Listeners to this channel know that we have been trying to achieve a high quality restoration of this historic recording for years. Basically, we have never been satisfied with any of them. The earlier the recording, the bigger the challenge, which translates into more fun for restorers. Up until now all versions offered here have been "placeholders"; not fully restored, but at least a representation of the original acoustics.
In recent months the method and technology available has brought us into a range where serious restoration effort of recordings from the mid-1920s is possible.
For the present effort full, comparative restorations of both the 1999 EMI issue, and the 2005 Naxos issues, which were taken from the same source but with a different rollover characteristic, were created.
While neither version actually achieved correct equalization initially, it was possible to determine that the EMI edition yielded better acoustic velocities than the Naxos version once the correct rollover was applied. This is understandable since there was no rollover standard in 1926 and prior to 2023 there was no adequate formula for determining it.
The technology of 1926 simply does not lend itself to noiseless reproduction, and we were left with choice of filtering or preserving harmonics.
There is no point in restoring an Elgar recording if it is not true to the original sound, hiss and all.
What emerges is a wonderful early electrical recording of Elgar conducting his masterpiece.
In all versions "Dorabella" through "Romanza" are in badly deteriorated condition, requiring additional noise reduction to accommodate MPEG encoding as conservatively as possible.
Elgar's second recording of his masterpiece is the farthest we can get from "cut and dry". He sought to give the music, in his own words, an "elastic and mystical quality". The present recording was made just two days after he gave a memorable concert performance of it with the London Symphony.
First performed in 1899 by Hans Richter, the work elevated Elgar to international acclaim. His reputation as one of the world's foremost conductors made this an extremely popular recording in the early 20th Century. Elgar was the biggest artist on the label at the time.
This recording comes from the earliest period of electrical recording, and it is fun to listen to the early approach that was taken here. They probably put a microphone with a figure-8 pattern in front of the orchestra and let them play. Even this early in the technology the Gramophone Company obtained a coherent sonic image.
Digital Transfer (1999): EMI, UK

Can't believe this is from 1926. The whole piece feels 'alive' under the direction of the composer.

Sounds warmer and smoother than the April restoration, at least to my old ears. Much more pleasing. Thanks!
