our delightfully imaginative story will never survive the click of the ESC Key of dismissal. The potential guest will move on to find something that feels ... different. The hook is everything. One more thing ... how did bobble-headed freaky children become the norm when it comes to main characters? Look, I know true adult dimensions are unlikely to be used as the new standard for human PCs and NPCs, but aren't we getting rather tired of trying to create a game with some dark elements using a cast of characters who look like they stepped out of a Hallmark shop? Why are we not offered more of an RPG Maker XP look? Seriously, RPG Maker is going to have to reconsider ALL the choices if it wants to stay on top. Someone's going to develop a better idea ... something called RPG "Creator", perhaps. I've had a lot of fun making my hens and chicks move at different intervals and speeds. It's a kick playing around with this. However, there are many who want this to yield something more, and someone else will build it. that's all, folks. P.S. For future areas, I'll be changing the tiles to something more sophisticated, and adding new apps to my war chest. I may just be playin', but I want to create something that breaks the molde. I believe I have a good story to weave.

wow , it sounds like the first rpgm project i made would have been a better sample game to use than these ones o: 20 minute playtime , no grinding , no custom sprites or tilesets (outside some minor photoshop edits) , balanced , and actually shows off more than the engine's capabilities since i figured out my own way to animate the enemies for the front view battle (which i've also made tutorial videos for btw)

I think I would be more happy if they improve the RTP pack in these games. The art is so apart, and if don't know how to mimic the art style they will be useless. A sample game with a decent structured house would be educative, show the engine and add some new graphics to the ever lacking RTP. Don't even need a good story. Fallen Feather Ok a couple of things. 1. How is him not liking turn based combat of the best things about the Channel? Gameplay is probably one of the most important aspects of a game, and him not really liking those types of games is kinda not a great thing when that’s the primary type of game he reviews, since you will either A.Might ignore any innovation or any game play changing features that makes it different from others. Or B.Acknowledge those facts but down play them or dislike them due the lack of interest in the Genre. C. Acknowledge them and *may* like them. Now I’ll be honest I’ve only watched one or two videos on toasty boy Channel so he may be a lot better than what I suggest earlier but I think inherently that’s not a great thing, since as he said himself he just want to get Through to combat just so he can do other things. 2. This thing about “good taste” What do you mean by that exactly? Why are his taste good or better then the rest? I’d barely know anything about toasty outside of the fact he’s doesn’t really like RPG part of RPG maker, and he dislikes these game. Which aren’t Really determinators of taste in my book, I really know much about his taste so I can’t really agree with anything your saying. 3. How are turnbased game outdated? Like I’m curious, sure there are something turnbased game can’t other Genres can’t because that’s applies to every genre. Like what do you even mean? Because there a decent amount turn based games that sell pretty well even to this day. And a lot of favorite games come from this category, so if I make a commercial RPG Maker It would probably be in the style so toasty opinions probably won’t mean much to me Since he doesn’t like the genre, it would be fine to get his perspective but i Think I would probably take it with less focus then someone else reviewing the game.

Fallen Feather it just shows he new to rpgs. That’s like a guy reviewing fighting games and declaring how he hates combos. That’s like someone who reviews hip hop music and declares he hates lyricism. We can tell a ‘09er from a og. Nothing against new fans to the genre though but they don’t really know anything about Rpgs if their first introduction to it is kingdom hearts or whatever. Those who grew up with the nes and snes had to deal with hardware limitations, they weren’t spoiled so they still had fond memories of how the turn based system captured their imaginations when technology was limited. That stuff is kinda lost to today’s generation because they’re spoiled and don’t know of the limitations in old Rpg games. U can’t really expect today’s kids to appreciate a game like Chrono trigger because they’re feature whores. But those who are fascinated by history and period pieces may admire the turn based system and other aspects of it. Today’s gamers expect widescreen 4K stuff so they may see a full screen rpg and scoff at it however most old heads still prefer 4:3 rpgs

Speaking as someone who lacks artistic skills if I didn't have VX Ace already and thinking of buying MZ, I would believe those images are in the actual engine, and would expect I would have the ability to make as decent sprites/buildings as what they show. My skill is in world-building/lore and unique "mechanics". I also know a few programming languages, but lack any type of drawing skills. I would be very disappointed to buy this thinking "Hey this will allow me to make a great looking game" only to find out what is in the box is completely different and reminiscences of old JPRGs. Not to mention it seems these sample games didn't showcase any new mechanics really aside from the combat....

Games made by "artist" what did you expect ? Obviously they will do things they are good for, make graphisms, tiles, maps, characters etc... but the rest will be horrible. All the demonstration side of the rpg maker is not their problem, they make pubs for them, not for the software x) Kinda sad indeed.
