I present to you RRPG's Final Fantasy Retrospective!
Episode 7 sees the Final Fantasy series starting its run on the PlayStation's successor console; the PlayStation 2! Yoshinori Kitase and his team who were responsible for both Final Fantasy VII & VIII would be in charge of introducing the 10th installment of Square's long-running, flagship franchise on 6th generation consoles. In this episode, we take a look at the series, first outing on the PlayStation 2 and its sequel that would mark a turning point between Square's successful runs and incredulous hardships that were to be inbound for their future. For being the first game to break away from tradition with the setting being mostly that amongst Japan, Thailand, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific while giving them an ancient and modern twist, Final Fantasy X and X-2 would be envisioned in the minds of those who lead the series' stronger, global appeal with Final Fantasy VII, and they consider this game to not only be the start of polymorphic content, but a prequel set in the same universe as the game that made them mark their place in gaming history. I present to you Episode 7 of RRPG's Final Fantasy Retrospective as we travel into the world of Spira where both Final Fantasy X & X-2 take place! Enjoy as this was another great episode I worked on!

Have started going through these videos, love everything and feel that what you are doing is a massive fan service to the FF franchise with delivery that is very enjoyable to listen to. My only critique are the televison channel changing noises every so often which appear in several of the videos i have watched, it is incredibly jarring. Again i love the videos and am currently binge watching these and will move on to other content when i am finished. Again, love what you are doing and eagerly await more videos.

I remember being five or six years old and watching my brother play a demo of the FFX, it was the beginning of the game where Sin attacks dream Zanarkand and I was blown away by the cinematic, with Auron calmly walking through the city as Sin begins charging up it's attack and then boom unbelievable destruction. Ever since then I've been a huge fan of Final Fantasy, Yuna and Tidus are my favorite Final Fantasy couple of all time and Blitzball is my favorite minigame of all time. FFX remains my favorite entry in the series and that goes along with X-2.

It is vastly inferior to its four predecessors in every aspects, especially when it comes to its absolutely linear nature which contradicts everything rpgs were about to this day. Most overrated FF in existence and the begin to FFs degeneration which ultimately led to FFXIII.

@@laststrike4411 Linearity is not necessarily a bad thing but an rpg which is basically a one way road is just horsedung. FFX withdraws any standards in terms of exploration, secrets (rewards for exploring), adventure etc. which have been established within the genre over years.

@@laststrike4411 And regarding FFVIII: It had all those things I mentioned: More freedom, an interesting overworld, optional places and quests to conquer even early game, more demanding systems. Also: Better story, better characters, better overall soundtrack (I find the X soundtrack pretty strong though), better antagonists, better bosses, more summons.

This was such a detailed and overall entertaining retrospective. I love how you literally covered every single detail and even found very obscure footage from almost 20 years ago! You are amazing! These are my first and favorite final fantasy games. They will always hold a special place in my heart and I wish that square would go back to making games of such quality but alas this may never happen. Here's to hoping I can play another final fantasy that was as epic for me as this one! Keep up the great work, you gained a new subscriber!

Squaresoft was the epitome of the FF franchise and the other game series they had. Once it became SquareEnix, the franchise slowly is becoming what i hoped it wouldn’t be.

Ffx is the only ending from any game that brought a tear to my eyes....when tidus used the last of his strength to hug yuna....jumps off the ship into the farplane past Braska and auron to high five jecht 🥺😢😩😫....beautiful story telling....honestly the fact that ppl dont like the game is more them saying they dont like good storytelling

Or people may dislike this game due to its inferiority in comparison to FFVI-IX from a narrative as well as a gameplay perspective (FFX is called the "one way street FF" for a reason). Ultimately rating entertainment media is 100% subjective but imo calling FFX a disappointment - especially after the masterpiece FFIX has been - is an understatement. It is the second worst main FF next to FFXIII in my opinion by a mile. And I love good storytelling.

