Considering I can splatter flies at 50 yards with my .22LR Ruger Precision Rimfire, ethical kills should quite possible with .17 HMR at 100 yards or under. I've also practiced quite a bit with my rig at various distances from 10 yards to 250. Familiarity with equipment, rifle, sighting system, ammunition makes the biggest difference.

A little bit of tuning and polishing on the bolt and inside the receiver will quieten thngs and make cycling the rounds nicer. Easy way to go from factory to precision in one afternoon.

@@fpveverything7129 actually he is using a new gun that he isn't used to and he is also shooting a very small round against the wind which makes for very poor accuracy,, i personally use a 22 magnum or 223 in conditions like this cause the bigger heavier bullets aren't bothered by the wind as much , i can easily erase Prairie dogs from 300 yards with a 223 and 200 or more with a 22 magnum ,even with a 10-15mph or more gusting wind

.17hmr is a great round for longer range varmint hunting, but I feel on windy days like this you may be better off using a .22 hornet or a .223. The heavier 50 or 55 grain bullets won’t be pushed around by the wind so badly.

Don't be afraid to add wind.. I could tell your wind just by the video... it was left to right and averaging 2 to 4 MOA.. If you like using 17hmr, 204, .223 rem for dogs it doesn't hurt to grab 50 rounds and put 4 foot tall piece of cardboard and get your dope out to the max cartridge range going in 25 yard increments... It'll make contending with wind and range changes much easier and feel far less wasteful because you won't have so many range and wind misses

Second, he's definitely helping to control the population with the amount he's taking out. Last, the majority of you making fun of his misses....well.....let's just say you probably couldn't do any better and truth be told you'd probably do a lot worse. For shooting a very lightweight grain bullet out of a rimfire on such a windy day, he's actually shooting fairly decent 👍

Remember when bill ruger, of ruger firearms, and smith & wesson backed billy bob klintons assault weapons ban back in the 90’s? We didn’t forget! Both companies can surf the same turd down the toilet as bud light, as far as I’m concerned! Both companies main business was revolvers. Like the redhawk, blackhawk, gp-100, combat masterpieces, J,K,&L frame revolvers, etc. They thought people would rather have 6 magnum caliber rounds rather than 10 lesser caliber rounds with the high capacity magazine ban called for in the AWB! They thought wrong! Never forget these companies! They sold you out once before. They’ll do it again!

I did not know that. I am glad that you took the time to bring it to light. I'll try and keep it in mind. I now am almost exclusively using the Savage A-17 HMR for Prairie Dogging. It is accurate and good for follow-up shots. On a near windless day I got 33 dogs with 35 shots... but a week later with a bit more wind it took 45 shots to get 25 prairie dogs. I do love that 17 HMR but it don't buck the wind worth a darn.

@@JimThomasOutdoors Lots of people have forgotten or simply didn’t know. This happened 30 years ago, many of the younger generation wasn’t even alive when they did that. And ronnie ray gun garnered the last few needed votes for it to pass! He was NO friend of the Second Amendment! He signed the NFA act of ‘86 into law limits the number of machine guns available to the public. Many people arent aware of that fact either. And they forget that jim brady, husband of handgun control inc sarah brady was reagans press secretary. I have been looking at getting one of those A17’s. I have a Savage 93 stainless that is an absolute tack driver in calm winds. But as you said wind affects the small bullets drastically. I think I’m going to thread the barrel of the 93 and try a couple of my .22 suppressors on it to see how well it works. We have a lot of groundhogs here. I killed one out of the garden with the .17 and got 4 with a suppressed .300 blackout. They try to eat it faster than I can plant it!

Not one to steal a comment but I own a Ruger A-17 and slapped a cheapo scope from Walmart on it. Sighted at 100yds and it hits anything I point it at up to 300yds before having to aim a little high to reach out further, VERY flat shooting. So far 3 coyotes, 2 opossum, 1 bobcat and 1 fox. It’s my go to plinkster shooting pennies at 100yds with the kiddos.

@@stephenmyers4857 Hi Stephen, I'm sure your excited about your rifle. So excited you refer to it as a Ruger. Ruger doesn't make the A 17, it's a Savage. I own a Savage 93 HMR used it on prairie dogs( My first time pdog hunt) and found it to be fairly reliable to 200 yds or so, 100 to 150 yds way better. 300 yds it drops over 30 inches and I imagine the energy left on that little bullet to be questionable for good kills on coyotes . can It be done ? you attest to it . I hunt coyotes in Florida for ranchers at night, 300 yds yes but I use a 243. Still hopeful Jim will answer since he has hands on experience with both rifles . Im interested in the Ruger precision but read it has a polymer receiver and will it change over time? And Stephen I enjoyed the comment

That is correct my Ruger is my 350 legend rifle. It is a Savage.. my mistake. Reason for using 17 hmr is smaller kiddos and WAY less recoil than anything else I own. I’ve taught them to shoot at spine base of neck or bottom of ear. Works for everything and cci ballistic tips just energy dump

Cruel and heartbreaking is when farm animals, worth thousands of dollars, like horses and cows, step in these holes and break their legs. A broken leg is a death sentence for most any farm animal
