Those Ahmad Jamal Penthouse dates were recorded/co-produced by the recently retired Jim Wilke, legendary host of Jazz Northwest on KPLU/KNKX-FM. He professionally recorded a LOT of great stuff live (including recent reissues by the likes of Wes Montgomery and Coltrane). Sometimes the sets were also broadcast live, but his recordings were studio-quality. Downbeat named one of those Jamal Penthouse albums "Best Historical Recording" in 2023. PS: I first learned about Philip Catherine in the mid-'70s when he made a record ("Young Django") with Stephane Grappelli. They made several after that -- and Catherine (who also recorded a lot with Jean-Luc Ponty) is still with us!

As long as the source for this release is Pre-FM. I'm assuming it is, but just because it was wonderfully recorded to be broadcasted, doesn't mean they have the original source. If it's compressed like a lot of live broadcast recordings, then it's not going to sound great.

@@asufluffhead From the Downbeat review of the first two volumes: "The sound is excellent considering the live environment, thanks to Wilke’s quality source material and Feldman and company’s keen ability to refine and enhance tapes rescued from the vaults of jazz history."

I found Philip Catherine through another late Chet Baker, Strollin' (86). The disc just kept growing on me after at first thinking it was to straight. Another great Philip Catherine is his duets with Larry Coryell.

Don’t hesitate to give your wallets a break this week or even this season But if you do have to send money please do it locally at small business/Mom & Pops and not at the corporate monopolies I’m doing the former but still…. Peace and happy holidays ☺️

In the late 70s Chet Baker recorded 4 dates for Steeplechase with Doug Raney on guitar and NHOP on bass. The Crisscross date is nice, but those four are even better, ATMO. Especially "This Is Always".

Thanks for the samples! I was honestly thinking of sitting this one out but I wasn’t aware of the John Lee Hooker release. I have had it CD for a while and would love to get the vinyl reissue. Loved the Chet, Cal, and Wes samples. You have me tempted to go out in the crowd on Friday.

Huge fan of Cal Tjader here. I'm doing less buying and more listening but still enjoy watching these previews and reviews etc. Great video! Thanks.

Criss Cross is a great label. I used to collect their CD's from the mid 80's through the late 90's.wish I had the resources to start a vinyl collection of their catalogue

Thanks Mazzy. I'll probably get all of them 🙂 (all the jazz-records for sure). Good to hear that the Bill Evans sounds great. The actual material stems from a teenagers private recording of a radio broadcast from the Danmarks Radio (The Danish National Radio/TV company). I'll give a little more info of this in a video when I get my copy of the record.

Nice samples. I agree with your take on Wes and also like his later recordings, but they were on A&M not CTI. I met Philip Catherine at the Brussels Airport around 1988, had a nice chat and he even gave me his phone number. I saw John Lee Hooker perform in my hometown around 1973 or 74 and got the DVD of it. At the end the MC (around 19 years old) says on the microphone something like "Can you believe it, he's 50 years old!!" And now we have 80 year olds still putting out great music. I met Rob the Waxed on Sunday. Your videos are great.

Those Wes albums were produced by Creed Taylor and on his CTI label that for several years, were distributed by A&M and so they had both logos on the covers.

I love what Zev has done with uncovering really great "lost" recordings. What I don't like is the limited pressings for record store day releases. I have been shut out of vinyl releases as I live in a small town with only one record store, which unfortunately gets a very small sampling of the releases. When I see a limited edition being resold on eBay for 5 times its sale price, I get extremely angry. The resellers make more profit than Zev and the label. Why limit the pressing?

Is that Cal Tjader a pre-FM source? Radio broadcasts are usually really poor sound quality, b/c FM stations broadcasted in lossy compression.
@mazzysmusic11 ай бұрын
I don’t know if it was recorded at the club or via the radio station . My guess its at the Penthouse
