Man, that last one was absolute madness! Stifling bureaucracy, no accessible USB ports for emergencies, an idiot in security, an overzealous employee, and a guilty-until-proven-innocent policy regarding suspect USB devices! @Marco_Onyxheart2 жыл бұрын
I work at a college as a researcher. I'm no stranger to stifling bureaucracy and bad IT. I work in the mechatronics department, so lots of industrial automation and robotics. It's an industry where Windows basically doesn't exist. However, we are supposed to get our computers from IT, which insists on giving all departments "secured" laptops that only run Windows 10 and don't support any other Windows or Linux. The software that is used in our industry is often Linux-only and some of it will refuse to work in a virtual machine, especially software that requires a GPU. So sometimes, we buy our own computers from our very limited budget instead of the ones IT provides for free. But if IT ever discovers it, they will shut it down and cause us to go bankrupt. We simply won't be able to work at that point.

Heck, one time I had just gotten back from across the hallway to help my colleague again and made a comment that I love being an unpaid IT guy. Then I couldn’t figure out why my board’s speakers weren’t working, got annoyed at the board, was about to file a ticket, and then one of my kids was like “umm, you know a plug fell out, IT guy?” I gave them a death glare, rolled my eyes at them (all sarcastically), and told them to get out of the classroom. Similar, but completely different. I needed to get ahold of my father to tell him he left his cell phone at the house. My grandma suggests, as you can probably guess, that we try calling him... on his cell phone. I explain why that won't work until I believe she understands, then start looking through dad's phone for the office number to tell someone to tell him. Then grandma calls. It backs out of the contact list, or whatever, the main point is that it interrupts me. After two rings that I know she can hear, I pick it up, while looking straight at her and say "Hello." Since I'm standing so close to her, my voice echoes as her phone also picks up my voice. She laughs and says "Oh," finally understanding. . . or so I thought. I call work and he's there, or something; this part isn't important. Now I hand hung up, immediately after she said "Oh," and it was 2-5 minutes later now. _She still had the phone up to her ear,_ 'talking to her son' or something. I suspect a job that high security pays very well, both because their recruitment Pool is limited by need for background checks, and because they do not want disgruntled easily bribed employees. As for the policy, it actually seems sound to me if the security is important enough. The fatal flaw in any security is the human element, needing to take apart the computer to put a usb drive in is a step that would stop a lot of hacks, being careful that the drives are what they say they are and have no malware is good security. Very strong security is going to be a pain in the rear, because the things that let the right people in, tend to be routes that let the wrong people in, and humans tend to mess up security measures. So something that very clear, with everything double checked in ways that take enough effort that you cannot do mindlessly, and clear trackage of everything, and is not practical to bypass if you feel like being a slacker is how you do security. In most cases this is more trouble than it worth, but if it really matters, the trick to making things nigh impossible for crook, often involves making it very hard for the right person.

Whenever we discuss security at work I always try to balance user impact against actual worth of potential policies. There have been plenty of instances over the years that raising the hurdle for security impacts is so minor that it is not worth the headache it would bring to users. On top of that, I try to remind folks that social engineering and little shortcuts people will pick up to avoid annoying security are larger risks than what some new policies might resolve resulting in a net loss of security. Some days, I win those arguments and others we make the user experience worse for no real gain.

In my 9th grade class at a school for TECH jobs, we plugged in the dongle of a wireless mouse at the teacher pc. Someone in one of the back rows got to control the cursor while the teacher watched. He was convinced the system was infected with a virus - and simply observed while we turned it off. Twice. Then he went to get another teacher and, while he stepped out of the classroom, I unplugged the dongle. We never got into trouble, but it's been more than a decade since and I've yet to forget his confusion.

"while standing on it"? That's one of the worst analogies I've ever heard... Smash Guy, certainly didn't knew what he was doing or why, but simply following orders. Last story reminds me of my workplace. IT insists that all we need is Windows and if we want Linux we can use a VM. Linux can't be installed on the laptops that IT provides. Our department works in industrial automation, where Windows basically doesn't exist, a lot of software is Linux-only, and some of it refuses to work in a VM. IT basically doesn't want us to do our damn jobs.

Wow, my dad prohibited us children, who were less than 10 years old to climb on our wheeled chairs after he saw us doing it once to reach something. I learned as a 10 year old, what Karen did as an adult! I don't know, if the kid solution of standing with 1 foot on the (sturdy wooden not IKEA quality) bedpost and the other foot on the desk was safer or not, but we didn't stand on the chair again and my parents never saw me do it. So... But I was trained for an office job and the teacher trained us on safety. I learned, that Germany has regulations for wheeled chairs... (I love how crazy we are about regulations sometimes.) And we learned in vocation school to NEVER stand on our chairs and always use a correctly placed ladder, that was according to safety regulations. We didn't dwell on it for long, because we all had basic intelligence. We did spend a lot of time on learning how to sit correctly and the correct adjustments to avoid longterm injuries. An office just isn't that dangerous, when you follow basic common sense and safety rules. And if we learned young, we wouldn't have health problems later on in life as well as know our rights to get the equipment.

