If I wasn't such a purist I would have, it looked stunning in bare steel.

@@RRCRestoration I'm guessing it's a cro-moly steel? Mild steel couldn't possibly look that good after 35 years, especially not where the paint had rubbed off already.

I do that with my bike builds . I build around a dozen " industrial style " bikes a year (among others). Right now my favorite clear for bare metal is Cerakote clear . It's formulated for bare metal.
@joer88543 жыл бұрын
For those who haven't used it, self etch primer is incredibly thin and it's only purpose is to provide an adhesion layer so paint will stick to the metal. There's no need to use a gun and it doesn't really have any build up or alter the prepared surface at all. As he said, it's much easier and cleaner to spray from a can and there's not really an added benefit to spraying from a gun like there would be for regular primer or paint.

Professional from A2Z. Probably the best hands on motorcycle restoration channel on youtube. I have an old Zündapp KS 50 Watercooled from the late 70s which I kept for a restoration purpose some time down the line which obviously never came (I was 16 when I bought it now I'm 56), just in case you need new material to film, this could be a win win situation to be discussed?

Looking at the factory welds with the frame in bare metal, I'm feeling pretty damn good about my new skills as a totally KZbin trained MIG welder. I'm not going to be as self critical as before. It looks like Honda sure wasn't back in 1986. If I had done those frame welds, I'd have used a few new flap discs fixing them up. I realize this was after all, a dirt bike and more based on utility than looks. So as long as they penetrate and hold all is good. Still, I'd see them every time I looked at the bike had I done those. Your beautiful paint as usual, looks amazing!

I remember many years ago liberally applying waxoyl inside the windscreen surround of my very delapidated 2CV. All went well until the next hot sunny day after I had pumped in copious amounts of waxoyl which lost its viscosity and oozed out of the windscreen surround into oily puddles in the front foot wells, not that 2CVs have foot wells as such. Ho hum. Thanks for uploading yet another high quality video, keep them coming. I still keep waiting for the "please subscribe" notices whenever you open a tool drawer or similar, bring them back 😆.

Loving this series so far! I was intrigued to see how functional the welding was on the frame, no nice brazing or buffed weld. I suppose tho it’s an mx bike and at that level it’s function over form. Great Work. I thought the bare frame was in excellent shape given the abuse the machine has had to suffer over it's lifetime. It would have looked pretty amazing Nickle Plated. I have to say that the welders in Honda's Competition department did a better job than the ones who welded together my old CB175 back in 1972!🤣 The sub frame was not as well finished so I guess they gave that to the apprentices to finish. Top work as usual. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Hogmanay. I hope you get to raise a glass or two and do some socially distanced "first footing" Keep Safe

That frame is looking mint once again, great job! This might go against the spirit of the channel but would you consider a restomod project? For example, a bike like this but with modern engine, electrics and engineering but keeping it looking like an 80's dirt bike?
@dougdunedainownerofthedoom22053 жыл бұрын
Generally with bikes like these the engine is the strong point but everything else is inferior. It’s much more common to put an old engine in a modern frame than the other way around.
@RRCRestoration3 жыл бұрын
I defo would do something like that if in the future I get something that's mechanically gone but has some cool retro charm left ;) But as Peter said its usually the engine that never goes wrong with these things lol
@tomnwoo3 жыл бұрын
The engine and electrics are often the weak point with modern bikes, they are very complicated and engineered against a different set of constraints that did not exist in the 80s, better off keeping the old stuff, not as environmentally friendly, but powerful reliable and simple.
