You are an exceptional worker and your attention to detail (even on the much much bigger buildings) is incredible, and I've seen it first hand in DiResta's shop. Keep up the awesome work Kyle, you're doing great things for this community of builders and makers.

My uncle and one of my most important mentors coming into the plumbing trade would not only tell me I had done something "not good", he would ask me questions about how I had gotten it like it was- then he told me where I had lost the "path"- as much trouble as you claim Gregg is, you may never be able to run him off; his responses show he gains from your patience and detailed attention. Saw your pre announcement- I vote for the larger content; the "non pole barn" stuff like your home remodel!

Earthly Fire fly question: who made love? Who made you? Often these kind of response are quite normal ! We fight anyone who wants us to give our selfs over to them. Nothing new? Now whatever it is u made up or someone else made up is exactly what u condemn? So let’s say a half million ppl start following you and what u are pitching? Now you are what you condemn? Jesus said “come to all you who are weary and I will give you rest? Take of my yoke for I am lowly” Does that sound arrogant to you? It’s in Matthew 11:28-30 & John 15:13 (new testament) The Bible is Rich in truth and no man! No man! Has ever or will ever find a lie attributed to Jesus and the Bible has been around between old & new Testament over 5 thousand years? Suddenly your on the scene & have determined what you say is true pertaining to God’s word ???? Come on man? Pick it up and read it then make a legitimate qualified comment? Ok brother don’t get me wrong I love you because Christ died for you?

I used to hang siding for a living. You hit the nail on the head when you said you put the trims (I'm assuming you mean corner posts) on too early. We ALWAYS snapped the baseline first to see how out of level the house is. I've done some jobs where it is out by 3-4 inches. What we did in those cases was put one row of siding (or flashing) on the bottom first following the out-of-level house line. Then we would cut the top off one row of siding and nail that on top of the flashing to establish our true level line. Then the rest of the siding would just hook on that and up we went. So what you were left with is the first course of siding (or flashing) being wide on one end and narrow on the other, but the siding would be level after that all the way up. The main thing is you got your siding level before hitting the bottoms of your windows, because if you don't get that then it looks totally ghetto.

Did help. Good, bad, or crazy, my thought process is a lot like yours. With metal roofing that I’ve put in over a dozen of with a more experienced guy we “stretch” kick it screw it repeat, to split the differenceGAVE A THUMBS UP ! Subscribed earlier. For some reason.. I’ll be watching. Learning the hard way about giving the water a place to go on the bottoms of windows and doors. Guy that help me upgrade and replace my sliding glass door had 30+ years experience. Granted he was mainly a framer but he should’ve known better. That was three almost 4 years ago. I know a lot more now than I did then but that doesn’t get rid of the south spot in the floor in the middle under my newish sliding glass door. Has to come out and be redone now.Live and learn. And your trim.. that stuff happens. It’s not the first time it’s not gonna be the last.

It always amazes me to see the amount of technology you need to do your job. All we used was a chalk line and bubble level in the 1970s. No calculator either, just a board pencil and math. But good to see how good you make it work.

Laser level is very interesting, because I remember somewhere around the early 1970's when I worked hanging Sheetrock in a large housing apartment complex the hung ceiling guys used a rotating laser for ceiling hangers. It's amazing to me that they had that commercial technology back then.

Great series Kyle. Hopefully after you raise Gregs rent, you can "afford" to insulate the attic space and doors as well. Most of us here in California have this miracle siding called stucco. It's amazing and buildings don't need to be "plumb dead straight". =)

One thing that's rarely mentioned is the threat of exterior fire. Steel siding and roofing help with this. As do metal clad tempered glass windows. If one wants more fire protection, a layer of exterior sheet rock under metal cladding is a good plan. Most of the houses currently turning to smoke in California could have been protected in this way.
@adubbelde15 жыл бұрын
Were it I, after establishing the first course, I would have made a story pole that was long enough to reach your soffit. I'd space it with the recommended reveal (7" I believe is your reveal). Then set it against the soffit and lean it until one of the course lines rests on the top of your first course. Mark each course and snap your lines. whatever variation you have would be spread over all the courses.

When I owned my millwork business, a competitor sold a job of 46 2' 2' awning windows on a job in Illinois. The homeowner removed all the stickers from the windows before installation. Over 75% were installed upside down or on the side which caused major leakage problems. The window manufacturer hire me to find out what was wrong. That's how I caught the mistake.

Yes do a video on how to seal around windows and doors , seems like different builders do it different ways. And when putting on siding ,do you put all your trim around windows and doors first? Inside and outside cotners? How you seal your siding to that trim?

As a siding contractor. If you’re off 3/4 in 40ft the difference in a 4 foot window is minuscule. (.75/40=x/4 and solve for x, that’s what your off in 4 ft) Get above the windows then make your adjustments to make it look good with the soffit.

I've always taped inside and outside of the window and over lapped the house wrap on top of the window it's over kill on it but never got any leaks on the jobs I've seen a lot of people not cut. Back the top and leaks on a brand new house and with all these New types of siding coming out Hardie board looks great if it's not installed correctly they will leak most important thing on this house is the over hang make sure all the drip edge and seamless gutters just make sure you don't have any back water seems and you will be fine

I always shorten the reveal on my first piece of lap siding by about 3/8'' . For instance if you are running a 6'' exposure the first one will be 5 5/8''. I do this because the lack of a shadow line makes the first piece always look bigger. The way I think the windows should be flashed are as follows. Window tape in the bottom of the sill. None on the bottom fin on the outside. Cut the house wrap back from the edges of the opening about 2'' on the sides'. Flip the top paper up over the window. Run the sides up, taping the window flange, sheeting and wrap up to above window by a couple inches.. Then tape the top flange to the sheeting, flip down the paper above tape the corners . This keeps air from funneling into the house through the wrap, because it will.
@jase54155 жыл бұрын
try that new window flashing that stretches around the corners...makes the corners 100% sealed leaves room for water penetration