If you’re one of those people that allowed for the Laughing scene in FFX to “OVERSHADOW” the rest of that game’s amazing story then, I’m sorry to say this but, you have issues. One scene that lasts only a few minutes in a game that is thousands of times longer than that one scene ruined the WHOLE game for you?! Really? The game itself even points out how weird that scene is, the writers knew what they were doing and even made joke of it. How that can go over ANYONE’s head that’s over 12 years old is beyond me.

IMHO I think they haven't made a good one since X-2 and their golden age was pretty much VI through X-2. Outside of those I think Tactics and Crystal Chronicles are the only even halfway decent Final Fantasy games I've ever come across. 15 makes me really sad because it isn't even a completed product.

I didn't love FFX as much as the previous entries, but I did come back to it from time to time. FFX has its moments that I consider to be fantastic, but I was kind of mixed about it due to the more linear nature, goofy voice-acting and the narrative that isn't much on par with some of the best of the series. And I dislike blitzball. But I do like the approach to world building which was influenced by different cultures and religions. And I like the tropical setting of the game.

Agreed. I think FFX was a big step back after the phenomenal PSX era. It is not a bad game by any means but a disappointing FF in my books.

It seems like when Final Fantasy X came out, we've been divided as a community ever since. My very first Final Fantasy was XII and it left a very good impression on me, but most fans of the community would say that XII was mediocre at best, but that is MY FAVORITE FINAL FANTASY and it's the reason why I continue to keep an open mind with every final fantasy (especially the ones before 12, now that I'm playing them all for the first time). Every final fantasy, 7 and beyond, are all unique to me and I understand why every one of them are loved by all of the community or a subset of the community. I love Final Fantasy ❤😊

Yuna totally went incognito in X-2. 😒 Seems like they didn’t know what they actually wanted to do with the story after X, nothing really matches up between the ideas they portrayed in game, in the eternal calm and in X-2.

ff 15 was cool and all. especially for someone who loves kh and nevwr played much of the original ff games but i feel like it came out bland

It had its moments and there was potential, but the adventure itself fell short. I enjoyed my time with it, especially with later patches, but the story was pretty barren, the combat was simplistic and cumbersome at the same time and there was a higher emphasis on redundant side activities and camping simulation. I enjoyed it more than FFXIII at least, but it still hasn't met the quality standards of Squaresoft made FF games.

CliffFitter89 this comment is me. Xv’s story was so lackluster. Never played it till I bought the royal edition and I had been hyping it up since I saw the trailer as a child in 2006. FF has always been about the complex narrative and xv just totally failed on that level. Thoroughly disappointed but i am currently playing ffx for the first time and it’s nice. CFC

It's really 50/50 when it comes to people who either like or enjoy as Final Fantasy X and X-2 are not perfect games by any means. Personally, I think Final Fantasy X holds up more than its sequel, but I wasn't trying to show any bias in any way, whatsoever. Final Fantasy X did start off the difficult journey that the Final Fantasy series would have from that point on, and there are those who still feel alienated by the later entries since Final Fantasy X. That bit about the divisive nature the game gets was only a short bit or two about that ordeal when looking at the game in retrospect. That's what this whole retrospective is about as it isn't about my feelings toward the franchise nor this game, but there are points of praise and critique I will bring up if they are a huge ordeal for a specific entry.

If anything, they are the ones who are showing their bias as there were some good Final Fantasy games that came out even after the merger between Square and Enix. Sure, they weren't home runs like the earlier installments, but there were still some good games that came out of the series in both mainline entries and spin-offs after Square Enix came to be.

nope, we were tricked. we thought final fantasy x2 was yuna saving tidus then tidus will lead the way instead we get some girl game. nothing is good in ffx2. it was garbage. woke games is just riding the success of the previous title. why do you think they always bundle them up with ffx? yes cause they are afraid it wouldnt sell good if they sold them separately. most of square games bundle is all mess up unless its some woke garbage title, bundle them up! just look at all these woke games, they are not making cause they care about your feelings, just making it for money cause theres lots of you "fan boys"
