Along with the Virginian and the Santa Fe Warbonnets, the yellow, blue and Chinese vermilion of Chessie System are among my favorite railroad paint schemes.. It lasted from 1973 until 1987 and consisted primarily of the B&O, the C&O and the Western Maryland.

AC: I've always resided in Fort Wayne, IN. As a kid (I'm now almost age 76 yrs.), I used to spend some time with my Grandmother, and her sister (my Mom's Aunt) at her home in the tiny hamlet of Altona, Indiana (not to be confused with Altoona, Pennsylvania). Altona was more or less a crossroads, but it did have a nondescript village charter. This Altona burg was set on the Western Flank of the town of Garrett, Indiana, in DeKalb County, Indiana. Garrett, Indiana was named for John Garrett, who was a railroad operator prior to and during the Civil War of the 1860s. He was believed to be the founder of the railway system which became the Baltimore and Ohio. LINK: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_W._Garrett The B & O running through Garrett, was their Chicago Line. In my youth, all of the trains were being pulled with steam power. I used to wait in my Great Aunt's house there on Quincy Street in Altona. When I would hear the whistle of a West Bound coming out of the Garrett yard, I'd scurry on to the glider swing of my Great Aunt's front porch. There I would wait for the train to commence the climb of the grade outbound. In just 7 minutes or less, across Quincy Street and an open field, I would view the steamer chugging along. Sometimes they would tandem two locomotives until they had overcome the initial grade; stop, and uncouple the lead engine, and return it to the yard. What a treat for a five years old to observe.

We used to see the Chessie locomotives paint scheme down here in Springfield, Mo until about 1988-89, they were always my favorite. Back then it was almost always the Burlington Northern green. UP yellow and grey was a welcome sight, those were fewer and far between. Great video, thanks.

Very informative video. I don't know if anyone had pointed this out yet, CSXT came into existence on July 1st 1986 with the renaming of the Seaboard System Railroad. By 1987, the C&O had completed its acquisition of the B&O and later that year was absorbed by CSXT. The WM ceased to be an operating entity by May of 1983.

Another very well done video. Chessie system was always a favorite of mine, for rail fanning and model railroading back in the 70’s. I have a box of photos I been meaning to go thru for years. Many pics from the 1970 to late 1980 era. Guess I’m gonna get off my excuses and go thru them. Laurel Maryland, Jessup where auto racks were plentiful, B&O museum in Baltimore, even RF&P yard in Alexandria Va. Thanks for sharing and getting me jump started. 👍👍👍😎😎😎 Cary

@@Trains21 Yes, regarding the weather: we Floridians like to say we only get two seasons down here, Summer and January! But this is a train thread not a weather thread. We love our trains and don't mind the 10-15 min. interruption too much at grade crossings. It gets annoying when we have to wait longer.

Those Chessie engines probably have my favorite paint scheme of all time. Always impressed with your extensive amount of knowledge in these informational videos. There’s actually and old chessie boxcar sitting next to a train yard I frequently visit. It has no wheels and is sitting on ballast. Believe it is used to store equipment inside. I think it’s marked C & O 21370 or something like that. It was remarked for IAIS but the patching has faded so you can make out the numbers. Also great choice of pictures in the video, keep up the good work!

I was really sad when the B&O got swallowed by the C&O/Chessie System /CSX. I grew up with the B&O blue with grey diesel engines. I never knew how the merger went down before. Now I follow the Indiana & Ohio, because they bought or leased the line that runs from Cincinnati through Madeira OH. It was a B&O later CSX property. Hence my thing for the B&O.