First story: Even my *78 year old grandma* wouldn't be stupid enough to do what that lady did. I'd do it, but not to do what that lady did, and I'd also be smart enough to have a chair without wheels on it, next to the chair with wheels, just to even my balance, because that way, I would be able to quickly move my foot over to the stable chair as soon as I feel the wheeled chair move. I've walked in heeled boots on ice and not slipped, and the boots weren't even made for ice walking, lol, they were winter boots, but not made specifically for ice

I work for a College as tech support, and have a few stories myself. I make sure that I keep my tech words to small things, that the user(s) should understand: I do not remember what the User was having problems with their Windows computer (troubleshooting over the phone): Me-Can you open the folder program for me? User-Folder program? Me-Yes, at the bottom of the screen you will see a folder icon. User-I don't see a folder icon. Me-It is on the task bar at the bottom of the screen. User-I don't see it. 10 minutes later (trying multiple ways to have the User find the folder icon and thinking of other options to work on the issue...) User-OH! I found the folder icon Co-worker story with the User on a Windows computer (troubleshooting over the phone): User-My camera is not working. Co-worker-Do you see the red dot at the top of the screen? User-No, I do not see a red dot at the top of the screen! Minutes later... User-Oh, I see a red dot! Co-worker-There is a little switch near by. Move the switch to the other side. User-My camera is working! Thank you! This happened with several Users: User puts in a ticket for their camera not working. User comes by our office. I push the little switch over while the User is watching and explain to the user that there is a built in camera cover. After all of this, when I setup a User, I show them the nice little feature added to their computer and how it works. Another camera cover story: I go to help the user with a problem that they are having. I notice that this is one of the computers with the feature of the camera cover, and notice the User has taped a piece of paper over the camera. After seeing this I kindly let them know about the camera feature when I am waiting for the computer to do a process of fixing the Users problem(s). This happens to my co-workers as well, and to more than one user: Me-I send out an email to a User asking multiple questions to get additional information to help the User resolve their issue. User-Responds to my email. More often then not they answer just one of those questions. The question they most often answer is one that could have been answered by the more important question that I asked them. Me-Copy and paste question again (only thing in the email) User-Will either answer the question or give information that is not what I asked them for. Me-If I do not have all of the information that I need, I will either keep going down my list of questions. >Because of this I have gotten to the point of now saying: "This is a College. We don't read." With Covid and people going home to work our users have forgotten that we have a ticket system with a process of how to create these tickets. And now the Users constantly keep contacting me directly/first. We have this system to ensure that the Users get the computer help that they need. I have now gotten to the point I will tell my users to put in a ticket with our Ticket Creating Group. Some of the reasons why I do this: One of my co-worker unexpectedly could not come in to work for 3 months. Any of the Users that sent this co-worker emails and phone calls had to wait longer to get the help that they needed. If these Users did what they should had done in the first place they would not have had to wait for days before getting that help. Another reason is some of the questions the Users request help with is not something I can help them with but another group of our IT group. Co-worker from another IT group: Me-(Went to see them about another issue original) I notice your Laptop's trackpad is starting to come up. This is probably do to the battery bulging. I will need to take it out, and we will need to get a replacement battery. But with the battery damaging your trackpad, I will need to take it out. Co-worker-Okay. Me, I get the tools out and pull the battery out, right in front of Co-worker. Co-worker, Tries turning on the Laptop to test to see if the other issue that they came for was fixed. Me-The Laptop needs to be plugging in. (Plugs in Laptop) Co-worker, Boots the Laptop and signs in and sees the issue is resolved. Thanks me, and start acting like they will be going back to their office with their Laptop. Me-You will need to turn off your computer first. Co-worker-I do? Me-Yes, you will have to do that until the new battery can be put in. Co-worker-I have to do this every time? Me-Yes, I did just take out the battery. Days later, I put in the new battery A year or two ago, a User comes in for a new Laptop bringing their old Laptop with them. My Co-worker called them in, to help with this changing of laptops, and I just happened to be in the office at that time as well. This User had duck taped part of the bottom of the Laptop on because part of the bottom of the Laptop would "not stay on", but the User could have called our Ticket System Group to have this looked at way before this point. We informed the User that it was due to the battery expanding in the Laptop and if this happens with the new Laptop, that they should call our Ticket System Group.

The mouse/eraser story reminded me of an English teacher in high school back in the 70's.. He had what would today would probably be called OCD He had to use chalk the same color as the shirt he happened to be wearing that day. Some students noticed this and it became a regular thing to try to see his shirt color before classes began for the day & rush to the class and hide that color of chalk. He'd get more and more frustrated as he searched for the right chalk. After a couple weeks of this, and his not being able to use the right color several days, he started keeping a box of chalk in his briefcase.
