RS6 Oil Change (Why does my RS6 Oil smell like Fuel?)

In this video we will be hanging out 'In Dads Garage' while we do a quick DIY oil change on the RS6 and try to work out why the oil smells like fuel!

From what I've read, the smell of gasoline in the oil in GDI engines is normal, especially in cars that travel short distances due to the engine not reaching the ideal temperature, and also because the injector injects gasoline directly from the combustion chamber, which always leaves put some fuel into the crankcase, if the oil level doesn't rise, then there won't be much to worry about, what you should do is change the oil and filter more regularly, like every 6 months, I do this on mine Toyota GDI, because I also smell like gasoline in the oil, but I drive my car a lot of short distances every day, but the oil level is always normal

Hey thanks for the comment and recommendation. A few people have suggested sending an oil sample off for analysis to confirm if it is actually a problem or just driving style. I might do this in a future video, I'll be interested to see the results as I haven't experienced any rise in oil levels.

Just do an oil analysis, bedt way forward . My 3.0 tfsi smells like fuel too, BUT 0% fuel contamination was found on analysis, fully synthetic oil CAN smell like petrol, especially when its hot

Interesting how much oil difference there is. In my 2014 Left hand drive RS6 i need 9.3 liters of oil with filter change or 9 liters with no filter change. Car has 170k km and HPFP are still fine. My oil has a bit of gas smell but after analysis they did not find gas in the oil and my mechanic says that is normal to have a faint smell of gas for such a performance car. I always use the recomended oil from Audi and only put 100 octane gas in it.

Hi thanks for your comment. I am going to follow your lead and also get an oil analysis test next. After changing both the HPFPs and PCV unit I am coming to the conclusion that it probably is just normal as more and more people are asking the same question. Thanks again for watching :)

It depends where u live ! In Sweden the temperature are really cold under -10 degrees C for more than 7 months. So we use 5W30

@@SRR-td2eh im Swedish 🇸🇪 no not really it depends where in Sweden you are living. Like right know it’s 7*C where I live 😀 but I have my car stored in the garage over the cold winter months. I switched to 5-40 and the car runs much better

@@firfox8612 I agree with you. But in general we use mostly 0w30 and 5w30. I live in Norrbotten were the temperature drops down under -30 and mostly -10 for almost 7 months. Where u live in Sweden we consider it summer here up north 🤣 In the south is totally different weather than north. Also a heated garage is nice to have, I would also switch to 5w40 if I lived in a warmer weather.

Loving the oil debate guys, great to see cross sharing of information in the comments. I'm currently using 5w-30 here in the UK as recommended by a well know RS6 tuner who said stick with that unless i'm experiencing a lot of oil being burnt, then switch to 5w-40. At the moment I have been changing the oil too regularly to notice any losses through burning lol.

@@InDadsGarage 5w30 is a thinner oil and I’m sure u know, I haven’t noticed any oil consumption using 5w30 and as I said they only reason I used it because I live in the north of Sweden and the temperatures reaches sometimes -30 degrees and average-10, and I use the car all year around ☺️ I’m sure 5w40 is a great oil also, but wouldn’t protect your engine in extreme cold weather as 5w30. And by the way I changed today the HPFP from Audi they costed 2200$ 🤦🏽 I changed the oil also and the smell is almost gone.

It’s either over fueling (running rich) or piston rings starting to fail.

i have the same issue on mine, what band of fuel pumps did you get? i got quoted at Audi for 800euro per pump + labor

Hi, I bought Hitachi Fuel pumps, same make and part number as the Audi ones but just not stamped with Audi logo. I bought might from AUTODOC for around £250 each.

@@InDadsGarage I have the same issue, the car runs great. I did engine oil change and I flushed the engine 2 times. After driving it for a while I opened the oil cap and the smell was stinky and fresh of gasoline. So I’m gonna do like you, pressure test, injectors test, and HPFP test. I did change the pcv oil separator so that’s fine. I hope u will find the problem bro
