I found this game series about a year ago, I saw a twitter post that was just the title image of black souls 2, no text or description, no comments and like 10 likes. I looked it up and after I figured out how to emulate it on a phone, I played both games over the course of a summer, and I have to say, I love dark souls, but I never really cared for turn based games, and surprisingly I had never played an rpgmaker game before, or an eroge, so it was a little bit of a high sell. Yeah no, after that summer I have to say that black souls 2 is my 2nd favorite game of all time, right next to dark souls 3 at number 1, and if a parody game can be so good it gets that close to the inspiration I think it deserves all the sales in the world, even if as you say it has a high bar of entry, I really believe that a lot of people can benefit from having at least some kind of interest this dark. It doesn't have to be black souls, but more diverse interests can do a lot of good for a lot of people, I can understand not wanting to because of personal trauma, that I respect, but for everyone else I don't see a reason not to engage in these stories, outside of being not mature enough. Other than that, this game got me into other rpgmaker, turn based, and eroge games, and I really found out how much I had been missing out on by giving them the time of day, which at least personally, I feel all too many people do these days, only sticking with what they like and never venturing out of what is "safe" or popular, so I am glad that this game is getting more recognition, even if it comes with the stipulation that I feel like we are inching ever closer to it being found by the twitter hate mob and the dev is harassed out of making games. In all, good review, I hope you make one about the second game too, these games are truly special, even now a year or so after I finished my completionist runs of both games, I still learn small new things about either game, and when I first played them, without a guide, I nearly got a headache a couple times because of how confusing it is, and the game really makes you feel like a piece of shit, but that's what makes the end of it so cathartic. When you are there, at the final stage of the play, either with or without those you chose to save, you start to feel like maybe it was all worth it, maybe if you could just win this last fight you would be able to rest again, and finally, when you get that peace, you know it won't last, you know that she will only live till 20, and after she's gone you will be alone again, and you think "what did I really accomplish?" and "would it have been better if I was trapped in the cycles?" all the fighting, all the sins, you chose to do that, you could have been happy getting your ending, but you chose to go deeper, you chose to fight more and more powerful opponents, you chose to try every option, to commit those sins just to see what it would do, or if you reached your breaking point. I love this game because you could also not do all that, there is very little this game forces you to do, and while no, playing this game does not make you a bad person, it's good at making you feel like you are.

I think the sin counter adds weight because if you try to be good you can get a nice ending and blah blah blah. But to get the true ending, Spoilers You have to kill every single fairy tale character so you can return their book to the library. It was genuinely agonizing, I felt so guilty.

Yeah I'll stick with Lisa the Painful. It's pretty much everything you said, but handled a bit better and has original graphics. But thanks for sharing it anyway.

You definitely should at least get all the endings before you move on to the sequel. The game has ng+ for a reason and it's not just for fluff. You can also toggle adult scenes on or off in the gallery. You can change your character sprite there too (its even required for a scene with the final boss of the traditional endings)

Grat video man, the japanese ero rpg market has a lot of hidden gems even if it doesnt seem like it at first (cant help it i guess, 98% of games in that market are kinda trashy, but the other 2% makes it worth the hassle). You should check out a franchise called the SEQUEL series, by hakika, despite not being as lore heavy as Black Souls, it has a lot going on it that makes it stand out among other games: original OST, surprisingly deep world building, a lot of games to play (8 games in the series as of now, both mainline and spinoffs, including a separate horror game, and another 7-8 games that are a PREQUEL to this series), a developer with surprising work ethics (dev doesnt sleep it seems, he does the coding, writing, art, and music all by himself for 30~ish hours long games and it takes him only one year or so to complete them), overall wholesome and cozy vibes and more. An underrated gem, heavily recomended.

tried it and gotta say, this aint balanced at all, sure the combat is cool and all but like just farm speed souls at sewers till u have like 800 and u basically already beat the game, mage builds even a worse offender when combined with a ring that lets u heal 5% of ur mana per turn, I can spam my strongest moves that insta kill the final bosses forever and it takes no time to get to that power level I managed to become immortal in about 6 hours on my first playthrough, Had I known the strat from the beginning I could have probably become a god in 2-3h its a shame that such an interesting system is overshadowed by a simple speed mage build, I dont even need to summon my party members cuz they just waste a turn its that bad my brain is turned off all of the time when fighting cuz its just free

I would like to recommend Black souls 2, it improve on every single part of Black souls 1 The story is great, the gameplay is much much much more refined and also the art as well. Im pretty sure that if you played it, making a video about it wouldn't be a choice althought it's much bigger than Black souls 1. Anyway, there's a Russian 12 hours video about black souls 2, with no pauses or stalling, just a man explaining every single detail he studied from the game.

If black souls caught your interest, I'd suggest you to give a shot at The Heart of Darkness by BigWednesday. An heavily modified rpgmaker game that oozes dark souls vibes. It's all about exploring, creating synergies with your equipment and slaying a corrupted saint. It's a great dark fantasy rpg with optional (and disturbing) adult content. It's great and cost like 18 dollars on steam. Nice video by the way. I wish you all a good day.
