I've had 2 172 cups and an EP3 (still got a 172 cup). The gearbox in the EP3 is way ahead of the old JC5 box in the Clio, both in terms of feel and longevity. The engines in both cars feel fairly similar standard, although a K20 has a lot more tuning potential! Both are fairly similar in terms of straight line speed. Where the Clio shines, is in driver engagement and feeling connected to the car. I would say, an EP3 wins on the engine and gearbox front and the Clio wins on the chassis front. Both great cars in their own right.

False sorry, Honda Civic EP3 not in the sport city car segment like the Clio. If you want to compare it to an RS, you have to do it with the Megane for which it is in the segment, so the Megane 2 RS mk1.

Great to see you test this and a really good synopsis. I race Rotax Max karts and have a 182 [as well as some E46s etc...]. The driving position is exactly as you say, bolt upright. You feel like you're on the car rather than in it. Turn in on the 182 is fantastic, particularly on very tight corners. Few cars do it as well and it's where a Clio will gain most time over a lap. In fact around a lot of the tighter UK tracks, a Clio will embarrass more expensive kit because of that. The Ultima didn't gain massively over the Clio when it came to the very tight bits - and that was a surprise. The F4R is a decent enough engine, hard to do much to because it's a long stroke, but pokey enough in stock form. The box is a weak point and the best car to get is the proper UK Cup LHD racer with the Sadev sequential in it. They're very hard to come by and fetch close to £20K, but are fantastic. Clio or EP3 ? Probably Clio for me.

And for rev matching, as the pedal box is so close, you're best off rolling the outside of your foot ala e36, rather than heel-toe blipping as it can come off too aggresive. The flywheel is light and the gears are so short, it spins up really easily with just a touch.

I love my 182, despite the driving position and vague gearbox. A friend of mine has an EP3 which he bought on my recommendation and it's great, but there's just so much more character in the Clio. Having owned loads of clios and loads of EP3’s I think if I had to have one of the two for the track it would have to be the EP3. The ep3 can match the clio in corner speed and have a greater acceleration / straight line speed. Also the aftermarket for the civic makes it a car that can be tuned specifically to your needs. The clios are great fun and capture the old skool feeling of a light hot hatch whilst giving a few of the modern things like PAS, Electric windows ABS and air con in the non cup models (although some cups came with air con) I’m in the process of finding a 172 cup to keep along with my ep3 as I think they’re both the best hot hatches of their generation.

I’ve heard the gearbox is not fantastically strong and the throw is long. I’ve got a short shifter on it which is really easy to fit and sorts it out a treat. I’m always super careful when using those seat pulls too! It sounded similar with the engine note that it became "cammy" around midrange, almost as though it has vtec, but has too low of a rev limiter while it sounds like it's still building power, but of course it would likely turn to shrapnel if shook harder. Out the box, suspension, chassis etc is mega. But the engines and boxes in these are just not it. Had 5 of them in the past, each had dodgy gearboxes and dropped a valve in one of them lol.

Mine had 5 engines, one of which I changed myself and then I completely lost faith in it 😂

Recently I was wondering how some cars mnage to brake so good, is it just combination of rubber + brake disk, calliper, pads or does it have to do with the pump and booster(maybe lines)?
